President’s ReportBy Andy CoffmAn, President

The center of gravity for urban living is never far from Inman Park. For many reasons, our connection to Old Fourth Ward is more important now than ever. From business development, to quality of life, and to improving our educational opportunities, the O4W is part of our past and our future.

One cannot overstate the significance of the retail and housing developments sprouting up on the west side of Inman Park. Our larger neighbor is becoming an important destination for new urban pioneers and trendy businesses. Growth like this spurs many positive changes.

The most significant factor in the renaissance coming to our border is The BeltLine and the investment it represents. It is better than anyone imagined. It brings visitors who would seldom venture to this part of town because south of Ponce was --until now-- far, far away. It’s a people-watcher’s paradise. Whereas the train tracks served to separate our neighborhoods, The BeltLine is bringing us together in many ways.

The City has been a part of these positive changes. Councilmember, Kwanza Hall, declared 2012 as the “Year of Boulevard,” making the main thoroughfare through O4W a focus of much needed community activism and law enforcement cooperation. There are residual benefits to a stronger and more vibrant link among all of the in-town neighborhoods.

The commercial development on opposite sides of The BeltLine is bringing life to many previously unnoticed warehouses and loading docks. It improves security for us all by increasing foot traffic, lighting, and access. This commercial development will translate into increased population by people and families longing for an in-town experience that offers it all, without an hour-long commute.

In the most recent reconfiguration of the attendance zones for Atlanta Public Schools, the O4W was included in our school cluster, the Grady Cluster. One of the potential sites to increase capacity and ease student overcrowding is the David T. Howard School,

located in the heart of the O4W Neighborhood. This potential renovation would produce immediate positive changes to surrounding properties and infrastructure.

As the full potential of the residential and commercial development in the O4W is realized, our quality of life will be equally improved. It will be improved through greater choices, more destinations, and direct pedestrian and bicycle transportation routes to downtown and midtown.

For all of these reasons, our connection to O4W will soon be as strong and as important as our alliances with other in-town neighbors, like Candler Park, Virginia-Highlands and Poncey-Highlands. Over the next few years, we can expect our communities to become even more intertwined, especially as the former industrial sites along the old rail corridor are eliminated and repurposed. The benefits to Inman Park of a strong and secure O4W are obvious.

This spring will be like no other in Inman Park. A year ago, we did not have the new Springvale Park Playground to amuse our smallest residents. We also didn’t have the finished BeltLine, which now entertains bikers, skaters, walkers and runners. We’re an active bunch, no doubt. Just watch Inman Parkers go into high gear this month for Festival. Yards are cleaned, houses are prepped for Tour of Homes and Festival posters are going up. Minutes of the February IPNA Meeting

NewcomersDavid Chandley from Inman LaneRebecca and Morgan from Inman MotorworksJordy from The Icebox

AnnouncementsOreon Mann, book club will be February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Cathy Jamison, 805-B Edgewood Avenue. The book is Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin. Please bring a covered dish to share.

Pat Westrick, porch party is February 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Melissa Miller and Thom Abelew, 211 Hurt Street. Please bring a dish to share and your favorite beverage.

Paul Cornwell from Atlanta Camp (Coalition for the Abolition of Marijuana Prohibition) updated the neighborhood on Festival. They will be filing a lawsuit in federal court for active use of the park at Poplar Circle. He is requesting neighborhood support. Please contact him if you would like any more information, [email protected] or 404-462-7959.

Melissa Miller reminded everyone that the the 2013 Inman Park Festival is coming up in April. Please ask friends, family, etc coming to the Festival from other areas to walk, bike or take MARTA because parking will be a challenge. The Advocator will contain a map and list of road closings. There is an IPNA Festival Volunteer Meeting on March 14 at 7:30 p.m., 211 Hurt Street. Please go online to sign up to volunteer.

Leslie Grant from Grant Park announced she is running for the Atlanta Public School Board to represent this district. She has met with some members of the IP education committee.

Cathy Bradshaw announced the Inman Park Theater Night is Saturday April 27 at 7:30 p.m. under the tent on Elizabeth Street. Tables are still available for purchase and support the theaters in Inman Park. Please visit inmanparktheatrenight.com for more information.

Police Officers’ ReportLt. Schierbaum noted that the neighborhood has been quiet, but please stay aware and report anything suspicious. Please do not hesitate to call 911- that’s what it is there for. Once the police have been called, also call Inman Park Security Patrol.

Officer Bandy will have to have another surgery so will be on desk duty for a few more months, but please continue to send well wishes.

The robbery on Monday in L5P was unique because of timing and it was brazen. If you take cash to the bank regularly please change the time and days you do so around and do not do it alone.

There has been a problem with catalytic convertors from Honda CRV’s being stolen. This is a city wide problem. If you see anyone hanging around a car, especially at night, please call 911.

Elected Officials’ ReportNan Orrock wanted to let everyone aware of three bills currently being discussed. Republicans are trying to redraw maps to give themselves more Fulton County votes in the Senate and House. This also changes the county commission district which leaves unbalances to the county.

House Bill 170 changes homestead exemption, which sounds good but kills the Fulton County budget. All money for arts and other services will be gone.

There’s also a bill to do away civil service due process/pension after 2014. Nan urges people to ask legislature to stop this or we will not be able to recruit or keep our civil servants.

Jay Tribby for Kwanza Hall sends his congratulations on the completion of the Springvale Park Playground. It is a very nice playground.

Kwanza is looking into updating the special event permits that deal with marathons (and other road races) and festivals in Inman Park for road closures.

There is still discussion on the new stadium plans and will update when available.

Edgewood Avenue Bridge closing is still on for March. Please plan accordingly as it will impact traffic flow on that side of Inman Park.

IPNA Officers’ ReportAndy Coffman, PresidentIPNA is now accepting nominations for board members. Please email [email protected] to nominate yourself or someone else. The nomination committee is comprised of Dennis Mobley, Matt Nelson and Megan Holder.

Alan Travis, V.P. Zoning & Erin Kane, V.P. Historic Preservation135 Krog Street (The Icebox)- Special Exception for Parking; Variance to reduce transitional yard; Type III. Icebox is expanding the building to set up a print shop which will include parking. Need special parking exception because they will never need the required number of parking spaces. Immediate neighbors voted to support 6-0. A motion was made to support, seconded and carried.

Neel Gupta, V.P. PlanningTraffic update- information from meetings is on the IPNA website. Please check it out.

Moreland Avenue corridor study is happening and an off lane is being considered in L5P. More information to come.

By eric golDBerg • [email protected] Park Playground

Through several neighborhood fundraisers, a $47,000 grant from Park Pride, a gift from the City of Atlanta, the IPNA and generous contributions from Inman Park residents, we’ve raised $111,000 to date in completing phase one of Springvale Park improvements, a one of a kind playground.

Helping us reach our goal were 20 Inman Park families, five local businesses, the City of Atlanta and two non-profits (Park Pride and the IPNA). Each family and/or business donated at least $1,000 to become members of the Caterpillar Club, a group of Inman Park residents and businesses who believe in the vision of the playground, the larger park improvements on the way, and the group committed to building it. The Caterpillar Club members are: The Wrecking Bar Brewpub, The King-Keith House, Willy’s Mexicana Grill, Bobbi and Andre de Winter (Euclid Avenue), Jane and Bradley Smith (Sinclair Avenue), Regina Brewer and Joe Castellano (Sinclair Avenue), Amy Higgins and Mike Simpson (Inman Mews Drive), Cathy and Bo Bradshaw (Hurt Street), Ann and Jeff Cramer (Austin Avenue), Katie and Eric Goldberg (Sinclair Avenue), Leigh and Justin Wilde (Waverly Way), Michelle Nunn and Ron Martin (Elizabeth Avenue), Megan and Dan Kurzius (Sinclair Avenue), Lindsay and Phil Hill (Elizabeth Avenue), Aimee and Nick Franz (Waverly Way), Julie Noble and Eric Anderson (Alta Avenue), Stephanie and Cam McCaa (Waverly Way), Patty and Mike Murphy (Inman Mews Drive), Chris and Kristina Murphy (Dixie Avenue), Alyssa and Joel Beck (Battery Place), Alison and Michael Doerfler (Lake Avenue), Rebecca and Randy Hartley (Austin Avenue), Heather and Merritt Lancaster (Waverly Way), The Intown Dental Center at Edgewood Retail, Small Carpenters at Large, The IPNA, City of Atlanta, and Park Pride.

It’s not too late to become members of the Caterpillar Club. We plan on using the momentum and excitement generated from the building of the new playground to enter into a new phase of Springvale Park rehabilitation, which we hope to complete by the spring of 2014. The park could benefit from new walkways to replace the existing crumbling ones, hardscaping in and around the pond and playground, and a second, smaller playground build phase which would increase the existing playground’s footprint. Furthermore, connecting the north and south ends of the park is a longer term goal. All of the above projects hinge on us successfully executing the playground build, which has happened.

We ask for your support as we enter this exciting chapter in breathing life into our sleepy neighborhood centerpiece, Springvale Park. We appreciate all the donations we’ve received and are extraordinarily grateful for however much folks are willing to contribute.

Make your donation one of the following ways:

1) Write your $1,000 check made payable to Friends of Inman Park with “Springvale Park Playground” in the memo line and mail to:

Eric Goldberg385 Sinclair Ave.Atlanta, GA 30307

2) Go to the Springvale Park Playground website, www.springvaleparkplayground.org, follow the prompts and pay via Paypal.

Your donation is tax deductible as Friends of Inman Park is a 501 (c)3. You’ll receive a tax receipt from the Springvale Park Playground Committee. The Springvale Park Playground Committee (Eric Goldberg, Amy Higgins, Jane Smith, Patty Murphy, Kristina Murphy and Katherine Standish) thanks you for your continued support!

Gnomes Gnever Give Up–They Gneed Your Help!

Festival is Only a Month Away!

Mary Lin Student wins District Spelling Bee

Please join the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons at the Inman Park Festival Parade on Sat., April 27th for their annual attempt at the Gnome March World Record.

The Gnomes began marching in the Festival Parade in 2007 to bring attention to important Gnome issues: gnomophobia, dandelion genocide, legalizing weeds, etc. In 2010, the Krewe and the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club attempted a World Record of the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Garden Gnomes (a/k/a Gnome March). Signatures of 108 Gnomes were earnestly verified by Julia Stedman and Amy Carter. The Guinness Book of World Records denied the Gnomes’ claim, stating that the Gnome March was not an “established competition.” They then turned around and awarded it to a Canadian effort affiliated with the film, “Gnomio and Juliet!” First war birds, then this--curses! The Krewe’s Gnome March did give the Canadians a run for their money in 2011 with 239 Gnomes but fell 40 Gnomes short. Now, the confounded Brits hold the record with 478 Gnomes. Is the Krewe giving up? Never! They’re not taking this gnominally!

So do your Gnamerican duty--bring two friends and help break the World Record! All you need is a pointy red hat, gardening clothes and a sign promoting/protesting your pet Gnome issue. The Parade is Sat., April 27. Line up at 1 pm at Edgewood and Waddell. Step off at 2 pm, then immediately after the Parade, all Gnomes gather at Freedom Park between Euclid and Austin Ave. for the requisite World Record-clinching group photo. Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall will be the sanctioned Gnome Offiant.

Look for details on a hat-making party at the Yacht Club and at www.gratefulgluttons.com and http://www.facebook.com/KreweOfTheGratefulGluttons. For general Parade details, check out inmanparkfestival.org/events/parade.

While there is still much to do, the planning phase of the 42nd Inman Park Festival and Tour of Homes is coming to a close. Festival this year will be April 26th-29th, and are we

excited about all we have to offer! We have a wonderful tour of homes, musicians, artists, food vendors, beer, and, of course, a fun and always funky parade on Saturday the 27th. Home Tour tickets should be available at the March IPNA meeting

Remember--our Festival is planned and run entirely by volunteers--and we need your help! We call on all of our neighbors and friends to help us make this Festival the best yet. There are volunteer slots available in house sitting, beer pouring, trash duty, final clean up and many more. This is a great opportunity to get involved, spend time with your neighbors, and show our visitors what makes our neighborhood so great. Despite the work involved, it is always a fun and fulfilling experience, and there is FREE BEER for volunteers! Please visit our volunteer website at www.inmanparkfestival.org/volunteer, sign up for a few shifts, and do your part to make this year’s Festival happen.

See you at the Festival!!

On February 7, the Atlanta Public Schools District Spelling Bee was hosted at Gideons Elementary School. Contestants from 25 elementary schools competed for the top spot. The APS Spelling Bee is sponsored annually by the Atlanta Association of Educators (AAE), with Ramon Reeves as President and Martha Henderson as the Spelling Bee Coordinator. Theo Weimar, from Mary Lin Elementary, will advance to the Georgia Association of Educator District Spelling Bee!

By alexanDra coFFMan • [email protected] de Belugas!

Inman Park’s own Beluga Swim Team is ready for its fifth swim and dive season. This unique, rowdy, and fun-loving group lives up to IPNA’s reputation among our intown neighbors.

It’s hard to believe that our Swim Team --“The Belugas”-- is five years old! Registration starts this month and you can download the registration form at www.inmanparkpool.com. Your child must be 6 years of age and able to swim the length of the pool to be on the team. Our coaches offer swim clinics (outside of practice) that are very popular.

Everyone is welcomed and we have kids from Mary Lin, SPARK, NCS, Fernbank, Inman Middle, Children’s School, Drew Charter, Paideia School, Grady, Woodward, and others. This is a truly collaborative team of many neighborhoods and schools. You do not have to be a member of the Inman Park Pool Association to participate.

Practice and conditioning starts Monday, May 13 starting at 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Starting Tuesday, May 28, practice begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends by 9:00 a.m. (we have two morning sessions). We will not have practice on Memorial Day or on the last day of school.

Meets will be June 6, 13 and 20 starting at 5 p.m. at the Inman Park Pool. The Inman Park Pool closes at 4:00 p.m. on those days to accommodate the swim meets. Thank you IPPA! Our team competes within our ranks and we have one practice meet against the Lake Claire Wahoo’s in May. With a team of 75 plus swimmers our meets have gotten quite competitive and fun!

Our end of season party will be on Saturday, June 22. Medals and ribbons will be awarded that morning. New this year: Meet the Team coffee on May 11 at the Inman Park Pool at 10-11 a.m. Mark your calendar and come for some coffee and reconnect with swim friends.

March Public Safety News/February Crime Report

Inman ParkSecurity PatrolFebruary 2013 Activity

Festival is only two months away which also means it is time to start thinking about renewing your commitment to the Inman Park Security Patrol (IPSP) and updating your membership in the Inman Park Neighborhood Association (IPNA). We are busily working to upgrade our new shopping cart on the website, which will include new features such as recurring payment/billing (no more wondering, am I paid up?), a password protected online membership directory and new streamlined online credit card payments. Hopefully by the time you are reading this, it will be already online and ready to go, but in the event it isn’t our current system is still in place. If you need any information regarding the IPSP, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or check out www.inmanpark.org. Remember that the IPSP cannot function without your generous support, so please remember to renew, continue the commitment of your home’s former resident if you are a new neighbor, or consider signing up if you are a long time resident who has not supported the Inman Park Security Patrol in the past. It’s never too late to make a difference!

Now last month’s crime:

NOTE: APD’s reporting system is running a few weeks behind so I have added recent incidents of note that are not yet on their website.

Auto Theft: None reported

Burglary: None reported

Robbery: On February 3, a convenience store was robbed at gunpoint by a lone black male on Moreland Avenue. Earlier on the same evening, a woman was carjacked while visiting the ATM on the Candler Park side of Moreland Avenue. On February 4, a 13 year old was robbed at knifepoint by three young males, one of whom the victim recognized as a classmate at his school.

Theft from Vehicle: Car break-ins were reported on Elizabeth Avenue, Dixie Avenue and North Highland Avenue. A catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle on Elizabeth Avenue. This trend continues to be a problem citywide, so if you own a Honda CRV or similar vehicle, please be aware and take precautions to guard against this type of theft.

If you are interested in more detailed reports concerning the dates and locations of criminal activity in Inman Park, the APD web site has a very easy to use crime mapping tool at http://www.atlantapd.org/zone6.aspx.

Until next month, be safe!

The Spirit of Inman Park: Spring Clean Up

ellie M. MorriS • [email protected]

Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody Clean Up!

Have you ever wondered how our beautiful neighborhood returns to its pre-Festival cleanliness once the festivities end? With the dedication and tireless efforts of a small group of folks, that’s how! And this year, we aim to complete those “final clean up” activities more quickly than ever! How will we do it, you ask? With YOUR help!

This year, when you go to the Festival volunteer website, you’ll see several opportunities to help out. First, we’ve divided the Festival footprint up into four areas – if you have a desire to clean up a particular part of the neighborhood, here’s your chance! You can choose from the Euclid Ave/Tent Area, Poplar Circle, Delta Park, or Edgewood. We’re also looking for “captains” for each area to help lead the team. The cleanliness of whatever area you choose will be your team’s mission. Please email me at [email protected] if you’re interested in being a cleanup captain. Or, if you have a ladder and a friend (a pick-up truck helps, too), we’d love your help taking down all the patriotic American flags from the telephone poles. We also need a couple trucks and a few riders/loaders to haul away the main tent stage, load up the tables and chairs from Poplar Circle and Delta Park and bring them back to the main tent, and take other miscellaneous items to the warehouse at Highland Bakery. And finally, we need a couple people to go around the neighborhood and pick up Festival signs and return them to the warehouse.

As I write all the tasks out, it seems like a lot, but we always get it done. This year, with your help, I know we can get it done even faster! Oh, and don’t let me forget the best part – for all of your efforts, there is a pizza and beer celebration at the end of the night! Yes, you heard me correctly – free pizza and free beer (with vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free choices--just email me)! So go ahead and head right on over to http://inmanparkfestival.org/volunteer-app/, click on Sunday April 28, choose your Festival CleanUp/Final CleanUp job, and make your neighborhood proud!

The six or so weeks leading up to Festival were a busy time for Inman Park residents in the late 70s and early 80s. Our main objective was to spiff up the neighborhood before all our visitors arrived on the last weekend in April.

Regular maintenance on most of our homes prior to our purchase of them had been – shall we say – somewhat spotty. Many of our houses had been divided up into apartments. And because of all those apartments, there were walls in inappropriate places, extra toilets, bug-infested refrigerators & gas stoves…well, you get the picture, and all that detritus needed to be disposed of – certainly before we could open our houses for tour!

I think it was the late Holly Mull who talked someone at the city into scheduling a special Inman Park trash pickup week. Residents were encouraged to drag all that stuff out to the street – plaster, sheetrock, sinks, toilets, stoves, rotted 2x4s, nasty plywood, random stuff that tenants had abandoned, roofing material, odd windows and doors – it was all in huge piles in front of the houses on streets all over the neighborhood. It must have been a great success, because it was a regular event by the time we moved to IP in 1975.

There were informal competitions to see who had the biggest pile or who had the cleverest diorama composed of the stuff on their pile. And of course, we all shopped each other’s trash piles, just in case someone else’s discarded window or door was just what we needed to finish a room renovation. All week long city dump trucks with claw-like arms could be seen driving up and down our streets, picking up the trash we had gleaned from our basements, attics and renovation projects. (An interesting observation: no matter how much trash was put out, there was always that much again the next year. It was as though our basements were manufacturing the stuff all by themselves. ) I think I remember that whoever organized Cleanup Weekend was designated the Trash King or Queen, and rode on the street sweeper in the parade that year.

On Cleanup Weekend, everyone worked all day Saturday toting discards to the street. Then we would gather in either Poplar Circle or Springvale Park for the Cleanup Picnic. It was potluck, of course, with beer and wine supplied by IPR (IPNA’s predecessor organization.) We were all dirty, scratched up and exhausted, but it was great to be together. We ate, talked and drank beer and the kids would slide down the Euclid Avenue hill into the park, laughing and giggling. (What on earth were we thinking?!)

And when Festival arrived, Inman Park would come shining through -- just like it does now, 40+ years later.

Butterfly Ball 2013

On Friday, April 26 from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, Butterfly Ball will kick-off our 42nd Festival, and all IPNA members are invited. The party is organized by the IPNA Festival Committee, and if your membership is current, you will receive a printed invitation. OOO-wee!

Priority is given to IPNA members; therefore, there is a timeline for ordering. Member ticket sales start on Monday, April 1 (no fooling!) and ticket sales for non-members start on April 15. Details will be posted on our website at www.inmanparkfestival.org/butterflyball. Attention procrastinators: tickets sold out in two weeks last year...just sayin’…

The easiest way to reserve tickets is to go to www.inmanparkfestival.org/butterflyball. If you prefer not to buy tickets online, there is a ticket request form in the March Advocator or a printable copy on the website.

Tickets MUST be pre-ordered and are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can reserve individual tickets, two (2) per individual member or maximum four (4) per member household. Remember – the Festival Committee decided not to offer tables this year in order to allow more residents an opportunity to attend.

Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie! Bogey and the Viceroy will be here to entertain us. You may know members of this band from Kingsized. They’ll be playing a wide variety of songs sure to get your groove on. There will be two (2) cash bars, complimentary non-alcoholic drinks, and a great complimentary buffet and desserts brought to you by Bold American Catering.

If you would like to help decorate the tent on Friday afternoon or clean up after the party on Saturday morning, email me at [email protected] or sign up at the Volunteer page on the website, http://inmanparkfestival.org/volunteer-app/.

So get your “festive” attire ready, and let’s celebrate Festival 2013! Festive attire would be sparkly, funky, dressy, “formal with flair,” or that cool, hip, trendy-kinda-sorta-formal-but-not outfit.

RE:NEW LIFE atInman Park Church

By Fran BurSt-terranella • [email protected]

Homegrown Hollywood In Inman Park

When my husband Tony and I bought our home on Alta Avenue in the summer of 1975, I was a fresh young filmmaker- shooting, directing and producing every type of film or TV project I could get involved in. In 2011, after many home renovations and restorations, along with more than 700 film and video productions, I embarked on a new adventure: producing and directing my first feature film “The 12 Lives of Sissy Carlyle.”

Sissy Carlyle, an unassuming young woman struggling with tragedies from the past, fantasizes in her secret journals about the far more exciting person she may one day become. I reached out to long-time Inman Park friends who generously helped us solve one of the hardest parts of making a movie, finding great locations for filming.

Cast, crewed and filmed entirely in metro Atlanta, “Sissy Carlyle” is what Hollywood affectionately calls a “micro budget film.” By using new digital filmmaking technologies and putting together a cast and crew who are eager to gain experience in feature-filmmaking, we’re part of the new wave of filmmakers making independent films for a small fraction of the cost of traditional Hollywood films.

A very big thank you goes out to Bill and Marnie McMurry, Karen and Ken Taber and JavaVino Coffee and Wine House, who graciously let us film in their homes and at JavaVino. Another heartfelt thank you goes to Bo Bradshaw for his excellent advice on good places to film, including the Inman Park Butterfly Wall, which makes a delightful cameo appearance in our film. And, thank you to my Inman Park friends who have let me share my movie-making tales at countless neighborhood events for 37 years!

Please visit us on Facebook to see our movie trailer and to check our progress as we finish the film. www.facebook.com/sissycarlylemovie.

Many of you may have heard about the “gun incident” at Grady High School recently. A girl brought a gun to school and accidentally shot herself in the leg. She walked to the nurse’s office and they called 911. An announcement came over the intercom saying that our school was on lockdown. We waited patiently and then we heard the news about the injured student. I never felt scared, because we knew the situation was under control and our principal Dr. Murray assured us over the intercom that we were safe. The Grady administration did a great job in keeping everyone calm and handled the situation without much commotion. It seemed that the outside reaction from media was greater than the reaction the students had on the inside. In the days following the incident, Grady amped up their security. We can tell that they are serious and really care about keeping violence out of the school. From my perspective, this was an isolated gun scare and the girl had no intention of bringing harm to Grady. If any of you are interested in following this story or any other news from Grady High, I urge you to follow updates from the student-run newspaper, The Southerner, by going to www.thesoutherneronline.com and liking our Facebook page. We are currently investigating why the girl brought the gun to school in the first place and whether there will be any long-term changes for Grady security.

Classes are held Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm; training includes classroom courses in crime scenes, a department overview and a zone ride-along. The next session begins April 17, 2013; application deadline is April 7th. Call 404.546.5650 for more information.

Our Police Mini Precinct Is Better Than Ever

Rise n’ Shine Organic Farm CSA Comes to Inman Park

There’s great news about our Community Police Mini-Precinct in Little 5 Points. Amazingly, we now have doubled the police assignment to patrol there, while lowering our costs to run the Mini-Precinct!

First, in addition to having Officer LaRosa (an aggressive officer with decades of familiarity with the L5P area) assigned during the daytime on weekdays, we now also have Officer Stellingburg assigned on evenings, including weekends (not to mention the added police presence provided by the other officers coming and going to this satellite police station, filing reports, taking breaks, etc.). Secondly, we have also moved the Mini-Precinct next door to a smaller space with lower rent and overhead.

But we need your help to keep it open. Thus this yearly appeal for individual donations.

Now beginning its 15th year of existence, the Atlanta Police Mini-Precinct in L5P is a cornerstone in our community’s approach to reduce crime. Since it opened, the increased presence and visibility of Atlanta Police Officers that the Mini-Precinct brings to our community has made a significant difference in the conduct of those hanging out in L5P and the surrounding community.

The Mini-Precinct is a public/private partnership between the City of Atlanta and community. The community provided the funds to renovate the space and continues to pay for rent, utilities and other operating costs—that funding comes from L5P Business Association and its members; grants from the Inman Park Neighborhood Association and the Candler Park Neighbor Neighborhood Organization; and contributions from individual households in the area. The officers, equipment, supplies, computers, electronic and video communication gear, etc., are funded by the Police Department.

Over the years for a variety of reasons (people move, financial situations change, complacency due to lower crime rates, etc.), the number of individual households contributing has dwindled some, we need to reverse this trend. Keeping the Mini-Precinct here requires funding. Send your personal contribution now (matching your last year’s contribution, or sending $50 or more, is suggested). It’s the right thing to do for your community, your neighbors and yourself. Send your check (include your name, address and phone number) to:

The Inman Park United Methodist Church and The Atlanta School are partnering with Rise n’ Shine Organic Farm to provide a new drop off location for their CSA program. Members of a CSA join early in the year and then receive a box of fresh, seasonal produce every week or every other week once the season starts in mid April. Every box gets 5 to 10 different fruits and veggies.

In addition to providing access to fresh, local, healthful food, The Atlanta School is also using this opportunity to get kids involved in the food cycle process. Our partnership will involve students visiting the farm in Calhoun, which will provide children with a rare opportunity to experience a first-look at where our food really comes from. Help the local food movement spread and make delicious, healthy, local food easily available to our Inman Park friends and neighbors.

For more information or to sign up for the Rise n’ Shine CSA, please visit their website at www.risenshineorganicfarm.com or contact Mitch Lawson directly at (706) 676-0825 or [email protected].
