From The Desk Of Karen Shoemaker, Executive Director

In July, The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties swore in our new Board members as well as current Board members beginning new terms. Seated are Paula Henry, Vice President, Wells Fargo and Sheri Leo

Vice President, Relationship Manager, Fulton Financial Advi-sors . Standing are John Andronis, Portfolio Manager, QNB Bank; Joe Carcione, Vice President, Easton/South Easton Branch Manager, Lafayette Ambassador Bank; Paul Eichman, CFP®, Principal, Financial Advisor, Oaktree Advisors; and George Lewis, Director of Research and Analysis, Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation. Missing from the photo is Maureen O’Meara, Business Development Director, HMK Insur-ance . The Arc is celebrating it’s 50th year as a chapter and it is through strong support, commitment and involvement by our Board that helped us reach this incredible milestone. Thank you all for supporting the mission of The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties and those we serve!

2017 has been quite a year! As we prepare to close out our 50th year as a chapter of The Arc, we are filled with many emotions. Our trips down memory lane bore witness to the lives that were changed through 50 years of advocating, pushing through when pushed back, and the vow to never give up until all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have a voice that is heard. There is a high level of enthusiasm as we launch into our 51st year with an unbridled determination to contin-ue the mission and vision of the devoted families and individuals who built this organi-zation. Buoyed by the dedication and hard work of a committed staff, steadfast Board and the support and participation of our community, we are excited to jump into the next 50 years, with a deep sense of honor for the trust you have placed within us.

It’s been a year of fantastic events and programs for The Arc. We began our 50th anniversary year cele-brating with our staff, Board and special guests at our Kick-Off event in January. Our 3rd annual Wings for All® (formerly Wings for Autism) event in May allowed The Arc to meet with local families at Lehigh Valley International Airport where they would have the opportunity to have a real-time, dress rehearsal of a functioning airport with their families. It is an incredible event and it is such a joy to see it grow and im-pact more families each year. Our One Step Forward Celebration in May was an amazing evening, honor-ing achievements by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as those who have dedicated their services to them. The intertwining of our 50th Anniversary with the attendance of many dynamic past Board Presidents made the evening simply perfect. The Sprout Film Festival returned to the Lehigh Valley in June for the fourth year, giving us the opportuni-ty to view the human stories and quality music brought to the screen by individuals with IDD. The movies and videos are created by individuals determined to remove barriers and shatter the misinformation that is perpetuated regarding individuals with IDD. Our 33rd Annual Allen D. Deibler Golf Tournament was held in October and the spirit of a community that champions people with intellectual and developmental disa-bilities even brought us beautiful weather this year. Finally, The Arc Board of Directors welcomed 5 new members this year, each with unique and valuable contributions to offer our thriving organization. Our volunteer leadership reflects the growing stature The Arc has earned in the Lehigh Valley community and beyond, and it is humbling to watch this group of caring people continue to grow and support our mission as we move forward with the inspired work we do. It’s an exciting time at The Arc and for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities - thank you for being part of it.

Welcome New Board Members!

With the dedicated assistance of trained staff and volunteers, The Arc provides evening recreation ac-tivities for adults in the Lehigh Valley. This program offers support to families by providing opportuni-ties for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enjoy recreational activities with their peers. The ability to provide authentic opportunities to socialize with peers is something that is often overlooked when serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This pro-gram focuses on enriching activities that participants of the program select to ensure the program is truly reflecting the interests of those we serve.

Every Thursday night for a nominal fee of $8, The Arc offers a wide variety of in-house and community-based activities based on the participants’ choosing. From 7-9 PM , guests are treated to activi-ties which have included but are certainly not limited to: arts and crafts classes, Bingo Night, Talent Shows, dances, and movie night, just to name a few. The group celebrates the holidays with a Thanksgiving dinner and a holiday celebration at the end of the year. Trips to museums, parks, concerts, and outdoor activities are also among the many activities that the Evening Recreation provides.

Evening Recreation began as an opportunity to offer services for indi-viduals who live in group homes who may or may not participate in other programs at The Arc. The program has changed significantly throughout the thirty years of its existence. When it began, The Arc staff would travel to pick up individuals to participate in some pre-planned activities with a few other identified individuals, thirty plus people a week. Volunteer and individual, disability or without disabil-ity, young and old, all enjoying a unique experience together that al-low each person to expand their social network.

Through in-kind donations of craft items, equipment and gift cards, the Evening Recreation staff ensures that items are ready and available to correspond with the theme chosen for the even-ing. Participants have also been a part of assisting the organiza-tion events by working with our phenomenal Air Products volun-teers to create centerpieces for our tables at the One Step For-ward event held annually. The Evening Recreation staff also hold regular fundraisers, like Joe Corbi food sales, to increase the fund-ing to the program allowing them to participate in more experienc-es in the community Regular weekly activities provide a break for families allowing them freedom to run errands, schedule appointments or tend to other business for an evening each week. Families and individuals

are afforded the opportunity to review the quarterly schedule that is handed out and posted on our social media page to ensure that the evenings events are something they are interested in participating in. For more information on the program and if you would like to participate, please contact The Arc at 610-849-8076. Staff: Evening Recreation Director - Kirsten Tarboro Evening Recreation Asst. A Shared Vision

On August 17th, The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties along with Lehigh Valley Interna-tional Airport were recognized with “The Vision Award” presented to us by the YWCA of Bethle-hem at their 90th Annual Meeting. This is the first time this award has ever been presented. The Vision Award recognized the Wings for All® program that is a unique “dress rehearsal” for chil-dren and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience the possibility of travelling by air. The Arc has partnered with Lehigh Valley International Airport since the pro-gram’s inception in the Lehigh Valley 3 years ago. We congratulate the YWCA as they celebrate 90 years of working to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Thank you for this wonderful honor! Pictured below are award recipients Ka-ren Shoemaker of The Arc; Charles Everett, Jr. of Lehigh Valley International Airport; The Arc of PA’s Executive Director Maureen Cronin as well as a participating family from our Wings for All® event in May 2017.

Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week!

September brought us Direct Support Professionals Recognition week and we had the opportunity to celebrate and recognize the commitment and dedication of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs)and showing our appreciation for their essential contribution to The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties and the people we serve! The SPARC staff was treated to daily goodies and encour-agement by all members of the staff. Although our DSPs are in-credibly appreciated year round, it was fun and exciting to see the staff surprised each day with different ways in which to say “thank you.” Pictured are Maryann DeHaven and program participant Devon. Of her position, Maryann says, “Together, we build trust with each other. I teach my class a new thing every day and they teach me new things at the same time. Together, we are a team!” Thank you Direct Support Professionals for all of the wonderful work you do!

Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH MY!

September 23rd brought The Arc staff, board members and their families back to the Lehigh Val-ley Zoo for the annual summer picnic. The weather was a great deal more cooperative this year and it was a perfect day for a walk around the animal enclosures. Lunch was a delicious as-sortment of wraps, pierogis and crisp salads as well as tasty cookies for dessert! Board mem-bers and their families joined the staff and a great time was had by all!

Congratulations to Donna Haggerty! Donna was The Arc’s “Distinguished Honoree” at the 2017 National Philanthropy Day awards breakfast, presented by AFP. Donna was honored at the event, in front of an audience of nearly 400 community, business and government leaders, for her years of incredible service and contributions to The Arc. Donna has been a leading voice on The Arc’s Board and a prevalent volunteer with the One Step Forward annual celebration as a Co-chair and was heavily involved with the presentation of the fabulous auction prizes presented at the event each year. Donna and her husband will be spending their time enjoying their retirement and their new grandchild. Thank you Donna for all you do for The Arc!

The Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties was a grateful recipient of the Wells Fargo Community Connections Grant at their annual breakfast. Wells Fargo Community Connections Program is an annual program where each of its retail banking branches explores the needs of their local communities and selects a nonprofit organi-zation to receive a $1000 grant. Wells Fargo will award more than $300,000.00 in grants to nonprofit organizations and schools throughout Pennsylvania. "At Wells Fargo, we know that small acts can yield huge results and we are committed to supporting programs and organizations that we believe are important to the future of our communities' vitality and success," said Branch Manager Paula Henry. "So we are proud to support The Arc of Lehigh and Northamp-ton Counties with this grant." Thank you Wells Fargo!
