Half Our WorldI do so wish the men in my life took better care of themselves. Fathers, husbands, sons, uncles, neighbors – the male half of our human race often ignores the steps needed to insure wellness or reduce illness.
Men have unique health challenges. Certain maladies, such as color blindness and prostate cancer, only men can have. Others, like abdominal aortic aneurysms, are far more prevalent with men. And heart disease? Men are more likely to die of it than women.
We at Advocate Trinity Hospital recognize the importance of men’s health and are working to make it easier for men to take care of themselves. That is why this issue of Connections focuses on men’s health.
Also, for the third year, Trinity Hospital is holding its annual day for men. Please read this newsletter’s article about our plans for our Men’s Health Event on June 11. Then talk about this fun, free and informative event with the men in your family, your community and your congregation.

Connecting Faith and Health
Several years ago Chicagoans were shocked when the local news media reported that
Chicago’s then 57 year old Mayor Richard Daley had been rushed to the hospital
complaining of chest pains. It turned out that the Mayor was experiencing the effects of untreated hypertension and had not had a physical examination in more than ten years.
Mr. Daley’s ten-year hiatus is not as unusual as it seems. Men often ignore symptoms and resist seeking medical care until they are in crisis. A
recent report from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicates that men are
less likely to seek medical help as often as women and also are 80 percent less

Advocate Trinity Hospital Outpatient Programs and Services• Trinity Hospital offers a wide range of outpatient testing. • We pride ourselves on having outpatient programs which provide easy access for both physicians and patients. • Many of our programs, testing modalities and clinics offer same or next day appointments. • We even offer walk-in clinics on certain days. (For example, mammographies are available on a walk-in basis on
Thursdays.) All that is required when making an appointment is an order from your clinician and a pre-certification for certain tests or procedures. Valet parking is free for outpatient services.

Radiological Services
CT/Computed Tomography: 2 CT scanners, a 16 and a 64 slice scanner. We perform all procedures including CT guided biopsies and CT angiography. Men’s Health Quiz
Advocate Trinity Hospital, in partnership with WVON Radio, will host its annual Men's Health Event at Bessemer Park, 8920 South Muskegon Street in Chicago on Saturday, June 11th from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. This event helps to raise awareness about issues that affect men's health, including heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer and kidney disease.
Free screenings for kidney disease, prostate cancer and other health conditions will be available to all participants. The day’s activities will include an early morning Walk for Men’s Health at 8 a.m. (registration begins at 7 a.m.) and a Fit and Foul fitness challenge featuring WVON radio personalities and Trinity Hospital leaders. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals will present educational lectures and offer question and answer sessions on a variety of health related topics.

A man’s life expectancy is six years shorter than a woman’s, a gap that has only decreased by just one year in the last eighty years. Men are likely to drink and smoke more than women. This puts them at greater risk of premature death from major killers such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. There are also health conditions, such as prostate cancer, that only affect men.
Many of the major health risks that threaten men’s lives are preventable and can be effectively treated with early diagnosis. Screening tests can find diseases in their early stages, when they are easier to treat. It's important to have regular checkups and screenings. (See the listing of suggested screenings for men that follows this newsletter.)
June is Men’s Health Month. Encourage the men in your family, community and congregation to seek regular medical advise, screenings and early treatment for diseases that put them at risk.
