Taub has starred in her musical adaptations of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (Drama Desk nom) and As You Like It, commissioned for The Public’s groundbreaking Public Works initiative and produced in their Free Shakespeare in the Park season. She’s currently writing a musical about the American women’s suffrage movement and she’s writing lyrics for the upcoming The Devil Wears Prada, with music by Sir Elton John. Other credits include writing songs for and co-starring in Old Hats at the Signature Theatre and A.C.T., playing Mary (Lortel nom) in the off-Broadway run of Great Comet, and appearing in the original cast of Hadestown at New York Theatre Workshop. of Public Works at The Public Theater, an initiative that seeks to engage the people of New York by making them creators and not just spectators. Woolery adapted and directed a new musical adaptation of As You Like It with Shaina Taub, which debuted at the Delacorte Theater with 200 New Yorkers and was named one of The New York Times best shows of 2017. Woolery is the former Associate Artistic Director of Cornerstone Theater Company and Conservatory Director at South Coast Repertory, and is the founding member of The Sol Project in New York.
Timothy McCuen PiggeeDirector Directed A Raisin in the Sun at Seattle Rep in 2016. Other directing credits include productions and readings for Village Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Theater Schmeater, Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, and numerous productions at Cornish College of the Arts where he is currently a professor of Theatre. His acting credits include roles with several regional theaters, local stages, and on Broadway. Most recently, Timothy appeared as Oliver Warbucks in Annie at The 5th Avenue Theatre. His film and TV credits include Navy Diver, Outpatient, After, Crocodile Tears, Take One, “The David Letterman Show,” and the “65th Annual Tony Awards.” His awards and honors include the 2016 Gregory A. Falls Award for Sustained Achievement, the 2015 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship, the 2012 University of Utah Distinguished Alumnus Award, two Gregory Awards, Gypsy Rose Lee Award, Utah Holiday Award, and four Seattle Footlight Awards.

He recently composed additional music and arrangements/orchestrations for The Last World Octopus Wrestling Champion at ArtsWest as well as the original score for Romeo and Juliet at Wooden O. Steven is the playwright and performer of his autobiographical, actor-musician solo show The Sonata Years which was produced in an extended, sold-out run at 18th and Union and received a workshop with Seattle Rep’s The Other Season this past July.
Kathryn Van MeterChoreographerKathryn Van Meter is a Seattle-based director, choreographer, actress, and teaching artist. Recent collaborations include directing and choreographing Matilda for Village Theatre, choreographing Il trovatore for Seattle Opera, and originating the role of Liz in the critically acclaimed Fire Season at Seattle Public Theater. Kathryn is the resident choreographer for the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” and has taught dance all around the United States, South Africa, and the dacha lands of Siberia. Woolery adapted and directed a new musical adaptation of As You Like It with Shaina Taub, which debuted at the Delacorte Theater with 200 New Yorkers and was named one of The New York Times best shows of 2017. Woolery is the former Associate Artistic Director of Cornerstone Theater Company and Conservatory Director at South Coast Repertory, and is the founding member of The Sol Project in New York.
Timothy McCuen PiggeeDirector Directed A Raisin in the Sun at Seattle Rep in 2016. Other directing credits include productions and readings for Village Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Theater Schmeater, Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, and numerous productions at Cornish College of the Arts where he is currently a professor of Theatre. His acting credits include roles with several regional theaters, local stages, and on Broadway. Most recently, Timothy appeared as Oliver Warbucks in Annie at The 5th Avenue Theatre. His film and TV credits include Navy Diver, Outpatient, After, Crocodile Tears, Take One, “The David Letterman Show,” and the “65th Annual Tony Awards.” His awards and honors include the 2016 Gregory A. Falls Award for Sustained Achievement, the 2015 Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship, the 2012 University of Utah Distinguished Alumnus Award, two Gregory Awards, Gypsy Rose Lee Award, Utah Holiday Award, and four Seattle Footlight Awards.

Recent works include costumes for The Odyssey at Seattle Rep, The Tempest at Pittsburgh Public Theater, The Juliet Letters at Urban Arias, The Children at Studio Theatre, Lost in the Stars (CAPUCLA), and Persians (Getty Villa) with SITI Company; sets for A Jordan Downs Illumination and Magic Fruit with Cornerstone, Topdog/Underdog with Avant Bard, and Winnie the Pooh with Adventure Theatre. Nephelie is an ensemble member of Cornerstone Theater Company with whom she has designed many plays about many communities across California. In 17 seasons at South Coast Repertory, her set and/or costume designs have included Motherf**ker with the Hat, Charlotte’s Web, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Safe in Hell, and many others. From coast to coast, her designs have been seen at Center Theatre Group, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Intersection for the Arts, Portland Center Stage, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Guthrie Lab, Court Theatre, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, and Shakespeare Santa Cruz, among others.

Geoff KorfLighting DesignerGeoff Korf has been designing community-based theater productions since 1992. He is a member of the ensemble of Cornerstone Theater in Los Angeles. As You Like It is Geoff’s seventeenth lighting design at Seattle Rep. Geoff teaches lighting design at the University of Washington and currently serves as the Interim Associate Director of the School of Drama. He is a graduate of California State University, Chico, and the Yale School of Drama.
Kevin HeardSound DesignerKevin Heard is a Seattle-bred, NYC-based sound designer and producer. For Seattle Rep: The Odyssey, Buyer & Cellar. Sarah LovettMy artworks, giant playful creatures, come from dreams and have personal significance in life and transformation. The process of creation and construction is a large part of the enjoyment in making and innovating. These are carefully crafted giant puppets, lightweight, articulated, illuminated–engineered to be easy to move in play. The giant puppets are beautifully crafted to delight children and adults. On the other side of my life, I am working with intuition and perception as a psychic and healer, and as a teacher. Creativity has brought me to an intersection between the seen world and the invisible, the other side, the energy behind it all. As an artist, I use and develop my ability to receive and process information through a unique perceptive lens, bringing art, images, ideas, into form.
LQ Lion DanceLQ Lion Dance Team is an enthusiastic group of youth who are committed to preserving the art of Lion Dancing and providing cultural enrichment to their local communities and beyond. They are a part of the Lieu Quan (LQ) Youth Group based out of the Co Lam Pagoda in Seattle, WA. LQ Lion Dance was formed out of this youth group as a venue for members to learn more about Vietnamese culture, contribute to the community by performing, and help support the youth group through donations.
Lucha Libre VolcanicaLucha Libre Volcánica is an action-packed, all-out war between rudos and técnios who fly into battle via daring, acrobatic attacks of epic proportions! Lucha Libre translates literally as "free fight," and is a traditional form of Mexican wrestling that has its roots in the early 1900s. Lucha Libre is noted for its fantastical costumes and acrobatic flair. Its iconic characters and costumes often draw upon historical myths of good and evil, as well as cultural traditions such as Día de los Muertos. As the premier Lucha Libre troupe, Lucha Libre Volcánica is the only place to see classic Lucha Libre action in the Pacific Northwest.
Seattle Hand DrummersSeattle Hand Drummers' mission is to enhance their communities through positive connections using the experience and power of rhythm and group drumming. SHD and its members are dedicated to giving back and serving the needs of others in our greater Seattle area. Community engagement by way of learning, loving, teaching, and sharing is our main goal and directive. Founded here in Seattle in 2010,
Nathan Collins (Director of Operations and Facilitator) started the group as a small drum circle and grew it into the local community nonprofit it is today. Nathan is a trained Drum Circle Facilitator (DCF), teaching workshops and Playshops in all aspects and areas of our communities, as well has hosting and co-organizing weekly family friendly drum circles and rhythm activities. Currently our groups and communities have over 2,000 local and international members. Building Community One Beat At A Time.
Sue TinneySue Tinney brings delicious, wearable art into everyone’s world through her work and her shop, More Sue! The shop came about because Sue chose to embrace her lifelong love of color and art, and a whole community of friends supported her with the chant,“More Sue!” Sue realized that a phrase that started as a joke actually reflected her values: buying “local,” supporting your community, and remembering what gives you joy. Path with Art harnesses the power of creative engagement to support people recovering from homelessness, addiction, and trauma, and, in turn, builds community and stability. Path with Art provides cultural engagement opportunities, exhibitions, and showcases, as well as regularly occurring free art classes across a variety of artistic disciplines. Seattle Rep's Public Works augments Path with Art’s offerings by holding different workshops from Shakespeare to musical theater.
ReWA (Refugee Women's Alliance) is a non-profit, multi-ethnic organization that promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership, and strong communities by providing refugee and immigrant women and their families with culturally and linguistically appropriate services including ESL classes, vocational training and employment assistance, behavioral health, domestic violence services, early childhood education, after-school youth programs, and naturalization and legal services. Seattle Rep's Public Works workshops are held with teen women focusing on storytelling and physical presence in an empowering social justice program in the spring.
Seattle Central College offers short- and long-term certificates, associate, and bachelor degrees. Students, faculty, and staff are vocal advocates for social change, both on campus and in broader movements. Seattle Rep's Public Works offers weekly bilingual Shakespeare workshops as part of the college's acting class.
Sound Generations/Ballard NW Senior Center provides older adults and adults with disabilities with vital resources to help them thrive. Seattle Rep's Public Works has partnered with the Ballard NW Senior Center for an ongoing class focused on musical theater and performance.

Nephelie AndonyadisCostume DesignerNephelie Andonyadis is based in Southern California and Washington, D.C. Recent works include costumes for The Odyssey at Seattle Rep, The Tempest at Pittsburgh Public Theater, The Juliet Letters at Urban Arias, The Children at Studio Theatre, Lost in the Stars (CAPUCLA), and Persians (Getty Villa) with SITI Company; sets for A Jordan Downs Illumination and Magic Fruit with Cornerstone, Topdog/Underdog with Avant Bard, and Winnie the Pooh with Adventure Theatre. Nephelie is an ensemble member of Cornerstone Theater Company with whom she has designed many plays about many communities across California. In 17 seasons at South Coast Repertory, her set and/or costume designs have included Motherf**ker with the Hat, Charlotte’s Web, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Safe in Hell, and many others. From coast to coast, her designs have been seen at Center Theatre Group, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Intersection for the Arts, Portland Center Stage, Great Lakes Theatre Festival, Guthrie Lab, Court Theatre, Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, and Shakespeare Santa Cruz, among others.

Geoff KorfLighting DesignerGeoff Korf has been designing community-based theater productions since 1992. He is a member of the ensemble of Cornerstone Theater in Los Angeles. As You Like It is Geoff’s seventeenth lighting design at Seattle Rep. Geoff teaches lighting design at the University of Washington and currently serves as the Interim Associate Director of the School of Drama. He is a graduate of California State University, Chico, and the Yale School of Drama.
Kevin HeardSound DesignerKevin Heard is a Seattle-bred, NYC-based sound designer and producer. For Seattle Rep: The Odyssey, Buyer & Cellar. Sarah LovettMy artworks, giant playful creatures, come from dreams and have personal significance in life and transformation. The process of creation and construction is a large part of the enjoyment in making and innovating. These are carefully crafted giant puppets, lightweight, articulated, illuminated–engineered to be easy to move in play. The giant puppets are beautifully crafted to delight children and adults. On the other side of my life, I am working with intuition and perception as a psychic and healer, and as a teacher. Creativity has brought me to an intersection between the seen world and the invisible, the other side, the energy behind it all. As an artist, I use and develop my ability to receive and process information through a unique perceptive lens, bringing art, images, ideas, into form.
LQ Lion DanceLQ Lion Dance Team is an enthusiastic group of youth who are committed to preserving the art of Lion Dancing and providing cultural enrichment to their local communities and beyond. They are a part of the Lieu Quan (LQ) Youth Group based out of the Co Lam Pagoda in Seattle, WA. LQ Lion Dance was formed out of this youth group as a venue for members to learn more about Vietnamese culture, contribute to the community by performing, and help support the youth group through donations.
Lucha Libre VolcanicaLucha Libre Volcánica is an action-packed, all-out war between rudos and técnios who fly into battle via daring, acrobatic attacks of epic proportions! Lucha Libre translates literally as "free fight," and is a traditional form of Mexican wrestling that has its roots in the early 1900s. Lucha Libre is noted for its fantastical costumes and acrobatic flair. Its iconic characters and costumes often draw upon historical myths of good and evil, as well as cultural traditions such as Día de los Muertos. As the premier Lucha Libre troupe, Lucha Libre Volcánica is the only place to see classic Lucha Libre action in the Pacific Northwest.
Seattle Hand DrummersSeattle Hand Drummers' mission is to enhance their communities through positive connections using the experience and power of rhythm and group drumming. SHD and its members are dedicated to giving back and serving the needs of others in our greater Seattle area. Community engagement by way of learning, loving, teaching, and sharing is our main goal and directive. Founded here in Seattle in 2010,
Nathan Collins (Director of Operations and Facilitator) started the group as a small drum circle and grew it into the local community nonprofit it is today. Nathan is a trained Drum Circle Facilitator (DCF), teaching workshops and Playshops in all aspects and areas of our communities, as well has hosting and co-organizing weekly family friendly drum circles and rhythm activities. Sue TinneySue Tinney brings delicious, wearable art into everyone’s world through her work and her shop, More Sue! The shop came about because Sue chose to embrace her lifelong love of color and art, and a whole community of friends supported her with the chant,“More Sue!” Sue realized that a phrase that started as a joke actually reflected her values: buying “local,” supporting your community, and remembering what gives you joy. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Seattle Rep and our second Public Works production, As You Like It, a contemporary musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy. If this is your first visit to Seattle Rep, I want to extend a very special welcome with the hope that you will come to think of this playhouse as your house. And in that spirit, I’d like to provide some background on Seattle Rep’s Public Works, As You Like It, and the making of this show.
Perhaps the first thing to say about this production is that it’s big, a larger show than any even regular theater-goers are likely to have ever seen on this stage. There are over 100 performers in the production, and more significantly, while you will see a handful of professional actors on stage, many in the cast are people who have never before been in a play; people of all ages and backgrounds from communities across greater Seattle. I expect many of you are here because you have a relative or neighbor or co-worker or friend in the show, someone who has spent the last month collaborating with As You Like It director Timothy McCuen Piggee and his creative team to create this extraordinary event. I hope this production will feel big not only in cast size, but in spirit, inclusiveness, and in its ambition for theater and our community.
With any theater production, what you see on stage is only a small part—only the final result—of the vast amount of time, energy, and effort that went into creating the show, and this is especially true of a Public Works performance. And the creation of As You Like It is only one part of Seattle Rep’s Public Works project of building community through the making of theater, guided by the values of equity, imagination, and joy. In partnership with local, community-based organizations, Public Works Director Angie Kamel leads a year-round program that invites people, especially people who normally have little access to the arts, to participate in weekly classes and one-day workshops in performing and theater arts. We also work with our partners to arrange for groups to attend shows and discuss them together, as one of our guiding principles is to provide space
and resources for people to hone their skills as theater-makers, not only as spectators. Eventually, we held auditions for As You Like It here and at all of our partner organizations and formed the ensemble you are about to see.
Public Works was my first major initiative as Artistic Director of Seattle Rep, and it is one that remains central to Seattle Rep’s artistic and civic ideals. The immediate model was a program created by The Public Theater in New
York. But the fundamental idea of a theater centered at the heart of the city, a place where a diverse group of artists strengthen our sense of the collective through their acts of shared imagination, goes back to the roots of this art 2,500 years ago. Here in Seattle, our professional theater evolved from programs created by the short-lived Federal Theater Project in the mid-1930s, programs which, like Public Works, were designed to make theater more available and more relevant to more Americans. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Seattle Rep and our second Public Works production, As You Like It, a contemporary musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy. If this is your first visit to Seattle Rep, I want to extend a very special welcome with the hope that you will come to think of this playhouse as your house. And in that spirit, I’d like to provide some background on Seattle Rep’s Public Works, As You Like It, and the making of this show.
Perhaps the first thing to say about this production is that it’s big, a larger show than any even regular theater-goers are likely to have ever seen on this stage. There are over 100 performers in the production, and more significantly, while you will see a handful of professional actors on stage, many in the cast are people who have never before been in a play; people of all ages and backgrounds from communities across greater Seattle. I expect many of you are here because you have a relative or neighbor or co-worker or friend in the show, someone who has spent the last month collaborating with As You Like It director Timothy McCuen Piggee and his creative team to create this extraordinary event. I hope this production will feel big not only in cast size, but in spirit, inclusiveness, and in its ambition for theater and our community.
With any theater production, what you see on stage is only a small part—only the final result—of the vast amount of time, energy, and effort that went into creating the show, and this is especially true of a Public Works performance. And the creation of As You Like It is only one part of Seattle Rep’s Public Works project of building community through the making of theater, guided by the values of equity, imagination, and joy. In partnership with local, community-based organizations, Public Works Director Angie Kamel leads a year-round program that invites people, especially people who normally have little access to the arts, to participate in weekly classes and one-day workshops in performing and theater arts. We also work with our partners to arrange for groups to attend shows and discuss them together, as one of our guiding principles is to provide space
and resources for people to hone their skills as theater-makers, not only as spectators. Eventually, we held auditions for As You Like It here and at all of our partner organizations and formed the ensemble you are about to see.
Public Works was my first major initiative as Artistic Director of Seattle Rep, and it is one that remains central to Seattle Rep’s artistic and civic ideals. The immediate model was a program created by The Public Theater in New
York. But the fundamental idea of a theater centered at the heart of the city, a place where a diverse group of artists strengthen our sense of the collective through their acts of shared imagination, goes back to the roots of this art 2,500 years ago. Here in Seattle, our professional theater evolved from programs created by the short-lived Federal Theater Project in the mid-1930s, programs which, like Public Works, were designed to make theater more available and more relevant to more Americans. Angie Kamel: What’s As You Like It about for you and what do you like about this adaptation?
Timothy McCuen Piggee: I think in many ways it speaks to the values of Public Works—Equity, Imagination, and Joy. What I really like about this adaptation is that it’s about the light as well as the dark, and I don’t think you always get that in a production of As You Like It. This one really focuses on Rosalind’s journey. I love the idea that we get to embrace two different communities [The Royal Court and Arden]. I like that it holds space for a variety of different talents—everything from custom tie dye to Chinese lion dance, drummers, and the inherent skills of the people in the cast. We get to see Cynthia [Linet’s —Public Works participant and local artist] artwork onstage for a scene.
AK: Is there a character that you particularly relate to?
TMP: There are aspects of each character that I find inherent in myself. But I’m really curious about Oliver. He discovers that his brother has rescued him and suddenly we have this person—who has been nothing but full of pride and enmity—confronted with that. Celia says, “Was 't you that did so oft contrive to kill him?” And he says, “Twas I, but tis not I.” We all have had that experience. “Yes, I did that, I have to take responsibility for that, but that’s not really who I am.”
It’s a play that’s peopled by those who’ve lost parents—or chose to turn their back on a parent, in Celia’s case, and having lost both of my parents I have great empathy for that; it moves me terribly. And on the other end, it’s fun to watch four couples fall in love onstage, and this adaptation makes room for the different iterations of what falling in love can look like.
AK: If you could cast celebrities in the community’s roles, who would they be?
TMP: My cast would be so angry with me for sharing this! If I

larger and complex world, but, I believe theater as an art and Seattle Rep as an institution can and should help build and preserve our community, and one of the best ways to do so is to make theater in collaboration with everyone—a shared activity that reminds us that no matter our differences, we have a vital and precious relationship and a shared desire to make our community stronger.
An important element of Public Works is that these collaborations focus on stories that are already part of our shared cultural legacy. Our first Public Works production, which we did in 2017, was a musical adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, one of the oldest and most influential tales. Shakespeare’s As You Like It is "only" 400 years old, but certainly a classic, one of the most joyous comedies by the Bard—and one of the works that created the genre of “romantic comedy” as we know it. The play's heroine, Rosalind is one of the greatest and most fully realized female characters in literature and a figure who has enchanted audiences, readers, and scholars for centuries.
Adapted by Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery with rollicking music and lyrics, this version of As You Like It features the play’s most famous speeches and passages in their original glory. Plus, it adds a few modern twists to Shakespeare’s sly gender-bending tale of diverse characters fleeing oppression, injustice, and discord to find in the Forest of Arden a place to be their true selves, build a community, and find love in its many varied forms.
I’ve always felt that Shakespeare’s vision of Arden is especially resonant for Pacific Northwesterners. Arden is a place where ordinary people provide for themselves and others, connect with themselves and others, free of the paranoia, greed, and oppressive politics that feel as much—perhaps even more—an element of our lives now as they are of the royal court that Rosalind flees in the play. I believe we regard nature as a place of restoration, contemplation, and discovery, a place to “get away to.” But, of course, Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden is an ideal; an idea of how we treat one another and live together. Any place can be Arden, even—or especially—a theater.

With our version of Duke Senior, the regal bearing reminds me of Sheila Jackson Lee, the congresswoman from Texas. I think I would probably get someone like Linda Hunt to play the Agent. I could just go on and on!
AK: Are there any surprises you’ve experienced in getting to know the Public Works community?
TMP: I just didn’t think my heart could be that big. Even in a conversation, or listening to the cast sing, or having one-on-one discussions with individuals, your heart just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger. You think, “Wow, the capacity for that kind of growth is immeasurable, incalculable,” and if just a little bit of that translates outside these walls of Seattle Rep…
The first day of rehearsal, this is where I wanted to be more than any other place. I couldn’t wait to come back. I looked forward to coming back to work.
AK: What’s your earliest performance memory?
TMP: I grew up in the Baptist Church and we had a tradition that every Easter and every Christmas, you had to partake in the Christmas or Easter program and you were handed a speech or poem that you had to memorize.
Then I had a humiliating experience—I guess I must have been in 3rd grade or a little older, but the school district had a state-wide PTA conference and they had written a script, and it said, “negro boy sings Everything is Beautiful.” In my school district,
I think I was it. I couldn’t sing very well and I remember the day of the show, I was petrified with fear. Seeing the audience, it was just a blur. But I don’t think I got the bug then; I think I got the bug in middle school. That’s when I realized that this is what I wanted to do. I played Snoopy in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown—and when I took my first school trip to NY and I saw my first Broadway shows, A Chorus Line, The Wiz, and a bunch of others—I can’t remember if it was on the same day, but it was just a double punch to the psyche and to my artistic temperament. I wanted to be a part of that.
AK: Is there anything in particular you want the audience to experience when they leave the theater?
TMP: A sense of joy. It would be great for them to recognize, even if it’s just for a second, what it feels like to be reunited with someone that, for whatever circumstances, you’ve been parted from. What
it might look like and feel like to pledge yourself to someone. That’s what I hope. And there’s such rhythm in this piece that I would hope their heartbeat is just beating to the rhythm of the room.
I’d also like them to feel as though they had been part of something important and something that was unique and that they would want to be a part of it. They would want to participate in it again in some capacity. At least, that’s how it happened for me and Public Works; it was just being in that room. I’d never experienced anything quite like that being in that space, in that room, in that time.

As Seattle Rep’s Public Works partnership with Jubilee Women’s Center enters its fourth year, we sat down with Dani Turk, Jubilee’s Employment and Education Manager, to talk about the impact of arts programming on Jubilee residents.
Seattle Rep: Jubilee Women’s Center supports women experiencing poverty to build stable and fulfilling futures. How does Public Works complement your holistic model of programs and services?
Dani Turk: At Jubilee, we empower women to heal from the past and to see promise in their future. Public Works supports this goal by creating opportunities for women to be out in the community, meet new people, exercise their creativity, and do something they’ve never done before! Jubilee also focuses on career development to bring women out of poverty, and Public Works helps participants build confidence, communications, and interpersonal skills that have a vital impact on their personal development. They stand straighter, and stand more firmly on who they are as people—especially as women who have overcome trauma and heartache. Participation in Public Works helps our residents to evolve and see parts of themselves that can be celebrated by others. For many, it has become a turning point in their lives.
SR: That’s so wonderful to hear. Several studies have noted that arts participation can reduce stress and anxiety, while fostering social connections and increasing personal agency. Have you seen similar improvements in well-being among Jubilee residents engaged in Public Works?
DT: Absolutely! Women at Jubilee have experienced trauma and tend to isolate from other people, but I’ve witnessed Public Works bring them out of their shells. One woman in particular has struggled with extreme depression, and it was the relationships she established through Public Works that ultimately inspired her to engage with life and take risks in a
way that nothing else has. Through acting and being on stage, she experienced an internal shift that empowered her to feel more and evaluate her life in a different way. She realized her treatment protocol wasn’t supporting her mental health, so she talked to Jubilee staff about changing it. She rebuilt relationships after years of isolation from her family, and now she just lights up while talking about the three generations of relatives coming to see her perform in As You Like It.
SR: Our Public Works program is guided by the core values of equity, imagination, and joy. How have you seen those values reflected in the program?
DT: Those values show up concretely in the Public Works team’s relationships with Jubilee participants. They embrace the women for all that they are, celebrate their unique selves, and find ways to make sure everyone can show up and participate fully. If a woman is struggling, I’ll get a call asking, “How can we support her?” Not all of the women at Jubilee have experienced what it means to be part of a community, and I believe the community they are
building through Public Works has been life-changing.
In terms of imagination and joy, the women are truly joyful when they get together for a Public Works class or rehearsal. There’s a levity in them, a feeling they can let go enough to light the spark of creativity emerging from their life experiences. They trust this community in a way that has allowed them to be truly vulnerable, and that is a gift; that’s how change happens.

In terms of imagination and joy, the women are truly joyful when they get together for a Public Works class or rehearsal. There’s a levity in them, a feeling they can let go enough to light the spark of creativity emerging from their life experiences. They trust this community in a way that has allowed them to be truly vulnerable, and that is a gift; that’s how change happens.

Through The Shop at the Rep, themed fundraisers, and four service projects, SRO donates more than $30,000 and over 3,800 volunteer hours each season. They also support Interns and Apprentices, assemble subscriber materials for mailings, and volunteer at the Seattle Rep admin front desk.
