What is Advising?Advising is a shared process between the student and the advisor.

The advisor will inform, guide, refer and educate the student.

The student is expected to prepare, discuss, question, follow through and learn.

BA/BS Distinction AreaBachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Intellectual Areas – Each require eight courses:

BA will require two semesters of a language and six additional courses in Fine and Performing Arts and Humanities.

BS will require eight courses in Social, Physical and Life sciences, two of which must include a lab experience.

(Breadth and applicable experience classes will count in these distinction areas as well!)

Advising Process:Tomorrow and in Future Sessions

Tomorrow – Advising for first semester (fall ’13)• Advisor will provide a new student

information sheet with course recommendations.

• Advising will be in a group setting

• Advisor will review dual credit, COMPASS placement test results, courses and requirements.

• Student will register in the lab via CougarNet (our online registration system)

Future Advising Sessions(for spring ’14 and beyond)• Students make their own appointment

online.

• Student will have reviewed Comprehensive Education plan (advising portfolio).

• Student brings curriculum guide and completed MAP.

• Advisor reviews MAP, helps student to understand curriculum, connects with resources on campus and encourages the student to reflect on current semester, plan for next semester and look forward to future semesters.

Recommendations to Expect Tomorrow

Academic Development Courses (if required) – Based on COMPASS placement test results and/or ACT scores. AD work is a University requirement and a prerequisite for future Foundations and Breadth courses. You have the option to retake the placement test if you desire.
