No Effort is needed to achieve thoughtless awareness

Shri Mataji explains that meditation, which is a state of deep silence and thoughtlessawareness, cannot be achieved by effort. She says, “We cannot meditate. We only canbe in meditation. When we say we are going to meditate, it has no meaning; we have tobe in meditation.” She adds that, “The best way is not to put in any effort. Don’t worryat what point you have a problem. Say, many people during meditation, I have seen, if they catch somewhere they go on looking after it. You just don’t have to worry. You justlet it go and it will work by itself. So you don’t have to put in any effort. This is whatmeditation is.”

“It will go on working as long as it can and it will o the miracle that has to do. You don’thave to worry about it, it knows its job. But when you put in an effort, you actuallycreate a barrier for it. So no effort is needed, to be absolutely effortless and say “let it

go, let it go” – that’s all.”

When you give or direct vibrations, clear your charkas with bandhans

etc, be in thoughtless awareness

“When you are in meditation you must allow yourself to be in thoughtless awareness, there the unconsciousness itself, your Chaitanya (vibrations) itself will take charge. Youwill start moving with the force of attention, the unconscious is going t work it out and it

is going to take you there where it wants you to go. You keep to thoughtless awarenessall the time. Try to keep to thoughtless awareness as much as you can. When you are inthoughtless awareness you must know that you are in the kingdom of God and Hisspeech, His arrangements, His consciousness is gong to look after you.”

“Even when you are giving vibrations to other people I have noticed that you are not inthoughtless awareness. If you give vibrations in thoughtless awareness you will notcatch anything ( on your charkas) because all these entities that enter within you, allthese material problems that come into you is when you are in those 3 dimensions.”

Not to condition yourself with certain emotions or the thoughts of past

“So whenever a thought comes like that you must know that you have not attained thethoughtless awareness in its full extent and that’s how you have problems which are 3dimensional. Sometime a Sahaja Yogi will find an emotional thought will come into hismind. It may be an emotion of dejection or frustration and he will be disgusted withhimself or with others. Both things are just the same. I have seen, some Sahaja Yogisget very disgusted with others; there should be no disgust that is lasting. Of course for ashort time you might feel disgust, it’s alright, past feeling or you might feel disgust withyourself may be past feeling. But if you go on hankering on to it or if you go on clinging

t it that means you are conditioning yourself. That means you are not in thoughtlessawareness that means that you are in your past, making your past a solid mass on yourhead.”

When you meditate try not to make some sort of a function out of it no. meditation issomething silent in yourself, silence in your thoughts and going to that deepocean which is within you, itself. But supposing you don’t do that, if you don’tmeditate. I can make out immediately those who are meditating and those whoare not. It’s not difficult for Me.

Those who do not meditate are always hesitating. They are confused. They can’tunderstand. And that’s why meditation is the most important thing…..Just like a human burns with the electricity flowing in it, in the same way mediation is acontinuous availability of the Divine Force. That will reduce all your agitations. Not only that, but it takes out all the negative thoughts. It takes out all the discouraging

things. And when you are meditating like that, thoughtless awareness, then you will beamazed how you are helped from within and without. It’s a terrible power that worksthis thoughtless awareness. So those who do not meditate cannot go very much far with the advantage of SahajaYoga…..If you are in thoughtless awareness, what happens to you is that you get theconfidence, complete confidence of divinity. You know you have it ..

Mediation will give you security… it will give you a real enlightenment and a completeconnection with the Divine. Without the connection of the Divine, what’s the use of

doing Sahaja Yoga?I’ve talked so much about meditation before, but today when I see all these candlesburning, I think they are all meditating. They are all in meditation and that’s how they’regrowing. In the same way, Sahaja Yogis who meditate, I know. And those who don’t, I know. And

if they have problems, I know why the problems are there……

The OM sign on the peak of Mt. Kailash

It’s very important to become thoughtlessly aware because then there are no thoughtscoming from the left or the right, from the [past] or the future. Just in the present youare there.

It’s something you all have. It’s not that I’m saying that you, but all of you have this, but steady yourself. You have to steady yourself at thoughtless awareness. How long-

that’s not the point. The point is once you’ve touched it, you’ll go on touching it…..

It is always described in all the great books, but not so clearly as I am telling you….Even for a second, if you get it, it’s a very good idea. Then you go on increasing that

second.

I think it’s a reflecting mind. When you look at something, you can becomethoughtlessly aware and then your mind deflects to the depth of what you see. That’s how you all will become really very creative Sahaja Yogis……

Many people are here who will say, ‘Mother, we don’t get that state.’  Try. Try that. Idon’t believe you cannot get it. All of you can get that thought that ‘ I can get

it.’ And you will get it. In that, you don’t have to discard anything, you don’thave to see anything, just go into meditation and you will be amazed how itwill work out. Of course, you are very much there, most of you, but still, I would say,

increase that thoughtless awareness, that area….

So today’s message is that while you are meditating, go into thoughtless awareness. Nothought is important because it’s your own creation. But if your have to become onewith the divine creation, you have t get to that state of thoughtless awareness, minimum of minimum. And that comes to you gradually if you grow and you’ll beamazed how you’ll be able to grow into Sahaja Yoga in a very big way.

Nirvichara: Getting into the StateThoughtless awareness…. Or Nirvichara is the first stage of Sahaja Yoga that isestablished when the Kundalini rises, and we get our Self Realisation, when we stop inthe ‘Present’ moment. Nirvichara occurs only when the Kundalini passes the sixthcharka, the agnya charka….and enters into the Limbic area. As soon as the Kundalini

passes Agnya, there is no thought, we are in thoughtless awareness.

The Prayer for the AgnyaBecause the Agnya charka represents forgiveness and detachment from thoughts andworries, saying the affirmation “ I forgive” will help to clear it. Another useful prayer isthe Lord’s Prayer, taught by Jesus to his disciples, which actually works to clear theagnya and silence the thoughts during meditation. It is extremely effective in helping toachieve the state of Nirvichara. Try it.

Denying the Thoughts during meditation: “Not this thought, not thisthought”

It is important that you do not fight your thoughts, but just witness them and let them

go. The attitude that helps is the feeling inside that “ I am not this thought”. By denyingthese thoughts that come, you reach a point of silence – which is the state of thoughtless awareness. No thoughts are important during meditation, because thesethoughts are creation of humans, not the creation of the Divine. To be in meditation isto enjoy the connection with the Divine.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be Done

On Earth as it is in Heaven

Give us this day our daily breadAnd forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive those who trespassed against us

Lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil

For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the Glory,

Forever and ever,

Amen.

Advice from Shri Mataji on Meditation( Given at the occasion of Diwali 2002, Los Angeles )

Have faith that the Divine will give you the light, will guide your path, will take you tothe right place, to do the r ight thing……

We are collective, we are nice to each other, we don’t tell lies, we don’t try to destroy

anyone. That means we are much above human failings and this is only because of thelight. You can see where you are faltering. It’s just you see for yourself. For that, I thinkmeditation is the most important thing.

Every day you should do meditation. Those who do not do meditation arecapable of falling down because meditation is like putting oil into lamp. Thosewho do not meditate, think they can do without it, are sadly mistaken. Theyhave to meditate morning and evening. The problem is everything comes sohandily, so simple that they don’t understand that meditation is veryimportant.

Not you, but there are many I know who get Realization, who don’t meditate and theirstyle is different. Their nature is different.Meditation is such a soothing thing…a beautiful way of connection with the Divine, that

all your problems get solved in that meditative moment.

If you are not meditating, you are not following meditation, then maybe your light willgo down. It won’t give sufficient light. It’s important, very important to find out aboutyourself, about others in the meditation.

How to do meditation, many people ask. Don’t do anything, just go intothoughtless awareness. Try to go to the thoughtless awareness. If you can getinto that condition of thoughtless awareness, you have done your job because that’s the point whereyou are with the truth, with reality, with the joy……

Ryoan-ji Temple’s Zen Garden

Zen comes from the Sanskrit word “Dhyan”, meaning meditation. One of the mostfamous things in Zen is the “zen gardens”, which are the tools and vehicles formeditation or thoughtless awareness. They’re also called as the contemplation garden.

Be in the Present, here and now. The Now is the Eternal !

Shri Mataji adds that, “In the present everything is free, everything is free to that is noteternal. In the present the eternal stays, the rest all drops out. It’s like a moving riverthat does not stop anywhere but moving river is eternal principle, all that is not eternalchanges and drops out, dissolves and becomes non-existent.”
