LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

The College of St. Rose is hosting the Northeast CoalitionBasketball League’s Championship game on March 31st, at 6:30PM.The following schools will be competing in the tournament:Lasalle School, Berkshire Farms, Troy YMCA, Vanderheyden,and Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club.The Northeast Coalition Basketball League is made up of severalChapter 853 schools and community programs for boys andgirls ages 14-18. The league formed at the beginning ofDecember 2010 and is ending the basketball season with atournament. Each participant will receive a tournament t-shirtand medal with trophies for each placing team.The league was formed to help provide behavioral incentivesfor the youth enrolled in Chapter 853 schools. Youth in theseprograms tend to suffer from low self-esteem and being involvedin a school sports team has instilled a sense of pride andbelonging.

The Brunswick Baseball League will be hosting two – 8 hrbaseball camps during the April School Break. The camps willbe conducted on Monday, April 18th, 8am-4pm for playersages 12-15 and Thursday, April 21st, 8am-4pm for players 16and up. The camps will be held at the Brunswick SportsComplex on State Rte 2. The cost of the camp will be $20 foreach player, which will include lunch, snack and a T-shirt.Players will be put thru various fielding/throwing drills toevaluate their skill levels then participate in group hittingsessions. During the course of the sessions, verbal evaluationsand suggestions on areas of improvement will be given bylocal HS coaches and BBL managers. The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick UnitedMethodist Church announced that it will award $1000 to astudent to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of2011. The money may be used for any type of expensesrelated to further education. Students do not have to belongto this Church or any other church or religion to be eligible forthis award. Interested students must apply for this award nolater than April 1, 2011. Application forms can be obtainedfrom the school’s guidance department or directly from theChurch. The Finance Committee wil l also acceptrecommendations from members of the Brittonkill School Districtcommunity who are not family members of the student beingrecommended. This award is given in memory of Harold andMabel Keyes, whose last will and testament created the trustthat provides the funding for it. Harold and Mabel wereprominent members of the Center Brunswick United MethodistChurch for many years. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schoolsthat preceded Tamarac, and continued teaching Sunday Schoolfor many years after she retired. Through this award, herlove of helping young people learn and grow will continue toreach the youth of our community. The Center Brunswick UnitedMethodist Church is located at the intersection of Routes 7and 142, just 3 miles east of Troy. DEPUTY SHERIFFS’ P.B.A. ANNOUNCES 2011 SCHOLARSHIPSThe Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriffs’ Police Benevolent Association is pleased to announce that applications are now available for the2011 Deputy Frank J. O’Brien Memorial Scholarships. Last year, the P.B.A. was able to present six $500 scholarship awards to graduatingseniors in the area, with five different public high schools being represented. The awards have been named after Deputy Frank J. O’Brienwho died in 2007 while still an active member of the P.B.A. Deputy O’Brien served Rensselaer County for over thirty years as a DeputySheriff. In the last four years, the P.B.A. has given out $15,000 in total scholarship awards. While the scholarships are meant to assist localstudents wishing to pursue a career in law enforcement or criminal justice, all are encouraged to apply. All ten public high schools in the
