Adverse Effect:ethambutol has its pharmacokinetic parameters altered by aluminium hydroxide

Severity Level:Moderate - These medications may interact resulting in the potential deterioration of the patient's condition. The patient should be monitored forthe possible manifestations of the interaction. Medical intervention or a change in therapy may be required.

Documentation Level:Good - Although controlled studies may not have been performed, several case reports have been documented and other data strongly su ggeststhis interaction exists.

aluminium hydroxide belongs to the class of Aluminium hydroxide

Aluminium hydroxide is used as an antacid and phosphate-binder.

Probable Mechanism:Aluminium hydroxide gel reduced and delayed ethambutol serum levels in a study involving 13 tuberculous patients. Aluminium/magnesiumhydroxide coadministration resulted in a reduction in the extent of ethambutol absorption and peak serum levels, in a study involving 14 healthysubjects. The clinical significance of these interactions is undetermined. Administer oral ethambutol and aluminium hydroxide four hours apart tominimise potential interactions.
