Why Student Persistence to Completion Is Important?

College retention, persistence, and graduation rates influence public perceptions of qualityState legislatures, governing boards and other funding sources are increasingly concerned about graduate ratesStudents’ and Parents’ choices of institutions today includes graduation and completion rates of studentsImproved student persistence towards graduation demonstrates an institutional focus on student learning and growth

Therefore, higher education globally is being led (sometimes kicking and screaming) into the realization that we must see significant shifts or changes in our culture – moving to a culture where student success and completion must drive 

our decision making!

Become aware of and involved in conversations throught out the global higher education community and our institutions about the impact of

• The importance and necessity of students successfully competing Gateway courses• The importance of intentional and proactive initiatives for working transfer students• The importance of utilizing technology in not only improving teaching and learning but also in tracking students and developing initiatives for improving student success

Investigate, study, and analyze the literature and research regarding the connection of academic advising in student retention, persistence, and completionAnalyze the key issues on your campus:

• Target Populations which are need in support or assistance• Risk factors affecting the target populations• Commitment levels of students and the institution to student completion• What the institution is or is not doing that negatively or positively affects student retention and persistence

• Student Success is Everybody’s Business and, thus, crosses all units of the campus – academic affairs, student affairs, and business affairs.  Therefore, academic advisors must be actively involve in developing a mission and vision for student success initiatives campuswide

• Scale up policies, programs, and practices that work. Recreate experiences that work for one student group for all students

• Cultivate a continuous improvement ethic. “What is measured gets attention”.

• Recruit and hire faculty, staff, and administrators who are committed to student learning, retention, persistence, success, and academic advising.
