InformAtIon Centre

The Information Centre is your gateway to the Volcano Park. It is located

between the towns of Plaidt and Saffig and allows visitors to experience

volcanic activity, as well as the history of the East Eifel volcanoes and stone

quarrying. The exhibits are both interesting and impressive. The whole ran-

ge of volcanic stones is presented with original exhibits e.g. a basalt bomb.

Large illuminated pictures of volcanic eruptions realistically depict the East

Eifel’s volcanic landscape hundreds of thousands of years ago. Two films

(also shown in English) with fascinating images and computer animation

take visitors on a journey back in time though the Eifel’s fiery history and ex-

plore 7,000 years of stone quarrying. Audio guides are available in English

and guide visitors through the exhibits. A visit to the Information Centre

takes about 1.5 hours.

Welcome to the Volcano Park!A volcanic area right in the middle of Germany. Dormant but far from

extinct. Just 13,000 years ago the eruption of the Laacher-See-Volcano

formed Germany’s youngest volcanic landscape in the East Eifel between

Mayen and Koblenz and between the Rhine and Moselle rivers. The Volca-

no Park is situated in the heart of this region and is a decentralised open-

air museum.

6 Information and Discovery Centres and numerous natural, cultural and

industrial monuments depict impressive volcanic activity and explain the

emergence of the landscape, as well as 7,000 years of stone quarrying

history. You can climb down 30 meters underground into the basalt lava-

cellar. Why not visit the largest Roman tuff mine and gape at the world’s

tallest cold water geyser? We hope you have a fun and exciting time during

your visit to the Volcano Park!

You can discover the exciting word of volcanoes using all of your senses

in the Lava-Dome German Volcano Museum. The Lava-Dome is located

in the town of Mendig next to the Laacher See Lake and a visit to the Lava-

Dome takes around 1.5 hours. Smaller and more grown up visitors can

explore volcanoes in a playful way with the help of a multimedia volcanic

eruption, a volcano workshop and talking stones. In the cinema visitors

are kept in suspense when past and possible future scenarios are imagi-

ned. What would happen if the Laacher See Volcano erupted again today?

An audio guide is available in English and guides you through the exhibits.

Next visitors can pay a visit to a unique landmark, a Lava Cellar 30 metres

under the town of Mendig. The people of Mendig mined the precious grey

basalt in the late Middle Ages and this created a system of tunnels and

shafts. The cellar is reached via 150 steps or in a lift and can only be visited

on a tour (of about 70 minutes).

When people think about geysers, Iceland or the USA, quite correctly,

come to mind first. However the world’s tallest cold water geyser, that

reaches heights of 60 meters, is actually found in Germany in Andernach

am Rhein. Visitors to the Andernach Geyser Attraction experience an ap-

proximately 3 hour program that is divided into 3 parts. The Discovery

Centre is located in the Andernach Rhine Park. Visitors to the Discovery

Centre are first taken on a fascinating virtual journey 4,000 meters under

the earth’s surface. Here the interactive exhibit allows them to join a CO2

molecule on its journey to the top of the geyser fountain. The tour also

features exhibits that, as well as explaining how a cold water geyser work,

also address questions relating to volcanic activity in English at special

display tables. Next you can enjoy a boat trip on the Rhine to the Name-

dyer Werth Nature Reserve. Here visitors can witness the blowout of the

world’s tallest cold water geyser, whose fountain reaches heights of up

to 60 meters.

Whilst in the Volcano Park why not pay a visit to the largest Roman under-

ground tuff mining north of the Alps. The 2000 year old Roman Mine of

Meurin is located on the B 256 near Kretz. White tuff stone was extracted

from the impressive deposits left behind when the Laacher See Volcano

erupted. Today a futuristic hall with a cantilever roof protects this unique

cultural monument.

Visitors are taken back in time to the Roman era of gruelling stone mining

on a walk through old mining chambers and shafts. A modern film is

shown in a tunnel and transports visitors right back into the Roman world

of work. Visitors get a vivid impression of over ground volcanic stone

processing in an outdoor area complete with a stone mason’s hut, smithy

and an original reconstructed crane system. Visits take about 1,5 hours.

The Terra Vulcania Discovery Centre in Mayen is devoted to the 7,000 year

stone quarrying history and features the title Stone Ages. Here visitors

become quarry workers and discover the toils and dangers of the job, as

well as the rewards of hard work with volcanic stones. The exhibit is domi-

nated by a large cinema. A mixture of flip-books, animated films, realistic

recordings and computer animation show how humans use and conti-

nue to change a landscape that has been shaped by volcanic eruptions.

The volcanic landscape that visitors explore in the exhibition is found just

next door. The open-air exhibition in Mayener Grubenfeld takes visitors

on a trip through the strange quarrying landscape with traces of mining

from various different eras, as well as the Lapidea Sculpture Park and the

Silbersee Lake. A visit to Terra Vulcania and Mayener Grubenfeld takes

about 2 hours.

Just behind the Volcano Park Information

Centre the Nette River pours out over cas-

cades made of basalt rock. The marks in the

rocks bear witness to past Roman mining ac-

tivities.

Roman burial chambers have been discovered

and reconstructed at Nickenich and Ochten-

dung. The burial chambers and elaborate rotun-

da were built completely from tuff stone and tes-

tified to the wealth of the person buried within.

Visitors are given and insight into volcanic

activity and stone quarrying on a circuit route

around the volcano. The Marienkapelle chapel

was built in the Baroque period and sits on its

tip, right in the heart of the natural landscape.

The impressive tuff deposits in the Krufter

Bachtal valley came from the Laacher See

Volcano’s eruption are still a sight to see. You

can also find the remains of a sprawling tun-

nel system from the 17th to 19th centuries.

The largest late Roman fortification in the Ei-

fel once stood on the Katzenberg. Around 70

metres of fortress walls, complete with a walk-

way and two towers, have been reconstructed

as well as a shelter that you can look inside.

The most recent highlight in the Volcano Park is the Museum of the Pu-

mice Stone Industry in Kaltenengers on the Rhine. The disused factory

where lightweight concrete blocks were made a few years ago tells the his-

tory of a 150-year old industry. With the invention of floating bricks in the

1960s the life of the people and the view of the whole region changed sub-

stantially. Pumice stones are, as well as tuff basalt and lava, volcanic rocks

with special characteristics. They arose out of the Laacher-See volcano

eruption 13,000 years ago. From the 1860s up to the present time, pumi-

ce has been the base of an economic boom that brought prosperity to the

Neuwied Basin. As one of the most important building blocks, pumice

stone was used for reconstruction work in Germany after World War II.

The history of the pumice stone industry is also a history of the products

surrounding us in everyday life. A visit to the Museum of the pumice

stone industry takes about 1 hour.

A circuit route takes you through the impo-

sing mining landscape with its strange pillar

formations. You can find traces of roman mi-

ning just next to an electric crane from the

twentieth century.

The outdoor exhibition features numerous

historic relics: a crane, a stone mason’s hut

with tools, a smithy and a many more all

help to give visitors an impression of a stone

cutter‘s working conditions.

The Ettringer Lay is a unique monument from

the modern stone industry. Cranes, crane pe-

destals, rails and the remnants of buildings

all bear witness to intensive quarrying from

the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Nastberg Volcano showcases the secreti-

ve history of a volcanic cone and is characte-

rised by the explosions created when glowing

hot lava comes into contact with water.

The Ettringer Bellerberg and the Kottenheimer

Büden form the Eastern and Western flanks of

the Bellerberg Volcano. From the summit you

have a wonderful view of the East Eifel volcano

and an insight into the volcano’s history.

The Eppelsberg is a typical East Eifel volca-

no and was active some 230,000 years ago.

Modern excavation activities created a unique

window that allows a good view into the in-

side of the volcano.

The Booser Maare lakes owe their existence

to the explosive interaction of hot magma and

water. The 25 meter high Eifel tower offers vi-

sitors a unique panoramic view.

The Wingertsbergwand is a world renowned

volcanic outcrop of the Laacher See Volcano

and shows the powerful force of the eruption

that took place some 13,000 years ago.

On a circuit route you can discover the stun-

ning mining landscape with its imposing lava

walls. Numerous cranes, crane pedestals and

retaining walls bear witness to past activity.

From a volcano to the Roman Bridge at Trier

– this story tells the tale of the Hohe Buche

Volcano. During your visit you can see a lava

stream, where the basalt lava was mined in

Roman, medieval and Nepolionic times.
