Watch therefore -- for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning -- lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. Greetings:

I like Advent Sunday - The First Sunday of the Advent Season. Perhaps I do because of the awareness that it ushers in the season of Christmas, which is a favorite time of year for me.

The hymns of the Advent Season proclaim the church’s doctrine of the second coming of Christ equally with the anticipation of the celebration of

the joyous mystery of his first coming to us as the babe of the manger.

We hold these two themes together with hymns such as hymn 34 “ Come, thou long expected Jesus” and on the other hymn 46 Lo, he comes with clouds descending”.

J Neil Alexander tells us that Advent was the last season of the liturgical year to develop and that its origins remain obscure.

Liturgical historians suggest that the origin of Advent is connected to the practice of preparing for the sacrament of Holy Baptism at Epiphany (January 6)

There is a sixth century synodical document which calls the faithful to a period of penitence from November 11 to the Feast of Epiphany, thus making Advent parallel to the season of Lent.

In Rome however it seems as though the season was less penitential in character and focussed more on the joyful anticipation of Christ’s coming. It is this particular practice that has been followed largely by the church.

Here in Barbados as we come to Advent Sunday we also celebrate forty-eight years of Independence. We must pay close attention to the words of our National Anthem as we sing

The Lord has been the people's guide For past three hundred years With him still on the people's side We have no doubts or fears”

These are words of faith, hope, and courage. They reflect the understanding that God is our refuge and strength. (Psalm 46)

The theme of th is years ’s Independence observance “Hope, healing and strength though unity also speaks to our responsibility and commitment to continuing that process of building community together.

May God’s grace be with us as we launch out into a new liturgical year today, and may God’s continued blessing rest upon our country Barbados

The annual Independence Service will be held TODAY Sunday 30th November at 4:00pm. The venue is The Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. We are all invited to come and give thanks to God for forty-eight (48) years of Independence.
