Advent 2017 – God Creating Anew: Continuing the Reformation in Restoration Following the theme of the renewal program this summer, reflections will center on Advent themes related to the sabbatical focus: Consulting the genius of the place. Here are the topics: 12/3 & 6 Gift vs. Commodity 12/13 Creation & Reciprocity 12/17 & 20 Gratitude Join in worship on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. as well as on Wednesdays at noon and 7:00 p.m. We’ll continue with the Haugen Vespers on Wednesdays. Let Us Give Thanks While this poem/prayer is popular at Thanksgiving, I recommend reflection upon it as act of Advent devotion, relevant to the scripture texts we ponder in this season of preparation. Let us give thanks for a bounty of people: For children who are our second planting and, though they grow like weeds and the wind too soon blows them away, may they forgive us our cultivation and fondly remember where their roots are. Let us give thanks: For generous friends, with hearts as big as hubbards (squash) and smiles as bright as their blossoms; For feisty friends as tart as apples; For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us we’ve had them; For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;

Advent 2017 – God Creating Anew: Continuing the Reformation in Restoration

Following the theme of the renewal program this summer, reflections will center on Advent themes related to the sabbatical focus: Consulting the genius of the place. Here are the topics:

12/3 & 6 Gift vs. Commodity

12/13 Creation & Reciprocity

12/17 & 20 Gratitude

Join in worship on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. as well as on Wednesdays at noon and 7:00 p.m. We’ll continue with the Haugen Vespers on Wednesdays.

Let Us Give Thanks While this poem/prayer is popular at Thanksgiving, I recommend reflection upon it as act of Advent devotion, relevant to the scripture texts we ponder in this season of preparation.

Let us give thanks for a bounty of people: For children who are our second planting and, though they grow like weeds and the wind too soon blows them away, may they forgive us our cultivation and fondly remember where their roots are.

Let us give thanks: For generous friends, with hearts as big as hubbards (squash) and smiles as bright as their blossoms; For feisty friends as tart as apples; For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us we’ve had them; For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;

For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and as elegant as a row of corn—and the others—as plain as potatoes, and so good for you. For funny friends, who are as silly as brussel sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem artichokes, and serious friends as complex as cauliflowers and as intricate as onions; For friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as dill, as endless as zucchini, and who—like parsnips—can be counted on to see you through the long winter; For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening-time, and young friends coming on as fast as radishes;

Let us give thanks: For loving friends, who wind around us like tendrils, and hold us despite our blights, wilts, and witherings; And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past, that have been harvested—but who fed us in their times that we might have life thereafter; For all these we give thanks. [by Max Coots]

May the Christ for whom we wait become and remain for us a loving friend, who winds around us like tendrils and holds us, regardless of our shortcomings, and who feeds us that we might have life here and hereafter.

Grace and peace, Pastor Lyle

On Sunday, December 10, at 5:00 pm, the St. Thomas Adult Choir, along with guest musicians, will offer a Festival Service of Advent Lessons and Carols (Organ Prelude begins at 4:45pm). This year's Lessons and Carols service will focus on the messages of comfort, hope, peace, and joy, found in the writings of the Old Testament prophets, as they proclaim the coming of the Messiah. The musical selections for this service, consisting of anthems, carols, and hymns, represent the many and diverse cultural musical traditions which have influenced the Lutheran Church from its earliest days to the present age. Following the service, we will have an opportunity for fellowship, with a reception in Heritage Hall. Please join us as we prepare for Jesus's birth through this beautiful service of scripture

and song.

Lively Older Lutherans

Several members of our congregation have expressed interest in the Lively Older Lutherans group starting again! This group would be a time for socializing and sharing a meal for folks aged 60 and above. We would like to potentially start this group on Wednesdays during Advent, after the noon Advent Service. A light soup-and-bread lunch would be served.

If you are interested in participating in this group, please contact Amy Balcam in the church office or at [email protected]. We are also looking for a person (or two) to coordinate the lunch each Wednesday of Advent, and to provide a meal of soup and bread.

We will decide at the meetings if there is a desire to continue to meet beyond the Advent Season!

Poinsettias for Christmas

Order your poinsettias to decorate the sanctuary for Christmas. A sign-up sheet is posted in the narthex, with envelopes for your donation. Choose from among several colors: Red, White, or Marble -- or order one of each. The cost is $15.00 and the plants may be taken home after the 8:00 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. The deadline to order is Sunday, December 17.

The MUSH Tree

During this joyous time of giving and sharing God's love for us, the Youth of St. Thomas would like to provide a service to others in need. In the Narthex there is a MUSH Tree. The acronym stands for Mittens, Underwear, Socks, and Hats. It is our hope that the St. Thomas congregation will help us decorate the tree with MUSH, in children's sizes. The items will be given to Monroe County United Ministries to distribute to children enrolled in their preschool and to families receiving emergency relief.

Simply hang your gift on the tree or place underneath it. There is no need to gift wrap the items. There will also be a box to receive new and gently used winter coats for young children. These will be donated to MCUM Head Start.

The Greeting Tree

The "Greeting Tree" will be in the narthex throughout the Advent/Christmas season. This tree offers you the opportunity to hang an Advent/Christmas greeting to members and friends of the St. Thomas community without the expense of buying cards and stamps. You may choose from cards provided on the table or provide your own from home. Money thus saved may be given as a donation to Community Kitchen in the form of cash or check. Please make checks payable to: St. Thomas Lutheran Church with memo "Community Kitchen". There is a donation box provided on the table next to the "Greeting Tree".

From the Sveholms

The snow has been falling all day, tiny flakes that disappear on the pavement but lighten the grass more and more as the day progresses. It’s the third snow here and will probably be gone by tomorrow afternoon. We just celebrated Thanksgiving with the English Club here, a group of mostly first and second year students who gather once a week. Today we made hand turkeys and drank cider.

We’re becoming more embedded as the seasons change. Perhaps it began with the tab at the local restaurant, where we eat lunch many days at the teacher’s table. Or the attention shown our son, who chatters in English and Slovak as we walk down the street. However it’s happened, this town of 4,000 has continued to embrace us as the yellows and reds crept their way down the mountainsides, the smoke of wood-burning stoves filling the air, snow blanketing the grass and nearby basketball court.

One of my classes is constantly chattering in Slovak, but has somehow managed to practice when to use useful or user or usability between their classmate’s shushing when they get truly out of line. Students groan as they’re assigned homework, but do it anyway…most of the time. Nick received an “Oscar” for a bit part in a student video. Today’s costume contest brought a tall-haired Marge Simpson, a speckled deer, a Heath Ledger Joker, a cowboy, and a panda to one class, and our son wore Minnie Mouse ears and made faces in the mirror a bit later at English Club.

Perhaps our biggest concern was how well our son would adjust. Well, last week I left him in the library to observe a class outside of my regular working hours and after a few minutes, he took my hand and pulled me toward the door, chirping delightedly, “Bye bye, Mama! Have a good day!” I think he’s doing fine.

Tisovec from above, October 2017

In this season of thankfulness and warm feelings, we are feeling thankful. Thankful for the students and colleagues we’re learning more about each week. Thankful for the recent visit from the ELCA representatives and the upcoming visit from Nick’s family. Thankful for our son’s caregivers and their mutual excitement to see each other each day. Thankful for English-language devotions that set the tone for our Monday morning staff meeting. Thankful for laughter and shelter and good food and new friends. Thankful for the circumstances which brought us here.

Thankful for you and your prayers.

Wishing you the best in this season of thankfulness.

When The Song Of The Angels Is Stilled

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock,

The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost,

To heal the broken, To feed the hungry,

To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace to all,

To make music in our hearts.
