The Face oF PerFormance

Surface engineering specialist, Hardide Coatings develops and produces advanced tungsten carbide-based coatings which save cost, reduce downtime and optimise component life.

The full range of nanostructured Hardide coatings provide abrasion, erosion and chemical resistance to metal substrates while themselves being tough, ductile and impact resistant. The coatings are applied by low temperature chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Unlike many other ‘line-of-sight’ processes such as HVOF, the Hardide CVD process produces a uniform and conformal coating that can cover internal surfaces and complex shapes, and is ideal for tightly toleranced parts.

The coatings can be applied to a wide range of metallic substrates including stainless steels, superalloys, tool and carbon steels as well as nickel, copper, titanium and cobalt-based alloys.

hard chrome replacement

Hardide coatings are a suitable replacement for hard chrome which is currently being phased out under EU REACH and US OSHA environmental, health and safety guidelines. Many Hardide coatings match or exceed all the key properties of hard chrome plating.

hardness & thicknessmicrohardness can be varied between 400 Hv and 3500 Hv with the most popular coating targeting a minimum of 1100 Hv – developed specifically to be harder than quartz sand. Due to its impressive wear resistance, a thin Hardide coating can achieve comparable or superior performance to much thicker layers of other hard coatings. Thickness can be varied between 5 and 100 microns with a typical application thickness of 50 microns (0.002”).

Impact resistantdeposited as a uniform, crack-free coating that is tough and ductile and which will survive substrate deformations and shock loads. Tough and ductilethe coating has been successfully tested to withstand substrate elongation of 0.3% of its length (equivalent to 3000 microstrain) without any micro-cracks or damage.

Binder-freedeposited in a gas crystallisation process chemically bonding a tungsten/tungsten carbide alloy to the surface of metal components. The uniform structure does not need a binder material. As a result, the coating finish does not degrade as it wears.

Pore-free, homogeneous nanostructurevolume porosity of <0.04%, which is effectively pore-free, and contains no binder-phase such as cobalt or nickel. No through porosity from 1 micron of coating thickness. Protects the substrate against aggressive chemicals including HCI, H2SO4, HF, H2S and molten metals.

Low frictionpolishes as it wears due to its single phase microstructure. Runs extremely well when in contact with softer materials such as elastomeric seals, packing or metals ranging from brass to Inconel.

environmentally compliant replacement for hard chromeHardide-A matches the thickness and hardness of hard chrome but outperforms HCr in corrosion protection, fatigue and other mechanical properties.

Smooth and uniform ‘as coated’ finish can be polished to Ra 0.2 - 0.3 microns (8-12 micro-inches) or super-finished to Ra 0.02 (0.8 micro-inches) without the need for grinding. This finish does not degrade over time and prevents wear of counterparts made of softer metals or elastomers.
