Microgrids DefinedThe US Department of Energy defines a microgrid as • a group of interconnected loads and • distributed energy resources (DER’s) • within clearly defined electrical boundaries • that acts as a controllable entity with respect to the grid.

Basic MicrogridsBasic Microgrids for mission critical facilities have been widespread for 50+ years. They consist of several loads, critical and curtailable, grid power, and emergency diesel or natural gas generators, serving a single facility, for the primary purpose of providing power during grid outages.

Advanced MicrogridsAdvanced Microgrids have emerged in the last few years as the range of viable DER technologies has increased

• Cogeneration • Energy Storage • Fuel Cells • Solar PV • Wind

and as the values that they can provide to customers has expanded, ranging from cost reduction, carbon minimization, and participation in grid market transactions.

Advanced Microgrid ControllerTo successfully deploy an Advanced Microgrid requires a complete hardware and software solution that controls a facility’s power supply assets, connecting, controlling, and optimizing loads and generation sources to achieve each customer’s unique mix of benefits.

Advanced Microgrid Control

Advanced Microgrids differ from Basic Microgrids in one or more of the following ways…

• Multiple DER’s • Multiple Types of DER Technologies • Complex Load Management Schemes • Deploying DER’s into Energy Markets for Financial Returns • Multiple Buildings Electrically Connected • System Benefits = ↑Resilience + (↑PQ or ↓Cost or ↓CO2)
