Background Information This piece is taken from the book Advanced

Comprehensive and Appreication for Overseas Students, it was prepared by L.A.Hill and D.J.May and published by the Oxford University Press in 1962. This is the third book in the series which began with Comprehensive and Precis Pieces for Overseas Students by L.A.Hill, and continued with Further Comprehension and Precis pieces by R.D.S. Fielder and L.A.Hill.

Background Information The bazaar played an important

role in the society, which demonstrated that the handicraft economy was prosperous. People relied on that kind of economy in their daily life. It is a significant contrast to our modern society.

Introduction to the Passage 4. The main idea: Through the description, we can see a

vivid picture of the bazaar. People of every conceivable kind are entering and leaving the dim, cool and narrow bazaar. The tinkling bells of the little donkeys; the shouting of the donkey-boys and porters, the crying of the stall-holders, the arguing and bargaining of the purchasers show us a prosperous handicraft economic view in the old time.

Introduction to the Passage Para. 2: The description of the muted cloth-

market is a contrast to the gateway of the market. The noise at the gateway make people dizzy, the gloomy atmosphere of the cloth-market make people to follow suit.

Introduction to the Passage Para. 3: This para. describes one of the charac

teristics of the bazaar: the spreading of goods. Shopkeepers dealing in the same kind get together. It would be easy for customers to compare goods and prices.

trick between both sellers and purchasers.

Introduction to the Passage Para. 5: copper-smiths market is one of the most

picturesque and impressive parts of the bazaar. The loud sounds, the dancing flashes, the burning charcoal, the strokes of the bellows make a harmonious symphonic music ---- copper-smiths’ music, which is contrasted to the muted cloth-market.

arkets spreading in the bazaar look like a set of network (maze 迷宫 ), which shows us how narrow the street is.

Rhetorical Devices

metonymy: Metonymy is a figure of speech

which expresses a relation between the thing spoken of and the thing meant, in such a way that the mention of one suggests other.

Rhetorical Devices 区别:借喻(代)不同于隐喻, 1 )  借喻是指同类事物之间的比拟,而

隐喻则是不同事物之间的比拟; 2 )  借喻不是同类的概念, (similarity),

而是接近的概念,两个概念关系密切,唇齿相依。

如: White House 指美国总统府; the Pentagon 即美国国防部 .
