PROCESSION OF THE LORD OF MIRACLES
INTRODUCCIN
Year after year, thousands of
people take to the streets to
pay homage to the Lord of
Miracles. This celebration of the
Catholic religion is considered
one of the largest in the world
as come to each of their
processions around 40
thousand people. No matterthe age, profession, leadership, political office, gender or race, driven
solely by their faith, all the faithful form a human sea full of emotional
devotion that accompanies the Purple Christ in their traditional way.
The most interesting cities in the world always have parties that
represent them in any way. In Lima, October is the most important
local customs. Even the anniversary of the city or national holidays are
popular attention aroused by the processions of the Lord of Miracles,
now held in various districts and various dates, to cater for the crowds
of a city of nearly 9 million.
The "procession" is now a festival of worship, but also the opportunity
to enjoy the best of Lima and Afro-Peruvian food like kebabs, Doa
Pepa nougat (Josefa Marmanillo) and purple porridge, northerners
ceviches, emollients of Andean origin, and combinations of Peruvian
food from street carts.
The streets are decorated with "garlands and ridges" of purple and
white papers. Andean slopes covered with carpets of flower petals,
and neighbors throw flowers and paper pica pica, while important
place in every flower, speeches and even Peruvian Marinera dance
arrangements as is.
Street vendors offer candles, habits (religious uniforms) purple, Images
and holy cards, incense, statues, religious sculptures, postcards, t-

shirts, and all kinds of accessories for Catholics worship mixed with
African and Indigenous Santeria quackery.
1.
HISTORY:
The story goes that in the mid-seventeenth century a poor mulatto
painted the Christ crucified cloth wall Pachamilla within the midden,
an area where blacks were grouped Angolans living in absolute
poverty.
The November 13, 1655, at 2:45 pm there was a terrible earthquake
in Lima and Callao, knocking down churches, mansions burying
leaving thousands dead and homeless.
All walls of the guild collapsed except the weak adobe wall in which
the image of Jesus was painted. The image remained intact with no
cracking.
The image attracted lot of worshipers, with its songs and dances
semipaganos scandalized the political and religious authorities, the
Viceroy ordered the destruction of the image. When you climb a
ladder to clear painter, he began to feel tremors and chills and had
to be attended to immediately to continue its work. Then tried

again to climb but it was that caused such impression and walked
swiftly down scared of the place without finishing the task at hand.
A second man, a soldier Balcazar, of milder mood, but went down
quickly, then explaining that when he stood before the image he
saw that he became more beautiful and the crown was turning
green; for that reason did not meet the order given. At the
insistence of the authorities off the picture, people expressed
disgust and began to protest with angry voices and threatening
attitudes that drove them off to the party. The order was revoked
and it was agreed that there veneration surrender to the powerful
image.
The October 20, 1687 a tsunami destroyed the Callao and Lima and
knocked part of the chapel that had been built in honor of the
image of Christ. Feet leaving only the adobe wall with the image of
the Crucified Christ. This was admitted by the Church and its
worship was consecrated.
OIL A copy of the image was made and was carried in procession
through the streets of Lima imploring the Crucified Christ to
appease the wrath of nature. From the time it was established that
on days 18 and 19 of October the procession of the Lord of Miracles
would take place.
The processions start from the Convent of the Nazarene move to
different parts, lasting several days, to return to its starting point,are unmatched anywhere in America.

largest procession of america.
3. THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE LORD OF THE MIRACLES:
The May 3, 1766, is now accepted as the foundation of the
Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles. Those were the days of the
government of Viceroy Amat who founded formally in the first four
crews, for the processions that were already doing, they were not
organized as today, by specialized crews, but their boots and wore
the purple robe. In certain documents of the Brotherhood, appears
for the founding year of 1651, this year is accepted as the beginningof the worship of the Lord of Miracles by Angolan slaves.
Brothers move ... Move on the Lord is above Thirty-four children on
their shoulders, they carried through the streets of Lima, the
venerable Lord of Miracles. They do as their anthem: "With steadily
good Christian" are the brothers that enable the passage of theeffigy, but not yet set the official calendar, is the testimony of
Catholic faith. The brothers are carrying their candles ringed and
fanning the flames of their smoking censers of silver. The purple
habit prevails. All marching slowly, it is a human wave. A crowd that
came, and orderly slow walk, respects the discipline of the brothers.
The highest authority of the Brotherhood is the General Butler,
who in 1946 was appointed by the Archbishop of Lima and three

years. It has a Spiritual Director and Chief Operating Officer; a Close
Second and Butler; Secretary with their four secretaries and others
who see through different aspects of the Brotherhood. Several
thousand members of the Brotherhood of Boots Lord of Miracles,
among which are also political personalities, culture and sports. To
this we must add that the poles have also been charged by
dignitaries, mayors and simple people.
4. CUSTOMS:
A.SONG TO THE LORD OF MIRACLES:
Hundreds of thousands of voices, every year in the month of
October, join hearts to go to the miraculous Christ Pachacamilla,
the Lord of the Earthquakes, the Lord of Miracles for over three
hundred years goes through the streets of Lima to pour your
graces and blessings the Lima people. Habits purple as a sign of
repentance and union with the Christ of the Cross, faith-filled
throats, throats ask for miracles, hardened hearts calling for
reconciliation with the Father, joined hands and voices to praise
and bless the Son, Christ, crucified men renews the sense of pain
and suffering.

B. PURPLE HABIT:
The spread of the cult

only worked 17 years for lack of permits.
He ended up taking a room next to the chapel of Our Lord of
Miracles where their pious guarded the effigy. This feature is
very internalized in Peruvian culture, so much so that to October,
is called the "purple month" and together with mass processions
is common to see devotees who wear the habit throughout the
month.
It is also customary that Alianza Lima, one of the most popular
Peruvian soccer teams, changed the traditional blue uniform for
the fervent purple during all his matches in October.

LAS ANDAS:
The Holy Andas of the Lord of Miracles are in Nazarene, Lima, in
his sanctuary.
The floats are the structure that
makes carrying the venerated
image in procession. Loaded on
shoulders, can be interpreted as a
symbol of royalty, while evoking
allow berthing of kings. Make itpossible to carry the litter up,

The poles of the Lord of Miracles are formed first; by a sort of
table of mahogany and metal reinforcements on the image
upward; the table longitudinally crossed by four long wooden
beams that serve to transport. The crossbars, 3.46 m long, are
covered at the top by silver plates and the slightly lower padded.
The end of the legs are bronze.
On the table is a small wooden podium carved sheets coated
with silver, which underlies the image rises. In each of the four
corners of walks, a solid silver angel 1 m tall and 50 kg weight,
with wings spread, holding in his hands a lily silver cones where
flowers are placed.
Both in the front of the walk, as posterior planters also silver for
floral arrangements that are received on the course and which
also include the silver candlesticks for candles are placed five in

The canvas of the Lord of Miracles is located on the transverse

the arc coincides with the arms of the Cross. Columns, bow and
ornaments are pure silver and are surrounded by rays of gold-
plated silver 21 karat topping 33 points. At the top, on the rays,
the coat of the City of the Kings of Lima appears. Andas The Lord
of Miracles total measured 4.40 m high, 1.64 sideways andoriginally weighed about 1700kg, of which 450 kg of pure silver,
with accessories weighs about 1850 kg.

CONCLUSIONS
- The procession of the Lord of Miracles is one of the biggest religious
festivals in america because of its historical origin and the faith of the
faithful who have been infected by all America.
- We can consider the procession of the Lord of Miracles as one of the
biggest parties of Peru.
- The most important virtue of the procession of the Lord of Miracles, is
not only their cultural and religious wealth, but its inclusive, diverse
and multicultural nature. The streets of Lima and other cities in the
world where this traditional worship is practiced, fill with worshipers
of all races, conditions, origins and intentions.
