AMERICA, WHAT WENT WRONG?

Why are there so many problems and such anger

related to government in the United States?

The search for answers will examine several topics

including: politics and politicians, the welfare state,

religion, media, debts and deficits, immigration and of

course, the November elections.

WOMEN IN MUSIC IN THE WESTERN WORLD:

FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO TODAY

Women's music-making has always been a profound

part of human life, from the singing of lullabies to

infants to the ritual keening for the dead. Yet women

have been severely restricted as professional

musicians in most societies. This course will introduce

and celebrate some of the inspiring women who

nevertheless flourished within the “classical” music

tradition: composers, virtuosi and in some cases

passionate activists, from the 12th-centuryvisionary

Hildegard of Bingen to Toronto composer Ann

Southam (1937-2010). Each class will include listening,

and the lecturer will provide insights into musical

language of each era under discussion.

FILM MUSIC: THE NEGLECTED ART

One of the most misunderstood and least

appreciated aspects of moviemaking is the film

score. Even though music has been an integral part

of movies since the silent era, many believe that the

best film score is the kind that you don’t notice. In

this course, instructor Kevin Courrier addresses

that perception by tracing the long and fascinating

history of movie music, while also examining the

works of many of the art form’s great and varied

composers. From the piano player in the theatre pit

to the European exiles who created the golden

years of Hollywood, the course will explore the

relevance of movie music and whether or not a

good score can save a bad picture (or whether a

bad score can ruin a good one). The class will also

examine the impact of pop music on films and the

renaissance of orchestral music in the late 70s with

“Star Wars”. Including film clips that illustrate how

the film score works, this course bring to students

an added awareness of the strong impact music can

have on movies.

FORBIDDEN DESIRES: THE FILMS OF ALFRED

HITCHCOCK AND BRIAN DE PALMA

Voyeurism has always been an integral part of the

appeal of motion pictures. But what film directors

Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma did in their

work was to make it an acceptable dramatic

strategy. In the thrillers of Alfred Hitchcock (The 39

Steps, Strangers on a Train, Vertigo, Psycho), he

was able to manipulate our responses by pulling

the rug out from under our expectations of

conventional drama. Brian De Palma (Carrie,

Dressed to Kill, Blow Out) later borrowed

Hitchcock's cinematic language to take us deeper

and further into more contemporary issues of

sexual fear and political unrest. This course

examines how both directors, with cunning intent,

force us, the viewing audience, to face our hidden

fascination with our own perverse fantasies, our

own forbidden desires.

ROADS TO PERDITION:

THE DARK ALLURE OF FILM NOIR

For over 70 years, moviegoers havebeen drawn to

the ambiguous and cynical world of film noir. In

this lecture series, critic and author Kevin Courrier

examines the reasons for the genre's longevity.

Derived from hardboiled crime fiction (The Postman

Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity) in the years

following World War II, film noir has its roots in

German expressionist films of the early 20th

Century. Courrier will trace these origins, delve into

classic noirs (The Big Sleep, Detour and Strangers

on a Train) and show how this cinematic tradition

continues in contemporary works, such as L.A.

Confidential, Mulholland Drive, and The Big

Lebowski.

THE ENIGMATIC GENIUS OF ROBERT ALTMAN

Although film director Robert Altman worked in

Hollywood for most of his career, he didn't make

typical Hollywood movies; even his non-Hollywood,

low budget productions (Secret Honour) differed

from conventional independent fare. Because his

films transcended their genre, they rarely became

hits. Despite this, Robert Altman was one of

the most prolific and idiosyncratic of American

directors.

Film critic Kevin Courrier will examine how Altman

redefined the genre picture in the war film

(M*A*S*H*), the western (McCabe and Mrs. Miller),

the detective story (The Long Goodbye), the

musical (Nashville), murder mystery (Gosford Park),

and theatre (Come Back to the Five and Dime,

Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean). We will also examine

how his movies worked between the lines of con-

ventional story-telling to give us compelling and

elliptical dream worlds, revealing the struggles of

the independent artist continually in conflict with the

world of commerce.

“SOMEONE TO RUN WITH” BY DAVID GROSSMAN

(2004) / REVIEWED BY ANNA SHTERNSHIS

Author of six novels and three works of nonfiction,

Grossman is one of Israel’s finest and most

provocative writers. “Someone to Run With” is set

during the waning days of the Oslo era, shortly

before Grossman’s hopes for peace were dashed by

the outbreak of the second intifada. The story fol-

lows Israeli teenagers Assaf and Tamar, and Dinka,

a golden Labrador that eventually brings them to-

gether.
