Welcome to our latest prospectus for adult learning and skills courses for 2020/21

In order to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our learners and employees, we may need to adjust courses from what is published in this prospectus to comply with Government regulations and guidance. Wherever possible we will provide online learning alongside classroom-based activity. We will continue to work to ensure all learners have access to support with learning, skills and employment.

Learning a new skill is one of the most fulfilling things that life has to offer, so North Tyneside Council and Tyne Metropolitan College have once again worked together to ensure that it is easier than ever. With a wide range of courses to improve your existing skills, enhance job prospects, or simply try something new – the prospectus offers opportunities for people at any stage of their life. Courses run throughout the day and in the evenings to allow flexibility for learners – there are also distance learning courses for those who have other commitments such as work and family and may not have the time available. There is more to it than just learning the new skill though, the social aspect of these courses is also seen as a massive positive. It is an opportunity to meet new, like-minded people with similar interests to you. Learning new skills also brings you a sense of achievement, and a boost to your self-esteem, having a positive effect on your health and wellbeing. Ofsted recognised North Tyneside Council’s Adult Learning Service as ‘good’ in the last inspection and praised the high quality of teaching and support for adult learners and apprentices. The report recognises the wide range of courses that meet local employers’ and residents’ needs and a high proportion of learners progressing into employment.

TyneMet were also recognised as ‘good’ in their 2019 inspection, with Ofsted recognising the college’s high quality facilities, skilled lecturers and inclusive atmosphere. Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “Making sure that our residents are in the best position to succeed is one of our top priorities, so courses like these are a great opportunity for people in our borough to learn new skills and improve their job prospects. Learning in your place, at your pace with distance learningWe understand that classroom learning is not for everyone and learning online puts you in control. Distance learning gives you a way to take charge, studying in a place, pace and time that suits you without the need to attend classes. Our distance learning courses offer free* accredited training, letting you try something new, specialise or take your skills further. Once enrolled you will be provided with a resource pack which will guide you through your studies and an introduction to our online assessment system. This does not mean you have to go it alone. You will be allocated a specialist tutor and you can drop in and ask for help at digital support sessions.

Making your studies affordable We know how important your studies are, so we are continuously looking at keeping the fees as low as possible. Many of our learners study with us for free, a quick eligibility check with one of our advisers will find out if you are entitled to a discount or a fee waiver for your intended course. You can pay for courses via a credit/debit card and if you need more information or would like to learn more about payment plans please see below.

Paying in instalments For an Adult Learning Service course costing over £100 you can pay half on enrolment and half two weeks before the course starts. Phone 0191 643 2288 for further information. Tyne Metropolitan College offers a range of flexible payment plans allowing you to pay in instalments. Your course may be free depending on your circumstances. Advanced Learner Loan For some qualifications, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover course fees to your college or training provider (in England). Loan eligibility does not depend on your income, there are no credit checks and loans are only repayable once you are earning over £26,575.

Eligibility Whether you qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan depends on your: • Age • Course • College or training provider • Nationality or residency status You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course. Your course must be: • A Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification • At an approved college or training provider in

What you will get How much you will get depends on: • The type of course • Your course fees • The maximum loan available for your course The minimum loan you can get is £300 and is paid directly to your college or training provider. You do not have to borrow the full cost of your course – you can pay for some of it yourself.

How to apply 1. Check with your college or training provider that the course qualifies. 2. Ask them for a learning and funding

information letter – you need this to complete the application. It contains details about your course.

3. Apply online – you’ll need to register first.

You can apply by post if you cannot apply online https://logon.slc.co.uk/cas/login 4. You’ll get a letter confirming your loan – usually within two weeks if you apply online (postal applications take longer).

What you need to know You cannot apply until you get a ‘learning and funding information letter’ from your college or training provider. You can apply for a loan without a National Insurance number but you must have one before the loan can be paid.

Loan Bursary Fund You may apply to get money from the Loan Bursary Fund after you have received a letter approving your Advanced Learner Loan. North Tyneside Skills Entitlement Core skills: English and maths Most people who do not yet hold a Level 2 qualification or GCSE grade 4 (or grade C) in English and maths are entitled to work towards these free of charge. Our small workshops last around 2.5 hours and are available across North Tyneside offering friendly, supportive groups with personalised support and attention enabling you to build your skills and confidence. You can enrol on to a workshop at any time throughout the year and will be expected to attend for up to 30 weeks depending on your progress. Morning or afternoon workshops are available in: North Shields Norham Adult Learning Centre Meadow Well Connected Wallsend Segedunum Business Centre Killingworth White Swan Centre Evening workshops are available in: North Shields Norham Adult Learning Centre Wallsend Segedunum Business Centre You can also study GCSE English or maths starting each September, but you can prepare for this by enrolling on a functional skills class in the summer. GCSE classes run in the evening at Norham Adult Learning Centre for 30 weeks.

Core skills: Digital North Tyneside Council is committed to supporting everyone who does not yet hold a Level 2 or GCSE grade 4 (grade C) in Digital Skills (ICT) to develop core digital skills for learning, employment and life. Our Adult Learning Service provide a range of digital skills classes, free of charge, throughout the borough to help you to master technology and conquer computers. Classes are available in Whitley Bay, North Shields, Wallsend and Killingworth, with full-time, part-time, daytime and evening sessions available. From September, we will also be offering individuals a free skills scan followed by personalised master classes at venues across the borough to help you get the most out of mobiles and tablets and transfer these skills across devices. From an introduction to IT, learning the basic features of a computer, to digital skills for work we will help you to master the hardware and software needed in most organisations. You can study daytime or evening, full-time or part-time towards Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications with our expert tutors or we can help you to get online to study a full Level 1 Certificate in Digital Skills via distance learning with drop-in support sessions if needed.

Routes to employment We are committed to helping you secure work with a range of support including; free pre-employment training, personal employment advisers, specialist skills development and dedicated drop-in sessions helping you to take your next steps for learning and work. Our range of job-focussed courses offers individual plans to ensure you are ready for work. Our course team will connect you directly with the latest job vacancies, developing skills for work and ensuring you are prepared to meet the needs of local employers. Join us on a programme matched to your needs including: Youth Obligation – 4-day programme for 18-21 year olds helping you to map a route to your ideal job. Includes training for assessment centres, interviews and the chance to talk directly with local employers about current job opportunities. Unlocking your Potential – 2-day workshops helping to match your skills and strengths to employment opportunities and create a plan for successful interviews in your chosen area of work. Digital Skills – from your first steps with technology to mastering spreadsheets, email and presentations, we can support you to master the digital skills needed for work. Mental Wellbeing for Work – our workshop-based approaches to managing mental health and taking control of wellbeing will support you to build work-ready confidence and positivity.

Money Management – 2-day support programme to help you fix your finances and boost your budget. Hospitality & Catering Work Academy – 6-week introduction to the hospitality sector including three weeks of specialist on-the-job training with a guaranteed job interview with a local employer. Food Safety in Catering Level 2 Award - 1-day course giving you the knowledge and confidence to offer an employer safe and hygienic catering skills. Construction CSCS Card (Green/Blue) – 6 days over two weeks prepare you for your test to obtain the CSCS 5 year labourer card required for employment on construction sites. For skilled labourers with Level 2 qualifications, blue card training is also available on production of appropriate qualification evidence. Get Into courses - short programmes focussed on a particular industry or employer helping you to get ahead by getting inside knowledge directly from employers. Generation North East Generation North East is an employment support programme that helps anyone aged 18-29 discover new jobs, apprenticeships, traineeships, work experience, further training and other opportunities. We do this by working alongside local businesses to create exciting experiences, learning and careers. Our mission is for young people to reach their potential and we want to provide the support they need in their journey to employment. Whether you are feeling nervous about getting your first job or you just don’t know where to start, we can help you. Our services include: • Identifying what makes you stand out – your

skills and strengths • Providing access to training, apprenticeships

Case study: Chloe Generation North East Generation North East helped Chloe secure a role to suit her creativity. Chloe has always been really artistic, and loves drawing and painting. It was no surprise when she passed AS Level Art with an A*. After leaving school, Chloe found it hard to find a job where she could be herself and use her artistic talents. She was happy when she engaged with Generation North East as she was listened to about her strengths and aspirations. She was supported with housing issues, jobs fairs, training, work experience and job search. After a couple of months, Chloe’s adviser managed to find an apprenticeship in a tattoo parlour for Chloe. Working on reception and drawing unique tattoo templates was exactly what Chloe wanted to do. Once in post, Chloe’s advisor continued to provide support. We understand that getting the job is just the first step so we continue to help while you are in work. Her advisor discovered that although Chloe enjoyed her apprenticeship she wanted to work for a bigger company, as she felt this would give her better opportunities to learn and design. She helped Chloe to identify all the tattoo shops that met her criteria in Newcastle. They practiced approaching potential employers and showcasing her ever developing tattoo/art portfolio. This approach paid off and Chloe is now working full-time as a receptionist and apprentice tattooist in Newcastle at Rock n Roll Tattoos. She loves meeting customers and designing unique tattoos and wanted to thank the team at Generation North East.

Health and Fitness Academy A new academy at TyneMet College is to flex its muscles to help fitness professionals and novices keep pace with physical and mental health training techniques in the fast-growing health and fitness sector. The pioneering Health and Fitness Academy will deliver enhanced skills to experienced trainers and those looking to take their first steps working in gyms or other fitness arenas. Participants will benefit from introductory programmes that lead to qualifications around continuing professional development (CPD), all delivered by the academies; highly trained and experienced health and fitness specialists. Four programmes - group indoor cycling, circuit training, kettlebells and mental health awareness – form the training package, with plans to increase over time. The new academy follows from recent industry figures which found that 189,000 people are employed in the sports and fitness industry with 8.9 million people taking part in fitness activities each week. Figures also show that with 7,000 gyms for the first time, and total membership of almost 10 million, the UK has the second biggest gym industry – increasing the need for professional development. Ollie Rodley, Deputy Head of Sport at TyneMet, said: “Our Health and Fitness Academy is an important addition to the delivery of training for fitness professionals who can gain the new skills and qualifications that keeps them at the forefront of their field. “Our programmes will also support the learning and skills development of those looking to take their first steps into the fitness arena. For them, it also has much to offer. “Each course has significant face to face delivery, meaning participants get a solid understanding of the content of each qualification and how to apply the principles competently across the sector. “As well as the obvious fitness element, it also delivers key knowledge around how peoples’ mental health can benefit from exercise. Our programmes support healthy bodies and minds. “The launch of the academy is an exciting development within the North East. It will give new professional training to people who are working hard to get this region into the best possible shape.” TyneMet College is part of the Chartered Institute for Managing Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) – a professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector. The college has also recently been rated ‘good’ after an Ofsted inspection in October 2019.

Case study: Chloe Thompson – Health and Fitness Diploma (Level 3) “I was studying maths at university and just knew it wasn’t for me, I then started going to the gym as a way to let off steam and from there I developed an interest in health and fitness. I decided to look at college courses and found TyneMet offer the perfect course to help me change my career path. I really enjoy the face-to-face learning and the mix of practical, hands-on learning. I’m learning the relevant skills that I need for a career in health and fitness. During my course I have managed to secure a part time job as a Curve Circuit Coach at Curves Ladies Fitness. The experience and skills I have developed during the first six months of the course has really helped me to secure this amazing job.”

Career focus: Business support services Working in business support services is a key role within any organisation requiring a range of skills including digital, data analysis, customer service, project management, finance and many others. We can kick-start a business services career from a range of starting points giving you transferrable skills that are applicable across a wide range of businesses. Get started with a free, fully accredited certificate studied through distance learning at a pace and time to suit you. You can enrol at any time throughout the year and will receive high quality learning materials and a dedicated tutor to support you throughout your studies. Subjects include: • Level 1 in Digital Skills, including digital security, online

collaboration and digital careers • Level 2 in Business Administration, including information

Included in our adult learning programmes is our Access to Higher Education courses, which is for adults who would like to go to university, but don’t have the necessary qualifications.
