Hello CESBA Supporters!
We are very pleased to present the CESBA Fall Conference 2015 program --
– “Adult Education: Connecting People to Skills, Post-Secondary Education and Career
Advancement”. There is something new and leading-edge for everyone whether you are a
PSW Instructor, a Community Liaison Worker, a Vice Principal or a Board Superintendent.
Are you interested in learning about -- new programs boards are delivering? What about
developing better understanding on how to support students with apprenticeship goals,
learning about the latest developments in the Adult Education Strategy or hearing about how
boards are working on sustainable funding models? There are over 30 workshops, panel
discussions and presentations to choose from!
The Conference streams are:
1. Improving awareness/marketing of A & CE with school board superintendents
2. Supporting newcomers to improve their learning and employment goals
3. Developing a better understanding of apprenticeship in Ontario
4. Improving technology skills of practitioners
5. Collecting and analyzing evidence to improve student outcomes
6. Program integration processes and why they work
7. New tools to support learning and skills development
We hope you will join us on Pre-Conference day (December 2nd) and or for the full
Conference on December 3rd and 4th.
We would like to thank the members of the CESBA conference committee for their excellent
ideas, insights and contacts. They helped us produce a varied and future looking program
that truly reflects the vibrant and ever transitioning adult and continuing education sector in
Ontario. School boards in Ontario are committed to delivering free or low cost programs
that address the current and future needs of communities across Ontario.

WELCOME
Welcome to CESBA Fall Conference 2015 on December 2-4 (December 2nd is Pre-Conference)
at the Delta Toronto East in Scarborough, Ontario. This program provides an overview of the
Conference and workshop sessions. More information will be provided in a printed program
at the conference.
Note: This program is subject to change without notice.
REGISTRATION
Information about the Conference can be found on CESBA.com.
Please note: if you are attending the Pre-Conference on December 2nd and the main
Conference on December 3rd and 4th, you must register for each separately.
Note to Presenters: Even if you are a presenter, and only attending the day you are
presenting, you must still register for the conference for attendee tracking and meal
purposes. Different registration rates apply, so please choose accordingly.
WORKSHOP SESSIONS
Please use this program as a guide for selecting your workshop sessions at the Conference.
Each session is coded (101, 201, etc.), so please ensure you choose the correct session codes
when registering.
Note: Space is limited for each workshop. If your preferred workshop is full, kindly choose
another session.

Minister of Education
CESBA is pleased to announce that the Honourable Liz Sandals will speak to the audience on
December 3rd at 8:40 am. Liz Sandals currently serves as the Minister of Education. She has
served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministers of Health and Long-Term Care,
Transportation, Education, Government Services, and Community Safety and Correctional
Services. Liz Sandals has represented the Guelph riding since 2003.

Keynote Speaker
Our Keynote Speaker is Mark Chamberlain, and his talk is called 'Building Resiliency Skills
for Learning, Work and Future Opportunities.'
Mark is a high performer. He is able to pull his strengths and interests together to
accomplish many achievements in varying realms – they include the corporate sector, finding
solutions for long-term poverty and raising funds and awareness for community building
projects. He will speak about what he thinks it takes to continue to build resiliency capacity
to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
Mark is currently President and CEO of PV Labs, a start-up imaging company. Mark is best
known for his time as CEO of Wescam, the company that continues to be the leader in visual
information systems markets around the world. He is the winner of many awards including
an Academy Award for Technical Achievement, 16 Emmy Awards, a Canadian Business Tech
Award, and a Canadian Export Award. His company was repeatedly named one of Canada’s
Top 100 Employers.

Session 101: Winning Conditions for Apprenticeship
Audience: Everyone
Apprenticesearch.com is a resource used throughout Ontario raising awareness of the skilled
trades. The matching database connects people looking for skilled trades employment and
apprenticeship opportunities with employers offering apprenticeship training and jobs. Over
the last 15 years, apprenticesearch.com has helped people navigate the fragmented
apprenticeship career pathway. Averaging more than 1,000 matches between employers and
job seekers annually, they will share their niche labour market findings in a new report.
Presenter: Kelly Hoey – Kelly is the Executive Director of HIEC. HIEC is committed to
advancing cooperation between business and education in support of workforce and
economic development. Kelly takes great pride in working in partnership with employers,
community agencies and all levels of government. Her focus has been on harnessing
technology to connect stakeholders and build community capacity through
apprenticesearch.com and EmployerRegistry.ca. Kelly is passionate about experiential
learning and helping youth make informed career decisions.
Co-Presenter: Dana Stott – Dana is an Apprentice Liaison with apprenticesearch.com and
works with applicants and employers to make connections. Dana is a strategic
communicator with a passion for the skilled trades and an experienced researcher who has
a knack for gathering and analyzing data.
Session 102: Continuing Education Funding, Reporting and Register
Overview (Part 1)
Audience: ESL/FSL, Administrators, New Staff in A&CE
A review of 15-16 funding rates and the mechanics of continuing education registers
including Adult Daily Enrollment and funding calculations. This is a 2-part workshop.
Presenter: Namita Aggarwal, Toronto District School Board
Co-Presenter: Rene Bourget, Comptroller of Finance, Upper Grand District School Board

Session 103: A&CE Business Model 2015
Audience: Everyone
The Halton District School Board's (DSB) review of A&CE has led to the adoption of a business
model that aligns with the EDU's Adult Education Strategy. This session will update delegates
on the progress made to develop a more client-centred approach to service delivery that
results in improved pathway planning and integrated service for learners; as well as
providing a stronger voice and profile for adult education in the community.
Presenter: Kathy Mills – Kathy is Chief Administrative Officer with The Centre for Skills
Development & Training, a not-for-profit affiliate of the Halton DSB. Her background as an
educator and entrepreneur has helped Kathy play a pioneering role in the development of
an organization through which the Halton DSB extends its reach to serve the employment
and training needs of its whole community, including its businesses.
Co-Presenter: Tara Connor- Dr. Tara Connor is a practising educational leader with the
Halton District School Board. She has extensive experience in a broad array of education
settings including teaching in both the private and public systems, as well as working with
students at the elementary, secondary and university levels.
Session 104: Strengthening VOICE (Verbal Objectives In the Classroom
Environment)
Audience: Everyone
It is the hope of the presenter that participants will walk away from this session with a
desire to think about planning and implementing VOICE, or a similar program in their schools
as a way to assist newcomers into Canadian classrooms with a support network that assists
not only with strengthening voice, but also assists in the cultural transitioning needs that
students may have. A sample toolkit will also be available for viewing.
Presenter: Lorraine Nelson - Lorraine is a Registered Nurse who has been teaching at
Centennial College in the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program for three years. Lorraine
and the PSW team at Centennial College have a special interest in strengthening students'
knowledge, confidence, feelings of belonging, and VOICE by building supportive networks of
caring in the classroom.
Co-Presenter: Karen Mayer - Karen is a Registered Nurse who has been teaching PSWs for
the past fifteen years. As Chair of the PSW Committee, Karen is always looking for
opportunities to collaborate and share best practices in teaching. This program has the
potential to improve both the PSW and ESL student experience, as well as any adult student
in any day or continuing education program.

Session 105: Learner Gains Assessment
Audience: LBS
The College Sector Committee, in partnership with all LBS sector and stream organizations,
have completed a project to expand an online assessment that may be used in LBS for
Learner Gains. This project also provided informed advice to MTCU on Learner Gains
implementation. Participants will learn about the assessment and other resources developed
within the project.
Presenter: Sandi Hennessey – Sandra worked in adult education in the college system for
30+ years. She has been involved in various adult education, apprenticeship and Essential
Skills research and development initiatives nationally, provincially and regionally. She now
works with the CSC to lead the development of ES web applications, which combine ES
assessment with career research and online learning plans.
Session 106: Bridges Out of Poverty (repeated in Session 401)
Audience: Everyone
SCDSB, in partnership with the County of Simcoe, has worked diligently to incorporate the
voice of lived experience into their Bridges Out of Poverty workshops. The team of trained
facilitators have done an excellent job in raising the awareness of students and clients living
in poverty, and how to better support our community clients as a result. The collective
impact of a focused priority within all of Simcoe County on poverty reduction strategies has
been profound.
Presenter: Dionne Thomson - Dionne has been working in A&CE for 10 years and been facilitating Bridges out of Poverty workshops for the past 7 years. Recently she earned her Master of Education where she studied Narrative Inquiry and the power of story. In her role as a Site Coordinator of an Adult Learning Centre, she heard firsthand stories of lived experience and she is forever changed by the strength and integrity of the students she works with.
Session 107: Every Learner-Every Way: Adult Education Transition Practices
Audience: Credit, ESL, FSL, LBS, Principals, Vice-Principals, New Staff, Credit Courses
This presentation will outline current student success pathways and how we integrate Non-Credit Adult ESL and LBS programs with various Adult Credit programs. A focus on pathways to success with a review of pertinent case studies. Time during the presentation will be allotted to discuss your specific client needs and program options. Presenter: Allan Timmins – Allan has been the Principal of Alternative, Adult and Continuing Education Programs for the Greater Essex County District School Board for the past three years. Before this he spent 12+ years as a secondary school Principal and Vice-principal in both intercity and county school locations, He also has experience in county and intercity

locations as a senior science teacher, alternative education teacher and over 10 years of outdoor education experience. Co-Presenter: Chris Szpak - Chris is the Vice-Principal of Alternative, Adult and Continuing
Education Programs for the Greater Essex County District School Board. As a new Vice-
Principal of this program, he brings over 9+ years of experience as a county and intercity
secondary school Vice-Principal and 15+ years as a secondary school senior science teacher
in Ontario and Alberta.
Session 108: Community Hubs in Ontario: a Strategic Framework and Action
Plan
Audience: Everyone
Presenter: Karen Pitre (LL.B, BASc)- Special Advisor to the Premier on Community Hubs,
has extensive stakeholder consultation, strategic planning and project management
experience at all three levels of government. She has worked at Metrolinx as the consulting
Executive Director of Electrification, with the Toronto District School Board-Toronto Lands
Corporation, on the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid and with Waterfront Toronto. Karen is also a
steering committee member of Community Assets for Everyone and was the Founding Chair
of the Toronto Sports Council.

201: Navigating the Road to Apprenticeship
Audience: LBS, Employment & Skill Development, New Staff in A&CE
This workshop will provide information on the apprenticeship system in Ontario, tailored to
educators and support staff in the adult education system. Participants will gain information
about career exploration resources and programs, financial supports, minimum entry
requirements, and important steps for preparing students for a career in one of Ontario's 156
skilled trades.
Presenter: Yacine Dottridge - Yacine is the Stakeholder Relations Coordinator for the
Ontario College of Trades. He has presented to thousands of students, educators and
counsellors around the province about the apprenticeship system and the career
opportunities in Ontario's 156 skilled trades.
202: (French) Comité d'affaires francophones - réseautage
Audience: ALS/FLS, alphabétisation et formation de base, emploi et acquisition de compétences,
directrices et directeurs d’école, directrices adjointes et directeurs adjoints
Cet atelier permettra aux participants de partager les renseignements à jour relatifs aux
divers projets qui se rapportent spécifiquement aux besoins des conseils francophones en
province.
Presenter: François Richard – Since 2011, François has been the Principal of Éducation
permanente . Prior to this, he was Principal and Vice-principal of both elementary and
secondary schools.. He has worked as a teacher, guidance counselor and computer
technology specialist since 1984. He serves on CESBA’s Board of Directors and is responsible
for Le groupe des affaires francophones.

203: Continuing Education Funding, Reporting and Register Overview (Part 2)
Audience: ESL/FSL, Administrators, New Staff in A&CE
A review of 15-16 funding rates and the mechanics of continuing education registers
including Adult Daily Enrollment and funding calculations.Updates and opportunity for
discussion on progress with OnSIS submissions for funding purposes and Enrolment Reporting
Initiative will also be provided.

204: PLAR for Mature Students - Overview of Process and Resources
Available
Audience: Credit, PLAR for Mature Students Assessors, Administrators
This workshop will provide an overview of the PLAR for Mature Students resources and
supports available to practitioners. Specific attention will be paid to supporting new
assessors through showcasing new online videos for new assessors and promoting the CESBA
mentor/mentee PLAR for Mature Students network.
Presenter: Lori Neale, Lori is a Project Coordinator for CESBA and Andrea Murphy, Andrea
is the Credentials Assessment Learning Centre Resource Support TASS Program Leader for
her board. She is an experienced PLAR for Mature Students practitioner and workshop
facilitator.

205: Hybrid Course Delivery in A&CE
Audience: Credit, Principals, Vice-Principals, New Staff in A&CE
This session provides an understanding of what a hybrid course is comprised of and how our
A&CE programs utilize the hybrid model course in different programs - Adult Day School,
FASTtrack, & D2L Night School Tutoring Aspect. Experience, data and results will be shared.
As well, information about province-wide resources and supports available to boards to

learner and perennial volunteer. She is also a social entrepreneur who enjoys writing e-
books for Amazon and making bookish crafts.

works as project staff for Community Literacy of Ontario (CLO). Through CLO’s many online
learning projects, Vicki discovered a passion for social media. In her personal life, Vicki
participates in an annual cycling event that takes her around Lake Ontario raising funds for
the family foundation.

303: Immigrants and School Boards-Results through Collaboration

Administrators and decision makers who think outside the box find untapped resources
already in their school boards to improve Continuing Education programs and enrich their
school communities. Resources range from individual competencies to community support
networks, and include the intellectual, linguistic and cultural capital of immigrant
communities. This session reflects how boards can collaborate with their schools, Ministries,
post-secondary institutions, and professional associations to harness and support immigrant
input, deliverables and outcomes.
Presenter: Lesya Alexandra Granger - Since 1990 Lesya has worked in education, and is
currently the Coordinator of the International Languages program at the Conseil des Écoles
Catholique du Centre-Est (CECCE). Lesya manages over 400 language instructors and
teachers working with 6000 elementary students and 475 secondary students learning 27
languages. She works with school principals and colleagues in universities on projects that
engage educators, parents, and students in the language learning process.
304: Madness in the Classroom: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
Audience: Principals, Vice-Principals, Superintendents, New Staff in A&CE
This workshop will focus on describing current challenges that impact learning for students
with mental health issues (MHIs) and engage participants in a collective brainstorm on
strategies for creating inclusive classrooms. Participants in this workshop will gain an
understanding of (1) barriers facing students MHIs, (2) ways that traditional approaches to
education further marginalize students with MHIs, and (3) ways to foster inclusive learning
environments that are considerate of students with diverse learning needs.
Presenter: Lauren Munro - Lauren is a community-based researcher pursuing her PhD in
Community Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her approach to research and pedagogy
is grounded in her lived experience of madness and, as such, she favours projects that
prioritize marginalized voices and emphasize accessibility. Lauren strongly believes in the
importance of integrating academia and grassroots activism to create projects that push
boundaries and challenge the status quo.

worked at the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks where she was the staff lead for
all English projects (resource development, workplace materials, literacy, language
benchmarking research and test development).

Programs - Elementary and Secondary Program at the Ottawa Catholic School Board for
eight years. She has a background in linguistics and previously managed the adult English as

SCDSB, in partnership with the County of Simcoe, has worked diligently to incorporate the
voice of lived experience into their Bridges Out of Poverty workshops. The team of trained
facilitators have done an excellent job in raising the awareness of students and clients living
in poverty, and how to better support our community clients as a result. The collective
impact of a focused priority within all of Simcoe County on poverty reduction strategies has
been profound.
Presenter: Dionne Thomson - Dionne has been working in A&CE for 10 years and been facilitating Bridges out of Poverty workshops for the past 7 years. Recently she earned her Master of Education where she studied Narrative Inquiry and the power of story. In her role as a Site Coordinator of an Adult Learning Centre, she heard firsthand stories of lived experience and she is forever changed by the strength and integrity of the students she works with.
402: Fast Forward: Business I.T.
Audience: Credit, Employment and Skills Development, Principals, Vice-Principals, Superintendents
Participants will learn about an exciting new program in Business I.T., which acts as a
pathway for students to college or the workforce. Students take courses in Business and
Information Technology (e.g. Communication Technology, Computer Networking), then go on
an 18 week co-operative education experience. This gains them entry-level requirements for
any I.T. position or college entrance. Options for certification in A+ and CISCO CCENT also
exist.
Presenter; Eric Dallin - Eric has been an educator for 20 years (secondary). After
completing his MBA and working in the business industry, he started his teaching career in
adult education. Nine years later, he became an administrator. Currently, he is the
principal of Yorkdale SS & ALC in Toronto, one of the largest high schools in the system
with over 1700 students. Eric has a passion for student success and making a difference in
his community.
Co-presenter: Jon Zivku - Jon is a program leader (Business, Co-Op, I.T.) who currently
teaches at Yorkdale ALC. He has been with the TDSB since 1999 and with Yorkdale for 12
years as a continuing education teacher and contract teacher. Starting as an English
teacher, Jon evolved into teaching computer technology courses and was part of the team

that introduced Cisco's Networking Academy program in 2001; he is also a backbone of our
FF-BIT program.

403: Cultivating Personal Gifts: Kindness and Awareness
Audience: Principals, Vice-Principals, Superintendents, New Staff in A&CE
Continuing education and mindfulness practice naturally integrate well. One of the benefits
of mindfulness practice is a heightened awareness to your inner experience as well as your
outer environment, including other people. This interactive session introduces participants
to mindfulness practices to support relaxation, and heighten awareness to the mind's
contents and emotional states. By paying attention to experience of paying attention, one
can learn to be your own best theorist to improve your relationships.
Presenter: Jennifer Motha - Jennifer has been a teacher with TDSB for over 16 years in
variety of capacities, including supervising and mentoring student teachers. While she has
often thought of herself a holistic educator, her recent research/thesis gave her the
language and insight into the benefits of mindfulness meditation as means for teachers'
personal exploration, development and integration. She discovered that a holistic
contemplative stance supports more meaningful pedagogical relationships with students
and colleagues.
404: Using Data to Improve Program and Learner Success in A&CE

Would you like to use data better to drive program delivery and learner success in A&CE?
This session will profile how several boards are using different sources of data to answer
school improvement questions. Data sources highlighted will include SMS system data, in-
house data, focus groups and external data (e.g. Ontario College Application Service
(OCAS). Strategies to engage school communities in this effort and to use data to leverage
board wide support and external partnerships (e.g. with colleges) will be shared as well.
Presenter: Dr. Tara Connor - Dr. Connor is a practising educational leader with the Halton
District School Board (DSB). She has extensive experience in an array of education settings,
including teaching in both the private and public education systems within the province of
Ontario, as well as working with students at the elementary, secondary and university

ignite the value of a brand and strengthen its character

the general public, public policy people, and government leaders. CESBA is undergoing a
branding process and in this workshop Bernadette will walk through the steps used to
generate a positive branding process, and a "brand" that is enduring and stands apart from
competitors.
Presenter: Bernadette Beaupre - Bernadette has worked as a literacy facilitator, ESL
instructor and a manager at the Centre for the Hearing Impaired in Ottawa. She has
worked as an Executive Director in a newcomer organization, an anti-poverty organization
and in the community based employment field. Bernadette joined CESBA as the Executive
Director in January 2013.
Co-Presenter: Gary McGuire - A creative brand consultant that imagines brands that move
people. Gary believes any brand, big or small, can be a leader in the consumers mind. He
has a track record to prove it with over 20 years international experience in building brands
for upstarts, start-ups and established global monsters. These have included BMW MINI,

406: Relationship, Connection and Educational Success

Participants will learn about an adult education success story in a recent short pilot program
with clients from the Inuit community. The focus of the presentation will be on what success
looked, sounded and felt like. Workshop participants will be exposed to a restorative
andragogy that brought an intentional practice for building, maintaining and repairing
classroom relationships. This resulted in connection, validation and student success.
Presenter: Joyce Nolan - Joyce is the Coordinator of the LBS program at the OCSB. She has
experience with a wide variety of adult learners including LBS, job readiness and co-op

Presenter: Donna Kelly - Donna is a Career Development Practitioner at CareerLink
working as an Employer Consultant. Donna's background includes 10+ years’ experience as a
Job Developer for a Mental Health Agency, Recruitment Manager, International Healthcare
Recruitment and Placement Manager, Private Career College. Last year, CareerLink placed
over 120 people, with multiple barriers to employment, 70% were youth (29 and under).
She builds strong employer and candidate relationships to ensure the best possible
employment outcomes.

more than 23 years. She started her career as a corporate trainer transitioning adults from
typewriters to computers. Then she developed and designed curriculum and facilitated

is passionate about empowering people to reach their fullest potential.
408: Young Parent Adult Day School

Adult and Continuing Education in the HWDSB has created a program intended to help new
and young parents return to school to obtain secondary credits. The program integrates
teaching secondary credits with a Secondary Teacher and learning parenting skills from an
Early Childhood Educator in the classroom. Parents bring their babies to class and their
learning is linked to their babies.

believes in supporting and empowering her leaders to take risks, which respond to student
