The investigation of paper’s material intelligence began with an interest in shifting from the “generative” digital environment to the analog realm in craft and tectonics. Analysis of a primitive’s material behavior (in this case, the paper plate) led to an exploration of its expressionistic implica-

tions as an immersive field. A higher level of complexity emerged from a sec-tional investigation of the aggregated system. This generated a newer structur-ally self-dependent & sophisticatedly detailed primitive which can operate in a multi-linked field condition.

Using logic of indexical map-ping /tracing, the transfor-mation of the CBS Build-ing’s trough-like plaza’s

“dead space” into a high traffic node of transportation called for the need of a post-semiotic sen-sibility. Indexical diagrams were used as layers of information bro-ken down into a tactile source of code which can be translated in 3-D digital software. The blocks of 52nd Street between Fifth and Seventh Ave-nues during the mid 2oth century became renowned for its abun-dance of jazz clubs and dynamic pedestrian atmosphere. The site’s rich history becomes a source of influence in the design process. Three indexical diagrams of the present day pedestrian/vehicu-lar traffic and flows, the sectional qualities of brass jazz instruments, and the decoded data of Theloni-ous Monk’s sheet music for 52nd Street Theme, constitutes the origi-nal genetic sources for the design. The deformation of the last diagrammatic layer (Monk’s musi-cal data) by the superposition of the first two layers, and then fi-nal determination of programmed spaces induced by pauses and rhythm changes in the music, cre-ates an internal genetic program which transforms them in encoding devices removed from their former symbolic resonance.

Exploring and developing spaces best suited to house, nurture and inspire research, development and advertisement of advanced material business-es whose main objectives are to create new relationships and exchanges between water and architectural transportation bodies. By exploring natu-

ral models of structures related to snowflakes/frost/ice-crystals, newer mod-els were derived using scripting strategies. Organizing logics which suggest a method of rhythm and detail creation that can be further developed to deploy the incubator program on site. With the use of scientific data that correlates axial ratio vs. rate of veloc-ity to the ‘Diffused Limited Aggregation’ growth rule-sets of snowflakes, the scripted models attempt to account for extremely entwined circumstantial/en-vironmental factors, in order to engineer spaces that structurally act as shared programmatic moments of circulation, workspace, research labs, and adminis-trative offices etc. Resulting in a accumulation of spaces and voids physically competing for programmatic hierarchy, addressing the problematic formality and informality of defined spaces within Business Incubators and the buildings ca-pacity to accompany cultural and technological speed. On site, the incubator creates a direct mutual relationship to the work developed within it and the exist-ing surroundings, conscience of future scenarios of public programmed space.
