without a contract from the PCT

The UDA

• UDAs are for complete courses of treatment (COT)!• Band 1 - 1 UDA for any COT involving prevention,

diagnosis, x-rays referral• Band 2 - 3 UDAs for COT involving restorations,

extractions, RCTs (includes prevention and diagnosis)• Band 3 - 12 UDAs for COT involving laboratory

appliances (inlays, onlays, crowns, bridges, dentures, splints etc)

• 1.2 UDAs for urgent one-off treatment

What you need to know:

• Patients want NHS treatment especially for children, they have paid their taxes!

• Patients are confused by what is private and NHS

• Dentists are confused• Health is NHS, beauty is private!

• Successful practices generally start NHS and through communication and trust, increasing the proportion of private dentistry they ‘sell’ to patients

• The GDC requires you at all times to act in the best interests of patients

• British patients are inquisitive and need full explanations of treatment options

• British patients want excellent customer service in a timely manner

• British patients respect you as a professional once you have proved yourself.

• There are guidelines that need to be followed: NICE – the National Institute for (health) and Clinical Excellence

• Antibiotic prophylaxis (new NICE)• IR(ME)R 2000 (lead aprons)• FGDP(UK) radiography in general practice (BWg &

OPG frequency)• NICE (3rd molars & frequency of recalls)

• You cannot call yourself a specialist unless you are on the appropriate (UK) GDC list

• There is no Specialist list in Implants

• No general anaesthetic in general practice• Sedation is conscious and governed by

standards and guidelines• Patients expect local anaesthetic and

temporaries• Orthodontics is generally done by specialists

and free to children on NHS

radiographs• Diagnosis• Treatment options – risks and benefits and costs, so

patient can give an “Informed consent”

• Recall arrangements• 15 minutes – check-ups!!• 80% of disease is in 20% patients• 60% of 5 yr olds have no caries

• White fillings in posterior teeth• Sealant restoration – NHS• Restorations in two or more surfaces involving the

occlusal surface (MO’s, DO’s, MOD’s etc) – private• Composites for cosmetic reasons – private • Amalgam is the “Material of choice” on the NHS for

posterior restorations involving the occlusal surface), except children and pregnant mothers
