Mission Statement of NYU New York University's mission is to be
an international center of scholarship, teaching and research
defined by a culture of academic excellence and innovation. That
mission involves retaining and attracting outstanding faculty,
encouraging them to create programs that draw the best students,
having students learn from faculty who are leaders in their fields,
and shaping an intellectually rich environment for faculty and

The Story of New York University Athenaem, a society promoting
the advancement of science, art and literature formed in early 19
th centaury 1829 group of nine men met at Reverand James Matthews
home to establish University of the City of New York April 18 th,
1831 the New York State Legislature chartered the University of the
City of New York NYU was founded as A Private University in the
Public Service. Focused on promoting social mobility within the
cosmopolitan environment - First building, University Building
built in 1833 (Washington Square East) - 1980s President Oliva
brought Residence Halls to campus University recognized as a
research institution of the first order During 2009 and 2010 NYUs
faculty and staff increased by 25% (most rapid expansion) Increased
