Your client is the marketing manager

for the National Parks Service

(NPS). She wants to create a series

of collateral pieces that will be used

at tourism centers to lure potential

visitors. She hired you to produce a

one-sheet flyer that will be distributed

in print and online, a rack card

that can be placed in area hotels, a

postcard that will be given away to

park visitors, and a folio file that will

work on digital tablet devices.

This project incorporates the following skills:

o Creating an XML file using tagged frames and content

o Building a layout from imported XML content

o Controlling the structure of a layout to merge XML content

into tagged frames

o Placing linked content into alternate layouts

o Creating interactive overlays for digital folio files

o Creating alternate layouts for horizontal and vertical tablet

orientations

o Creating a digital folio file for tablet devices

Project MeetingWe want to create several pieces to promote tourism in the national parks. We already have a flyer layout that we like, but we want you to create other versions for different purposes:

– The flyer will be sent to tourism boards and agencies as a handout.

– The rack card will be placed in hotels near the park for potential visitors.

– The postcard will be given away as a souvenir to park visitors.

– The folio file will be made available on the park’s Web site for people who want to download it to their digital tablets.

This could be a huge project for us since there are more than 350 national parks, monuments, and other protected areas in the national park system.

InDesign offers several methods for repurpos-ing content into different layouts. I already created basic templates for the rack card and postcard; I want you to use XML to map the flyer content into those template layouts.

For the digital folios, you need to create two versions — horizontal and vertical. They don’t need to be exact matches, but they should have all of the same content. Keep in mind that this is a digital file. You can use interactivity to take advantage of the medium.

To complete this project, you will:

o Tag Frames for XML

o Review Document Structure

o Review XML Structure and Attributes

o Place Unstructured XML Content

o Update Linked XML Data

o Import Structured XML

o Create a File for Digital Publishing

o Use the Content Collector

o Manage Linked Object Options

o Create an Interactive Overlay

o Define Liquid Page Rules

o Create an Alternate Layout

o Create a Digital Folio

Stage 2 Creating Alternate Layouts

As you have already seen throughout this book, there is almost always more than one way to

accomplish a specific goal in InDesign. In the first stage, you used XML to feed content into several

existing templates. In this second stage, you will use another method to create versions that are

appropriate for digital tablet display.

When designing for mobile devices, one of the problems we face is the range of different

hardware — most of which have different physical sizes, even if that difference is slight. For example:

DevicePhysical size (diagonal) Pixel dimensions Pixels per inch (PPI)

Apple iPad with Retina display 9.7 2048 1536 264

Apple Mini 7.9 1024 768 163

Apple iPad2 9.7 1024 768 132

Google Nexus 77 1280 800 216

Samsung Galaxy 10.1;

Motorola Zoom 10.1 1280 800 150

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7;

Kindle Fire

7 1024 600 169

This list is hardly exhaustive; we only mention several of the most common devices.

But as you can see, there is no single consistent size or resolution from one device to

another. This issue is even further compounded when you consider the wide range

of smart phones that are available, each (it seems) with a different physical size and

resolution.Ideally, when you design for mobile devices, you would create separate files for each

device to take best advantage of the available screen capabilities. However, this would

mean dozens of iterations for individual devices, which is not always possible given the

immediate nature of some publishing projects.

At the very least, you should create different files for each of the common sizes —

which is why the application includes those four basic presets in the New Document

dialog box when you choose the Digital Publishing intent.

Update the IndesIgn applIcatIon FIles

In this stage of the project, you will use a number of tools to create a folio file for a

digital tablet device, which will contain two articles — one from the Bryce Canyon

layout, and one from a similar layout that we provided for the Golden Gate National

Recreation Area.

The Digital Publishing Suite (DPS), which drives folio creation and sharing, is

part of the InDesign toolset. However, the DPS Desktop Tools are not included in

the basic InDesign install process. If the update has not already been installed on your

computer, you need to do so before you can complete the rest of this project.

1. Make sure your computer is connected to a high-speed Internet connection.

2. In InDesign, open the Folio Builder panel (Window>Folio Builder).

It’s also important to

realize that new devices

are being introduced

all the time, and each

new phase of mobile-

communication

evolution will almost

certainly introduce more

variables into the picture

(literally).

Note:

Software updates are

relased periodically

throughout the release

cycle. The Adobe Creative

Cloud application should

automatically alert you to

their availability, but it’s

a good idea to manually

check every now and then.

Use the Content ColleCtor

The Content Collector/Content Placer toolset is a new option for sharing and linking content throughout a layout and across multiple layouts; you might think of it as copy-and-paste in hyperdrive. In this exercise, you are going to use these tools to repurpose the flyer content to a size suitable for an iPad.

1. Make flyer_bryce.indd the active file.

2. Choose the Content Collector tool.

Make sure you choose the Collector tool and not the Placer. The arrow in the Collector tool icon points down.

Content Collector tool

When you choose the Content Collector or

Content Placer tool, the Content Conveyor

automatically appears.

3. Click the three-column text frame on the page to select it.

When you select an object with the Content Collector, it is added to the Content Conveyor. The cursor icon shows how many objects are currently stored in the conveyor.

Clicking an item with the Content Collector

tool loads that item into the conveyor.

The cursor icon (enlarged here) shows

how many items are currently loaded in

the conveyor.

4. Draw a selection marquee that touches both frames in the top half of the page (the large image frame and the black text frame with the park name).

When you select more than one object at a time, those objects are added to the conveyor as a set. The cursor icon shows that two objects are now stored in the conveyor (the text frame and the set that includes the park name frame and the image). In the conveyor, the set thumbnail shows that the set contains two items.

Selecting multiple items at once creates a set in the conveyor.

The thumbnail shows the number of items in the set.

When the Tools panel is in two-column mode, the Content Placer tool appears to the right of the Content Collector tool (instead of nested under it).

Note:

If you click the Load Conveyor button on the right side of the panel, you can load the conveyor with all objects in the active selection, on a specific page, or on all pages. You can load these objects as individual items or as a single set.

Note:

Project GoalsEach project begins with a clear description of the overall concepts that are explained in the project; these goals closely match the different “stages” of the project workfl ow.

The Project MeetingEach project includes the client’s initial comments, which provide valuable information about the job. The Project Art Director, a vital part of any design workfl ow, also provides fundamental advice and production requirements.

Project ObjectivesEach Project Meeting includes a summary of the specifi c skills required to complete the project.

Step-By-Step ExercisesEvery stage of the workfl ow is broken into multiple hands-on, step-by-step exercises.

Use what you learned in this project to complete the following freeform exercise. Carefully read the art director and client comments, then create your own design to meet the needs of the project. Use the space below to sketch ideas; when finished, write a brief explanation of your reasoning behind your final design.

Portfolio Builder Project

These pieces are exactly what I had in mind. When I pitch the project to my superiors, I want to be able to show them all the same pieces for at least two different parks. That way the committee will see how different colors and pictures will affect the individual pieces but still have a consistent look and feel. I’ve sent you the text and images for Yosemite for this second set of files.

I’d also like to see one additional layout — redesigning our park map brochure to include this same content but also with a large map of the specific park. We already have the maps, but I’ll have to find the files for you; for now just leave space on the inside of the brochure.

The client is very pleased with the pieces you have designed to promote tourism in the national parks. Before she presents the project to her director for approval, she would like to have the same pieces for at least one other park.

To complete this project, you should:

o Create the flyer, rack card, postcard, and iPad layouts for Yosemite National Park. Use the images and text that are provided in the IDCC_PB_Project7.zip archive on the Student Files Web page.

o Create one additional layout for a letterfold brochure that will include the same content as the other pieces. The inside of the brochure should have only the park name and space for a map of the park. (If you completed Project 5: Ireland Travel Brochure, you can use the same basic 4×9″ template that you created in that project.)

Project Summary

472 Project 7: National Parks Info Pieces

Repurposing the same content in multiple different layouts is becoming increasingly common in the

design world. This project explored two different methods for repurposing content, both for multiple

print formats and for digital media. You used unstructured XML to drag specific types of content into a layout, and you used a

more structured approach to automatically place content into tagged frames of a different layout. By

maintaining a link to the XML file, you were able to automatically update the placed content to reflect

changes in the text. You also used the content sharing and alternate layout capabilities that are built into InDesign

to create different layouts from existing content. You also added interactive overlays to take better

advantage of the capabilities of digital media.

If the Show Master Page Overlay option is checked in the Control panel, the active master page appears in the

bottom-left corner of the active page.

Using the Off liquid page rule, resizing the page has no effect on placed objects.

When the rule is Off,

objects do not move or

resize when you resize

the page.

When Show Master

Page Overlay is active,

the master page size

and name are visible.

Choose a Liquid Page

Rule in this menu.

Using the Scale liquid page rule, content is scaled proportionally, adding or removing space around the page if the content

can’t be scaled in a specific direction.

When the Scale rule is

active, objects scale to

fit inside the adjusted

page size.

Using the Re-center liquid page rule, content is centered in the new page area; its size is not affected.

When the Re-center

rule is active, objects

remain centered to the

new page size; they

are not scaled.

2. Expand the Links panel as necessary so you can see most of the items’ names.

Although you only placed three items into the file, the Links panel lists six items. The software creates separate links for the objects and the objects’ content. Icons identify the type of content; the containing frames do not display icons.

Click here and drag to make the panel larger.

Click this line and drag to make the item name list wider.

The icons identify the type of linked content.

Linked items list the source document.

Because frames and contents are linked separately, you can update the linked content without affecting the object attributes, and vice versa:

• UpdateindividualitemsorcontentsbyselectingaspecificlistingintheLinkspanelandthenclickingtheUpdateLinksbutton.Thismethodallowsyoutoupdate the item without affecting the content (and vice versa).

• UpdateindividualcopiesbyclickingtheModifiedicononindividualitemsinthelayout (using the Selection tool). If you use this method, both the item and the item content will be updated.

3. Using the Selection tool, select the three-column text frame. Define its position as X: 36 px, Y: 720 px based on the top-left reference point.

When you placed the text frame, you simply clicked to place it. You did not click and drag to define the placed text frame’s size. You are making this change to better fit the available space in the iPad layout.

4. Click the bottom-right corner of the text frame and drag to the bottom-right margin.

These two items refer separately to the selected frame and the content inside the frame.

5. Click away from the text frame to deselect it.

6. In the Links panel, click to select only the three-column text frame item, then expand the Link Info section of the panel.

The Link Info area shows that the selected item is an object — in this case, the three-column text frame.

Click here to expand the Link Info section.

Choosing the Edit>Place and Link command has the same general effect as selecting an item with the Content Collector tool.

Note:

There is no dynamic link from the linked copies back to the original, or to other copies of the same object. If you want changes to reflect in all linked copies, you have to edit the original object. This is easily accom-plished by Control/right-clicking any of the copies — in the layout or in the Links panel — and choosing Go to Source in the contextual menu.

Note:

InDesign FoundationsAdditional functionality, related tools, and underlying graphic design concepts are included throughout the book.

Advice and WarningsWhere appropriate, sidebars provide shortcuts, warnings, or tips about the topic at hand.

Visual SummaryUsing an annotated version of the

fi nished project, you can quickly identify the skills used to complete

different aspects of the job.

Project ReviewAfter completing each project, you can complete these fi ll-in-the-blank and short-answer questions to test your under-standing of the concepts in the project.

Th e Against Th e Clock Portfolio Series teaches graphic design software tools and techniques entirely within the framework of real-world projects; we introduce and explain skills where they would naturally fall into a real project workfl ow.

Th e project-based approach in Th e Professional Portfolio Series allows you to get in depth with the software beginning in Project 1 — you don’t have to read several chapters of introductory material before you can start creating fi nished artwork.

Our approach also prevents “topic tedium” — in other words, we don’t require you to read pages and pages of information about text (for example); instead, we explain text tools and options as part of larger projects (in this case, beginning with placing text on a letterhead).

Clear, easy-to-read, step-by-step instructions walk you through every phase of each job, from creating a new fi le to saving the fi nished piece. Wherever logical, we also off er practical advice and tips about underlying concepts and graphic design practices that will benefi t you as you enter the job market.

Th e projects in this book refl ect a range of diff erent types of InDesign jobs, from creating a client letterhead to implementing a newsletter template to compiling a multi-chapter book. When you fi nish the eight projects in this book (and the accompanying Portfolio Builder exercises), you will have a substantial body of work that should impress any potential employer.

Th e eight InDesign projects are described briefl y here; more detail is provided in the full table of contents (beginning on Page viii).

Our goal in this book is to familiar ize you with the majority of the InDesign tool set, so you can be more productive and more marketable in your career as a graphic designer.

It is important to keep in mind that InDesign is an extremely versatile and powerful application. Th e sheer volume of available tools, panels, and features can seem intimidating when you fi rst look at the software interface. Most of these tools, however, are fairly simple to use with a bit of background information and a little practice.

Wherever necessary, we explain the underlying concepts and terms that are required for understanding the software. We’re confi dent that these projects provide the practice you need to be able to create sophisticated artwork by the end of the very fi rst project.

Getting Started PrereQuisites

Th e Professional Portfolio Series is based on the assumption that you have a basic understanding of how to use your computer. You should know how to use your mouse to point and click, as well as how to drag items around the screen. You should be able to resize and arrange win-dows on your desktop to maximize your available space. You should know how to access drop-down menus, and understand how check boxes and radio buttons work. It also doesn’t hurt to have a good understanding of how your operating system organizes fi les and folders, and how to navigate your way around them. If you’re familiar with these fundamental skills, then you know all that’s necessary to use the Portfolio Series.

resource Files

All of the fi les you need to complete the projects in this book — except, of course, the InDesign application fi les — are on the Student Files Web page at againsttheclock.com.See the inside back cover of this book for access information.

Each archive (ZIP) fi le is named according to the related project (e.g., IDCC_RF_Project1.zip). At the begin-ning of each project, you must download the archive fi le for that project and expand that archive to access the resource fi les that you need to complete the exercises. Detailed instructions for this process are included in the Interface chapter.

Files required for the related Portfolio Builder exercises at the end of each project are also available on the Student Files page; these archives are also named by project (e.g., IDCC_PB_Project1.zip).

atc Fonts

You must download and install the ATC fonts from the Student Files Web page to ensure that your exercises and projects will work as described in the book. Specifi c in-structions for installing fonts are provided in the documen-tation that came with your computer. You should replace older (pre-2013) ATC fonts with the ones on the Student Files Web page.

system reQuirements

Th e Professional Portfolio Series was designed to work on both Macintosh or Windows computers; where diff erences exist from one platform to another, we include specifi c instructions relative to each platform. One issue that remains diff erent from Macintosh to Windows is the use of diff erent modifi er keys (Control, Shift, etc.) to accomplish the same task. When we present key commands, we always follow the same Macintosh/Windows format — Macintosh keys are listed fi rst, then a slash, followed by the Windows key commands.
