Admissionsand EnrollmentReport
Spring 1994
University of Massachusetts AmherstOffice of Institutional Research (OIR)
INTRODUCTION: REPORTING ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT CONTENTS
Information for this report is drawn from the computer files maintained by theUndergraduate and Graduate Admissions Offices and Registrars. These are working files, built from the daily transactions that represent the campus’s official actions with respect tostudent admissions and enrollment. These “primary” data are captured, processed, andverified before they are put into table form for publication.
Admissions and enrollment activity is ongoing, but we take a “snapshot” of the dataas of the end of the fourteenth calendar day of each semester. It typically takes three or
* four days for all transactions “as of” this census date to be posted to the computer files.
We report enrollment activity at three levels. The school or college is the basiclevel of analysis. Within this, activity is shown by department or program, and withindepartment or program by discipline or major, where appropriate (thus, enrollment of ArtHistory majors is shown within the Art Department within the College of Humanities andFine Arts). Admissions activity is reported only at the school or college level, the level atwhich most undergraduates are admitted. Graduate admissions at the department orprogram level are reported in the Graduate School Factbook, published by the GraduateSchool.
A NOTE ABOUT ENROLLMENT DEFINITIONS
Headcount Student Majors are the actual count of individual students who haveselected a given major. Every student is assigned a “major”, even though it may be onlyan administrative classification (e.g., “non-degree” or “undeclared”).
Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Student Majors show how many headcount studentsthere would be if all students took a “full” credit load (15 credits for undergraduates; 9 forgraduate students, effective Spring 1992). We look at the credits generated by studentswithin each major— regardless of where the courses are offered — and then divide by 15 or9, as appropriate. Before Spring 1992, 12 credits were considered a full credit load forgraduate students.
FTE Instructed Students is our measure of instruction offered and consumed, regardless of the majors of the students taught. We look at the credits generated in thecourses offered by each discipline, and then calculate full-time equivalency. Unlike FTEStudent Majors, calculation of FTE Instructed Students depends on the level of the coursebeing taken and the level of the student taking the course. For undergraduate courses(those numbered 100-499) we always divide by 15, whether the student is undergraduateor graduate. Similarly, for graduate courses (those numbered 600-899) we always divideby 9 (prior to Spring 1992, the divisor was 12). For courses numbered 500-599, however,we look to see what kind of student is taking the course: if undergraduate, we divide by15; if graduate, we divide by 9.

Note 1: Majors’ are defined as students with any declared major within the department or program offering a course. All other students, including those without a declared major, are defined as “non-majors.’Note 2: Effective Spring 1992, the University changed its lull-time equivalency (FTE) for graduate students from 12 to 9 credits. Spring 1994 FTEs are comparable to semesters prior to Spring 1992 by
multiplying Spring 1994 graduate FTEs by .75.Note 3: Numbers are not directly comparable to previous years due to reorganization of academic units and re-assignment of some departments and programs among Schools and Colieges.
