Heart to Heart Dear Moms, Welcome back to our school. My hope is that you are all trusting in God on a deeper level during these pandemic times. We are all wanting things to return to normal. However none of us knows when that will be. As I have been praying, it occurs to me our whole world has been turned upside down but we can make this a time where we draw closer to God and our family. Heart to Heart

A Word to Fathers ~ By Bill Stephens

Clean as Dirt

In 2 Samuel chapter 6 is the story of David wanting to bring the stolen Ark back to Jerusalem. The Philistines, who had stolen the Ark had become sick with hemorrhoids (of all things) and thought the cause could be the Ark. They took cows that had just calved and harnessed them to a cart carrying the Ark. The scripture says that the cows went in the direction of Israel “lowing on the way.”

David and his men went to retrieve the Ark, a man named Uzzah placed his hand on the Ark to keep it from tipping over. God killed him and David was angry and confused.

Here are some take away points from this story that we can all learn from.

1. David and his men forgot the rules. Moses spent a lot of time teaching the Israelites how to care for the Ark. The Levites were responsible for moving the Ark. Hands were not to touch the Ark, poles through rings were used to carry the Ark.

It seems that while Saul was king the law of Moses was not strictly adhered to. We are free from the Law but not free from the Law of Christ—to love God with our whole heart and love our neighbor as our self.

2. God does not need our help. This is important to know. Many times we want to take matters into our own

hands. We think we can push things along by cutting corners, cheating on our taxes, prying into the business of others. Our focus is to be obedient to the Law of Christ (see above).

3. Uzzah thought he was cleaner than dirt. The dirt was fine. God created the dirt and the dirt does what it was

made to do—feed plants, decompose garbage, be a home for all kinds of critters. Uzzah was a sinner acting in rebellion against God’s Law. He had no right to think he could be that familiar with the Ark of the Cove-nant. We are redeemed through the blood of Christ not through any of our own actions. In the Westminster Shorter Catechism poises the question, “what is the chief end of man? To glorify God and enjoy Him forev-er.” To fulfill that purpose will make you as clean as dirt.

Western Christian PSP families,

Our field trips have always been one of the cornerstones of our program. However, due to County, State and Federal government guidelines regarding public gatherings, many places have postponed their field trips until further notice. There are a few organizations that are possibilities, but personnel are on vacation and will return our calls within the next few weeks. We will constantly be checking organizations and busi-nesses to see when they may open up. In the meantime, we will work on other alternative “field trips” that we can offer our families. Please keep on the lookout for any email updates we may send out regarding possible field trip opportunities. In addition, any field trips that we are able to organize will be in the monthly newsletters. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to getting back on the field trip track as soon as possible!

Elementary Preschool-6th grade Coronavirus has made it so that we cannot offer pre-school until we are allowed back on CBC’s campus. However, we have organized Backyard Tuesday and Thursday School until we can return to the CBC campus. Our vision with this plan is that parents and kids can start making friends and connections in a safe environment. Their teachers will provide a devotional and a science or history lesson.

We encourage parents to stay and help or just to socialize! All four homes for Tuesday school are located within 2 miles of each other and have large backyards to allow for kids to be socially distanced. We are still looking for homes in Ran-cho or Upland for Thursday school! If you have signed up and pre-paid for Tuesday school, we will be emailing the ad-dresses to you directly. Each class will be 10-12 students and will run for one hour and a half long.

Junior High School History 8 In this course we will be reading both non-fiction and historical fiction, pieces of literature to learn about the events that led to the birth of our nation, the War of Independence, the writing of our Constitution, the Civil War, Reconstruction, American Innovation, the Great Depression, both World Wars, the Civil Rights Movement, and contemporary America. We will learn about various historical figures and how they helped shape God's history. There will be daily homework assignments, quizzes, tests, hands on lapbook activities, and in class reenactments.

Pre-Algebra (Grades 7 - 8): This is a one year course. This course will lay the foundation for the types of higher math that students will learn in high school and beyond. Course covers a wide range of math concepts starting from integers to expressions, equations and inequalities, number theory, rational numbers, percents, geometry, statistics and proba-bility and graphing. Students taking this course will be well prepared for taking Algebra 1. According to Bob Jones Pre-Algebra is a 8th grade curriculum. Students receive a classroom presentation each week by a teacher for every subject that they are taking. The parent’s role at home is to interact with their student regarding assignments and assure completion and submission of weekly work. Parents must grade daily math although the teacher will grade tests and offer progress reports. Teachers will pro-vide grades for subjects other than math. High School Speech Full year course - 10 credits (Virtual for first semester and then will reassess) Thursday 1:00-2:00 PM This course includes discussions of the communication process, audience analysis, and public speaking guidelines. This is a full year course which involves topic choice, research, organization, and effective com-munication. There will be a supplemental unit on using technology during presentations and a special section on how to give a testimony or lead devotions for a group. Bible 9 Full year course - 10 credits (Virtual for first semester and then will reassess) Tuesday 8:00-9:00 AM This course aims at avoiding two opposite errors. The first is a worship that is fervent but ignorant of the Scriptures. The second is a worship that is knowledgeable in the Scriptures but lacking in true love for God. The solution is to guide students into thoughtful worship that adores God (both head and heart). God de-signed humans in His image and intended that they use their intellect, guided by affections that are submit-ted to Him (Proverbs 1:7). Therefore, this course prepares students to do theology, or study the Bible (head). Secondly, the course prepares students to be responsible disciples of Christ who live for the Lord and pursue Christlikeness (heart). English 9 Full year course - 10 credits (Virtual for first semester and then will reassess) Tuesday 11:40-12:40 PM BJU Fundamentals of Literature introduces students to literary criticism by teaching the foundational ele-ments of conflict, character, theme, point of view, structure and tone. Students are encouraged to read and analyze literature in light of a Christian worldview. Short writing assignments are integrated throughout the year. Students will read 6 classic literature novels: A Parcel of Patterns, Sign of the Four, Pride and Preju-dice the Annotated Version, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Screwtape Letters and Romeo and Juliet. English 10 Full year course - 10 credits (Virtual for first semester and then will reassess) Thursday 8:00-9:00 AM BJU Elements of Literature broadens students’ understanding of literature by focusing on advanced literary concepts. Students will learn the method and the importance of literary analysis by studying pieces from several genres and inter-preting them in light of biblical truth. World History & Geography BJU Press' World History, 4th edition, recounts the story of mankind from creation to the present. Students examine an-cient civilizations through the Greeks to the Roman Empire, including the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Refor-mation, upon which modern history is founded. God’s providence and Bible integration are given prominence as the stu-dents are taught to view the world through a Christian lens.

Text available through BJU Press: World History Student Text (4th ed.) - 515742 - $63.89. You will also need the World History Tests (4th ed.) - 278721 - $17.57.

When in-person classes resume, an estimate of a copy fee will be given for all handouts.

Basic Art supplies for projects and timelines will be needed. Watercolor paper, cardstock, watercolor paints and brushes, colored pencils, markers and glue stick. About 7 manilla folders will also be needed. Student-grade materials are fine.

Basic photography skills are taught through assignments, lectures, video and projects. Various photographic styles are explored including, Documentary, Portraiture, Commercial, Landscape and Nature. Art photography assignments include, but are not limited to, photo transfers, sun printing, photo collage and storybook. This class is not about the quality of a camera or fancy gadgets. I work to train the eye, so a point and shoot camera is sufficient (no iPhones). I have been teaching this course for over 17 years, and graduated with a degree in Fine Art Photography from Cal State Long Beach.

VAPA (Squilt) Music Appreciation Class Course Description Welcome to an exciting new year! I am Letitia Ugwueke and this will be my first year teaching at Western Christian. I have been homeschooling for 2 years and this will be my kid’s 3rd year in the program. I have a 9th grader and a 5th grader. I studied Music at Azusa Pacific University and earned my BA and MA in Vocal Performance. CVCC Back-to-School Plan

The administration has been talking and praying about our options for this fall. Ultimately we are hoping that the circumstances involving churches and schools will be back to normal soon, but realize that the rules and guidelines given by our leaders can ultimately keep us from being on the CVCC campus come Septem-ber. Because we cannot predict the future, we have come up with four options for Friday School (K-8) and three options for the For Credit classes. Friday School (K-8th):

A. We conduct classes at CVCC with groups of 10 students who will rotate to three different activities within their grade level. This allows 30 students per grade level to participate. We will need extra help to cover all of the groups as well as sanitizing the classrooms before every rotation. There will be a zoom op-tion as well for those still in quarantine. B. We split each grade level into two groups. Each group will attend Friday school every other week. On

the off week there will be a park day activity. C. Everyone is on zoom. D. We meet as usual- either at the beginning of school on 9/11 or when able. For Credit Classes: A. We conduct classes at CVCC with class sizes no larger than 10 students. B. We conduct classes outside as weather permits. C. We have all classes on zoom. We will not know which option is available for us until September 1st. Please be patient and join us in pray-

ing for wisdom, clarity and of course the healing of our country.

Friday School Class Descriptions

Kindergarten: Christine Arnold 16 weeks This year our kinder class will be learning all about the world around them...from the seasonal changes God has made in our world, to plant and animal life and even a little bit about our solar system... this year is going to truly be out of this world! We will be learning through our daily rug time (i.e. Calendar, prayer, etc), songs, Bible, art, story time, and so much more!!! I am both blessed to have this opportunity to teach your kids and honored that you would trust me and my ability to teach them this year. I have my B.A. in Liberal Studies and had previously worked as an ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) therapist for almost 3 years. I took a sabbatical from work when my husband and I started our family and I have homeschooled our 2 boys for the past 4 years. I have also been a substitute teacher at Cornerstone Christian and recently became a sub at Western Chris-tian PSP for Tuesday and Friday schools. I am looking forward to meeting all of your wonderful kiddos!

1st Grade: Christy Miller- 16 weeks / Credentialed Teacher This year we will be learning about a different artist each week by reading about them and completing a project in a similar style that they would have done. (Similar to the Meet the Masters program) We will be using different methods and styles with- painting, pastels, watercolor, crayons, glue, markers and anything else fun I can find. We will also be having sharing time, PE activities and snack time on the playground. Looking forward to meeting your kids!

2nd Grade: Sheri Ryan 16 weeks Sheri has a B.A. in Liberal Studies and a M.A. in Education from Biola University, and taught 2nd grade for 6 years, before choosing to be a stay-at-home mom. She has homeschooled her children for 7 years. This year second graders will enjoy wild and whacky science experiments, fun art projects and lots of group activities to enhance and supplement the homeschool experience. 2nd graders will learn basic art terminology, explore color, patterns and textures through the use of various mediums. We

will also be doing seasonal crafts to encourage creativity.

3rd Grade: Maureen Bosanko 16 weeks Our class will be learning about geography and culture. As we learn we will be working on a geography lapbook that the stu-dents will bring home at the end of the year. Each week we will learn about a new country or continent. We read a literature book from the country, sample food from the country, play a game from the country and add information to the lap-book. Students will be required to bring their own supplies to class, a supply list will be given at the beginning of the year. I have a B.A. in Bible, a teaching credential in rehabilitative services, and a B.A. & M.A. in Communicative Disorders (Speech Language Pathologist).

Tips for Preparing Your Student for College

Having a high school diploma is important but it doesn’t guarantee that you will be able to get

into college. It can be a difficult process these days. Here are 12 tips/suggestions for students

considering college entrance:

1. Plan ahead. When you know what college you want to go to, go to their website to make

sure that you are taking the courses that they recommend.

2. Align your course titles with those of Western Christian so that the colleges will recog-

nize what you have been doing.

3. Check the Western Christian website to see what courses CSU and UC want you to take.

4. Check this website for more information about how to get into college as a homeschooler:

5. Be involved in the community so that you can talk about your experiences and the ways

that you have made a difference to people. Colleges want smart and academic students,

but they also want people who can change the world for the better.

6. Find out what you do well, do it, and learn how to write about it. Colleges are looking for

you to explain to them why you are “head and shoulders better” than the others who are

also applying to college.

7. Take the tests. Take the SAT. Take the ACT. Take the SAT II subject tests. Find objec-

tive ways to prove that you are who you say you are. Test taking is a learned skill. Prac-

tice, practice, practice.

8. Take AP courses and their corresponding tests.

9. Take some community college courses or enroll in the part-time program at Western

Christian. This is another way to show that you are as good a student as your mother

thinks you are.

10. Make sure that you have all the courses that Western Christian requires for a diploma.

11. Most importantly, pray for God to go before you in this whole process.

12. Remember that it is hard to get into many college programs today, so you should have

several options. Don’t put all your hopes and dreams into one program unless you have

figured out several ways to get there.

CVCC Back-to-School Plan

The administration has been talking and praying about our options for this fall. Ultimately we are hoping that the circumstances involving churches and schools will be back to normal soon, but realize that the rules and guidelines given by our leaders can ultimately keep us from being on the CVCC campus come September. Because we cannot predict the future, we have come up with four options for Friday School (K-8) and three options for the For Credit classes.

Friday School (K-8th):

A. We conduct classes at CVCC with groups of 10 students who will rotate to three different activities within their grade level. This allows 30 students per grade level to participate. We will need extra help to cover all of the groups as well as sanitizing the classrooms before eve-ry rotation. There will be a zoom option as well for those still in quarantine.

B. We split each grade level into two groups. Each group will attend Friday school every oth-

er week. On the off week there will be a park day activity.

C. Everyone is on zoom.

D. We meet as usual- either at the beginning of school on 9/11 or when able. For Credit Classes:

A. We conduct classes at CVCC with class sizes no larger than 10 students.

B. We conduct classes outside as weather permits.

C. We have all classes on zoom.

We will not know which option is available for us until September 1st. Please be patient and

join us in praying for wisdom, clarity and of course the healing of our country.

Because this language is uniquely different from English, students will need to practice and study concepts at home to reinforce the lesson. Dialogues and other conversational techniques will be used. Testing and projects will also be assigned. This year’s course will fulfill language credits for High School.

High School Photography - Grades 9th - 12th This fun and creative one-year course incorporates both digital and art photography. The class is interactive, with many class sessions working together as a class to explore the techniques being taught. This is a one year course, and each class is 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. Basic photography skills are taught through bi-weekly assignments, lectures, video and projects. Various photographic styles are explored including, Documentary, Portraiture, Commercial, Landscape and Nature. Photographically driven art pieces are also a part of the class. Students will learn the art of photo Transfers, Cyanotypes, Inkodye T-Shirt printing, photo collage, and make a photo lamp.

I have been teaching this course for over 16 years and it is always a favorite among the students, and is sure to improve their photographic skills.

Speech: Learning to Speak Effectively and with Confidence (high school 9-12) SPRING SEMESTER ONLY This course is designed to help students learn how to communicate with confidence in front of others. Skills include topic selection, research, organization, and presentation tips. We will also be discussing how important our words are as followers of Christ, and we will be taking a look at what God's Word says on this topic. Speeches will be informa-tive, persuasive, devotional, impromptu, and more. Students will also learn how to share their testimony. This will be a safe, friendly atmosphere, which will allow students to learn and grow through a class, which is often an uncomforta-ble one for most. US American History Grades 11-12 American History is so fascinating, and throughout this class you will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for what makes this nation great, and what sets it apart from the rest of the world. From Native American society through modern America, students will address both the workings of God and the shortcomings of humanity in the for-mation and progression of America. Students will gain an appreciation of the providence of God in the development of a country based on Biblical principles and events that have shaped America’s history. Students discuss geography, politics, economics, and current events to formulate reasoned Christian viewpoints on issues of contemporary society. The class will be enhanced through historically based DVD’s, mini debates and speeches, dramatic reading as well as games to help you prepare for quizzes. The hope is that history will become so much more than just words in a text-book. Physical Science This is a full year high school credit class. 8th graders can take the class for high school science credit as well. Topics covered will include: matter in its 3 states, kinetic and potential energy, foundations of chemistry, Newton’s Laws of Motion, forces and simple machines, sound and light waves, magnetism, and electricity. This is a foundational science course that prepares your student for upper level science. It includes laboratory experiments that reinforce topics. We will be doing a science project and presentation in the second semester. High School Biology Biology is most exciting (and most truthful) when it is taught and learned in the context of our awesome Creator. His creation certainly reflects the majesty, wisdom, and power of God. Unfortunately, secular science is often taught in such a way as to become a stumbling block to the development of our faith. Science can instead be a stepping-stone to faith – the evidence for design is everywhere, especially in Biology! This course is taught with a Creation perspective. We will use the Apologia book, “Exploring Creation with Biology”. Topics include the five kingdoms of life, the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics, ecology, evolution (as a theory), as well as plant, animal, and human biology. Each week we will have a one-hour lecture/discussion period (generally using PowerPoint slides), fol-lowed by a one-hour lab. High School Chemistry This course provides a rigorous foundation in chemistry in preparation for college-level chemistry. Topics covered in-clude significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, ki-netics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium. The lab period will alternate between Chemistry labs and a math tutoring time. Students often have difficultly under-standing the math that goes with each chapter, so we will focus on that every other week. We will still do at least one lab with each chapter. We will spend approximately two weeks on each chapter. Students will be given pages to read each day at home, and questions to answer. Short quizzes will be given for each chapter online. American Government/Economics Class Description—Thursday Instructor: Ken Greek Class time: Thursdays, 5—6:30 p.m. at Chino Valley Community Church Course Fee: This is an upper division, year-long course. During the first semester, in American Government we will focus on the founding principles that formed America. Students will learn why The United States was created and how it stands as beacon of religious, civil, and economic freedom in the world. We will read from original source documents such as the Declaration of Independence, Federalist Papers, and the Constitution to learn how the three branches of American government were designed to control and limit power to protect freedom. These resources will supplement weekly reading from two books: Matthew Spaulding’s We Still Hold These Truths, and Eric Metaxis’ If You Can Keep It. Class discussion will explore how our founding principles have informed historical events and are being de-bated in today’s political culture. This is a full year course. Will cover skills required to proceed into High School Algebra, and students completing it will be WELL PREPARED for Algebra 1. **I get asked often, which math should my Jr Higher be doing?” If your student does a decent job (80% average) on basic mathematics, especially multiplication & division, and maybe ok on fractions, he/she should take Pre-Algebra. The current “fashionable” trend in education these days (public and private) is that students should take Algebra I in 8th grade, which would mean Pre-Algebra in 7th. This works for some, and is (in my opinion) a GRAVE mistake for a lot of others! According to Bob Jones, this is an 8th grade cur-riculum. This class is available, as well, to High School students who require additional work on the basics! Call me if you need to talk about any of this! Starts right out working with equations, covering properties of addition, subtrac-tion, multiplication and division. Will move into decimals, integers, multiples, factors, fractions, equations and ine-qualities, ratio, proportion, percentages, geometry and graphing. Emphasis through entire text is on equations and solving them, using all the mathematical concepts introduced. These basic skills would be prerequisite for an Algebra course. United States History: United States History is a general history course in which students will examine the people, places, events, inventions, and societal changes shaping American history from the pre-Columbian era to the present day. Students will be using Exploring America from Notgrass Company. It is a full-year high school course that presents US history from a Christian perspective.

This course consists of two primary texts. Students will read narrative-based chapters that cover some of America's most important events, issues, and people. Review questions for each lesson, quizzes and tests will be accessed online through Google classroom. As a Volunteer Chaplain at Century Regional Correctional Facility (CRDF) in Lynwood, she leads the Wom-en’s Jail Spanish Ministry. She has served The Lord in this ministry for 22+years. The Lord has blessed her with a Spanish Women’s Home Bible Study Group called “Tesoros del Cielo” (Treasures from Heaven) where she uses her gifts of teaching and encouragement. Some recommendations/requirements for our zoom meetings for NewLife classes;

1. I need to and we all want to see your face. Please don’t put up a picture of you or some other designa-tion. Let us see you—even if it’s too early in the morning. We are all up early together.

2. Please post your own name—not a nickname or email name.

3. Please use the mute button when you are trying to listen, but don’t forget that it is a discussion type class. I want to hear your questions and also your thoughts about the readings and the topics we are discussing.

Recommendations from the CDC for in person meetings at New Life

1. Please stay home if you are sick or if you have been exposed to covid-19.

2. Please wear a mask when changing classrooms or walking to and from your car or if you are unable to safely social distance.

3. Commonly used tables and chairs will be disinfected between classes. This will mean we need to shorten class periods to one hour to allow time to clean the area. Class times will be 8:00-9:00, 9:15-10:15, 10:30-11:30, and 11:45 to 12:45.

4. Students will be required to sit 6 feet or more apart in the classroom.

5. Zoom sessions will be going on at the same time, so if you are unable to attend in person, you can still sit
