We are, again, proud to bring this year’s
Administrative Management Division
Annual Conference to the Broyhill Inn and
Conference Center in beautiful Boone,
North Carolina. Located above
Appalachian State University in the heart
of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, the
Broyhill offers a breathtaking 25 mile
view of this beautiful mountain range.
This year’s conference offers up to (9)
Professional Development Hours (PDH’s)
from both informative and timely topics.
These topics range from issues like
personnel management to technical storm
water and planning issues. The speakers
selected for these sessions are some of the
most renowned in the region. (Please refer
to “Conference at a Glance”.)
Of course, this conference is not all work
and no play! The annual Captain’s Choice
Golf tournament on Wednesday at the
scenic Roan Valley Golf Club will
challenge even the best golfer. Thursday
evening offers opportunities for fellowship
and fun. The evening begins with a
hospitality hour, a great venue for rekindling
old acquaintances and making new ones.
Afterwards, dinner will be buffet style
prepared by over 200 years of culinary
experience. Following dinner, entertainment
will be provided by, Laditude, a local favorite,
playing tunes from Motown, Top 40, Beach
and Country.
Bring your golf clubs, bring your dancing
shoes and bring your thinking caps, this
conference has something for

CONFERENCE PROGRAMS
What in the Management is Going On? A wheel needs spokes for optimum strength, performance and safety. Today’s public works leaders need to assess their “management spokes” to keep their organizational wheels in great shape. This session will explore the tools needed in today’s economic and business climate to strategically move your public works organization forward.
Sssshhh…Can’t You Hear the Whistle Blowing?
The Federal Railroad Administration’s final ruling on “Use of Locomotive Horns at Grade Crossing” will take effect on June 24, 2005. This presentation will discuss the provisions of the final ruling and how it could impact the quality of life in your city or town.
Strategic Planning in Program Management
What are the benefits of having a strategic and/or business plan as it relates to program management? This session will present strategic and business plans being used in a variety of communities, how they were developed, and how they are being implemented and measured. A facilitated multi-party strategic planning program that is creating positive results for the NCDOT, the FHA and others will, also, be discussed.
The Dell Experience State and local officials discuss the extraordinary recruitment efforts to bring the Dell project to the triad region. This session will include state and local perspectives on the challenges, impacts and benefits of the largest economic development project in North Carolina history. PDH CREDIT = 1 HOUR

Those were the Days – Generations at Work Slacker! Disrespectful! Immature! Clueless! Sound familiar? Are these things you’ve thought about your co-workers? The generation gap goes far beyond the typical clashes with your parents, it has transcended the boundary of home and is alive and well in the workplace. This presentation will describe and explore generational differences and how to properly manage across generational boundaries.

Stormwater Phase II Model Ordinance & BMP Manual Update
Officials with DENR/DWQ and their consultants will provide updates on the status of two major regulation initiatives: Draft Phase II Stormwater Model Ordinance and the Best Management Practices (BMP) Manual. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session. This session will allow stakeholders an opportunity to address questions and concerns regarding these new documents.

Please indicate and order any extra meal tickets you may need at the time of pre-registration. We need to make an accurate estimate of the number anticipated for each meal function in order to provide the hotel with a guarantee.
If you plan to register at the site, please pay by check instead of cash as the staff at the registration desk will not have change.

A golf outing will be held at the 2005 NC-APWA Administrative Management Division Conference in Mountain City, TN at Roan Valley. Pease Associates, Inc. will sponsor this activity. One of the most scenic golf courses in the south, it was featured in “Golf Digest”. The eighteen hole course has expansive flat holes near Roan Creek and then gives way to very hilly and steep terrain as you climb from the old creek bottom.
GOLF ACTIVITIES – ROAN VALLEY, MOUNTAIN CITY, TN SPONSOR –PEASE ASSOCIATES, INC.
This part of the program is a fun activity, which does not require being a “serious” golfer to enjoy great fellowship. If you have not participated in previous golf outings at our meetings, we hope that you will this year!
