I received a number of positive notes on my column last weekend thanking me for speaking about the issue with Bishop Bransfield and having a conver-sation about Bishop Barren’s book on the suffering Church. Now that I’ve been with you for six full years now, I pray that you’ve come to know me as a person who will always be truthful with you, and who will readi-ly admit my own imperfections and will tell you when I’ve make a mistake or have done something wrong. In order to bring true healing in the Church, friends, we must adopt this kind of attitude. If healing will ever come from the tremendous suffering that so many have endured, we must step out of the darkness and into the light of truth. That means, of course, that we become transparent on the issues of abuse and acts of indiscre-tion. When attempts are made to gloss over things and put them under the carpet, it’s never one instance of this kind of behavior. It’s not a question of if things will resurface, but when. And when they do, more attempts must be made in order to keep things hidden. It be-comes a vicious circle, and it gets uglier and uglier. Then, when it is finally exposed, the levels of ugliness must be peeled away, and that’s what hurts. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. If we, as Christ’s Church, cannot consecrate ourselves in the truth, then we are not acting in the mind and heart of the Savior. I know that I’m not perfect, friends, and if I were to do something wrong, I would be the first to admit it. The truth can sometimes be difficult, but it’s far better than the lies and deception of the evil one. When we stand in the light of truth, Christ stands with us. We need to remember this in our own spiritual lives, and the Church must remember this as the instrument of salvation upon the earth. The Church is the vision of Jesus Christ Himself, friends, and I can assure you that Christ did not envision a Church that wasn’t truthful.

I had very nice messages from Frs. Giuseppe and Luciano this past week. Fr. Giuseppe is settling in at the nunciature in Beirut, Lebanon. He is serving un-der the direction of Archbishop Joseph Spiteri. He sent me some pictures, and the landscape is breathtaking. Fr. Luciano will begin his assignment in Trinidad and Tobago next week, on August 6th. We pray for these fine priests as they continue their important ministry in the name of the Holy Father.

Please continue to keep the music director search in your prayers. As you read this, we’ll have interviewed one candidate, with another scheduled for this weekend or early next week. We have a well-represented screening committee, and I’m grateful to them for their willingness to help in this important role.

Our love and prayers are extended to Carol Rickey and her family on the death of her daughter, Patricia Ann Rickey. May she know God ’s love and peace in the glory of His kingdom,

Peace,

Fr. Michael

W E L C O M E T O T H E P A R I S H O F S T . B E R N A R D ! Dear Friends,

You must have all been praying hard! For your prayers, I am very grateful. I am happy to report that the Landmarks Com-mission has given a conditional go-ahead on the exterior restoration of the stained glass windows. We will need to repaint the mullions on the window we restored last sum-mer (the dark brown borders that

connect the panes of glass together) to a color that matches the stonework, which is easily accomplished. We’re working out the final details on the attachment of the exterior coverings, and after this is completed, we should receive the paperwork we need to move forward. There’s a few items to work out yet with re-gard to the roofing. The commission isn’t a fan of the synthetic slate material, as they feel it doesn’t closely represent the clay tile we currently have, and would change the building’s historical appearance too much. They did not close the door, however, in considering other types of material. My original hope was to use the synthetic slate on the section of roof at the north end of the building by the parking lot to get a feel for it, with the hope that we could use this material for the remaining lower portions of the roof and the main roof. The worst case scenario would be for them to approve copper roofing, which would match the lower roofs above the side aisles. It wouldn’t be similar in color, however. As copper ages, it fades in color, so we’d have a brand new shiny section of roof and these old-er sections along the remaining lower portions of roof which are green in color. Copper also causes stain damage to the stonework, as can be seen from those green sections we’ve got going on the bell tower (and we weren’t allowed to remove). Thankfully, this isn’t at all an urgent situation, so we have time to continue to dialogue. These are steps forward, however, and I’m grateful to each of you for your prayers for these projects! We’ve also commenced on the landscaping. As I write this, plantings are going in front of the recto-ry, and the crew continues to work around the front of the rectory and the church. A big difference from be-fore! It really changes the look of the buildings, and for the better! Plantings will continue to go in until the crew is finished. Feel free to take a walk around the buildings and see the new plantings ... they’re quite beautiful. We also tackled another needed project that had to be moved up the list a bit. The rectory gar-age doors were starting to malfunction. Brittle wiring was beginning to fray, causing several doors to ran-domly raise and lower at various times throughout the day. I witnessed it a few times, and it was quite the sight to behold. The doors themselves were begin-ning to rust, and several of the rollers were beginning to crack and break. This past week, we installed new fiberglass garage doors and openers on all five park-ing stalls. All of the hardware and tracks are also brand new, along with all new wiring. These should last for many years to come, and no more random raising and lowering! That was another big project off the to-do list. We have accomplished a lot this sum-mer.

Gospel Meditation The cake is frosted, the guests have arrived, and the gifts are piled high. One by one, the packages are opened, and one by one, the child reaches for another. Who among us hasn't seen a child who appears crestfallen when the gifts run out? Even the abundance isn't quite enough. Today's Gospel tackles a key question in the spiritual life - grateful or greedy? "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest." We all recognize the need to be practical. Rais-ing a family, there's need to save for all sorts of things be-yond normal day-to-day costs - medical bills, family vaca-tions, private school, rainy day funds, retirement. Jesus doesn't critique the rich man for simply having an abundant harvest. It's his mentality. Does the rich man sell off the extra to make the needed repairs to the back fence or to invest in some additional livestock to grow the business? Perhaps donate some of the excess to the poor? No. "You have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!" The man wants to hoard and indulge with no concern for others., Jesus doesn't condemn prudent saving or owning neces-sary items. He calls us to purify our attitudes. "Guard against all greed... one's life does not consist of posses-sions." We are called to be good stewards. This means being practical. It also means remaining open to God's invitation with our resources. Are we tithing to our parish? Do we give alms to the poor? Does our weekly entertain-ment far outstrip what we offer to others? Life is not about "stor[ing] up treasure for [our]selves." The more we grow in gratitude and generosity, the more we become "rich in what matters to God."

Exchange Student The Aspect Foundation, an international ex-change student non-profit organization, is trying to find a host family for one of their ex-change students from Ecuador who will be coming to study in the United States for the 2019-2020 school year. Maria (https://

services.aspectfoundation.org/st/index.php/st_search/profile/UY9-EIL-002-F ) is very active in her Catholic Church community at home in Ecuador, and so they’re looking to match Maria with a host family within the Catho-lic community in the wider Madison area. Please give this opportunity prayerful consideration! For more information,
