ADLER MUSEUM OF MEDICINE
ANNUAL REPORT 2013 GENERAL PROGRESS OUR GRADUATES 1924-2012
A notable event this year was the publication and launch of Our Graduates 1924-2012 which was researched and produced by Rochelle Keene, Curator of the Adler Museum. The launch took place at the annual Faculty Honours Celebration on 4 December 2013. The publication contains a detailed chronology of events relating to the history of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Medical School and a list of graduates which includes all under- and postgraduate students in all disciplines and in all specialties taught by the Faculty from 1919.
The summary of graduates from 1925 to 2012 at the end of the publication has enabled the Faculty to gauge in numbers the contribution it has made over the years in terms of the training of health professionals.
Since 1919, when Senate and Council of the fledgling University approved a degree programme for medical education in
Johannesburg to the present, the Faculty has produced world-class graduates in every field and its achievements have been enormous, with graduates prominent in many walks of life both locally and internationally: testament to the superb quality of the training our graduates receive in this Faculty.
CONFRONTING HIV/AIDS
This permanent exhibition was completed in 2013 and provides a visually and intellectually stimulating account of the HIV/AIDS epidemic by introducing the disease, listing its clinical stages, looking at the history and spread of the disease, particularly in South Africa, and at treatment.
The text was prepared by Professor Maria Papathanasopoulos, Co-Director: HIV Pathogenesis Research Laboratory and Genotyping Laboratory, Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology, School of Pathology, Wits; Rochelle Keene, Curator of the Adler Museum, Wits and Dr Simonne Horwitz, Department of History, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. A publication accompanies the exhibition.
No official opening took place but the exhibition was extensively publicised for World Aids Day, 1 December 2013, and received many visitors. VISITORS
The Museum continues to receive local and international visitors.
Important visitors to the museum and to the Faculty who specifically visited the museum included: Professor Duncan Saunders (MBBCh 1975), a generalist epidemiologist from the School of Public Health, University of Alberta (January); Mr Martin and Dalya Mintz (Mr Mintz is the eldest grandson of Dr Cyril and Dr Esther Adler, founders of the Adler Museum of Medicine); Professor Thea de Wet, Professor of Anthropology and Development Studies and Director of the Centre for Anthropological

COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT
Capturing and documenting objects onto the Museum’s database continues at a very good pace.
The Museum had to vacate storage space at the NHLS in Braamfontein. As its storeroom is full to capacity, this part of the collection has had to be stored offsite on private premises for which a monthly rental fee is paid.
The mould problem in the main storeroom was tackled with the removal and cleaning of all affected items, cleaning of the entire storeroom and the installation of extractor fans. This was followed up with a second survey by the NIOH Occupational Hygiene Section. The spore count had dropped, air supply and flow has improved and dehumidifiers and thermohygrographs will be purchased in 2014 to further control and monitor air quality.
ARCHIVES
The Museum’s archives are frequently used by students, staff and researchers. Some research in 2013 included:
Author Liz Ison for archival material on Dr Nathan Kanin for her book ‘From There to Here – A Family’s Journey’ (April); Mark Hackney, postgraduate MA student, Department of Historical Studies, University of Johannesburg, who is doing research on the history of nuclear energy. The Museum’s archives and Bulletin articles were made available for him (May); Professor Neil Crouch, Head: Ethnobotany Unit, Deputy Director: Research, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) researching archival information on GW Reynolds, a famous taxonomist. The Museum’s optometry shop was donated to the Museum by HT Reynolds (GW Reynolds’ father); Lindelihle S Cebekhulu, a final year BSc Mechanical Engineering student, Wits, doing research on the history of bathing and equipment used for disabled patients in the past in order to design lifting mechanisms for such patients (June); Dr Anthony and Rosemary Gear, doing research for their book on Professor James Gear. The Museum holds comprehensive archives on Professor James Gear; Researcher Carolien Greyling for information on the history of nursing 1960-2010 with particular focus on 1994-2010. This research was done on behalf of the Wits School of Public Health (October); Mr Gordon Metz (son of Professor Jack Metz, ex-director of the SAIMR and nephew of Dr Mary Gordon) requested material from the Museum’s archive on Dr Mary Gordon. He is assisting Dr Zippy Rubin at Ben Gurion University in Israel, who is doing research on female medical doctors in Palestine/Israel 1900-1948 (December).
In addition, the museum was consulted by Mr Simphiwe Yako, archivist, NIOH/NHLS, who sought advice on Collections Management and the drafting of a policy document from the Curator and staff (August). Anthea Jeffery, author of The history of Blood Transfusion in South Africa donated her book to the Adler Museum. She used the Museum’s archives extensively during her research for the book in 2012 and 2013.
LIBRARY
The library continues to be used by staff, students and researchers, and is used extensively for general meetings and journal club meetings. Donated books which filled gaps in the library collection were accepted and accessioned into the library.
