RYAN ANDERSON

Mr. Anderson’s practice is based in Lethbridge, Alberta. He obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta and law degree from the University of Calgary. He returned to his rural roots after law school and has been living in his home town of Magrath and practicing in the Lethbridge area. His practice consists of agricultural transactions and finance, wills and estates, and family law disputes, including work as a mediator.

Mr. Anderson has served in many areas including the Chair of a non-profit serving individuals with developmental disabilities, Lethbridge Bar Association, Economic Development, and Scouts Canada. He has taught courses for the Lethbridge College (Business Law), Lethbridge Public Legal Education (Wills and Estates), and the Legal Education Society of Alberta (Family Law Issues). Mr. Anderson joined the Board in 2018.

ROB ARMSTRONG, QC

Mr. Armstrong was born and raised in Edmonton and currently resides in Calgary. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts with distinction from the University of Alberta in 1995. In 1998, he graduated with his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Calgary and articled with the Court of Queen’s Bench and the Court of Appeal of Alberta. Mr. Armstrong practiced with one of Calgary’s preeminent boutique litigation firms from 2000 – 2015 where his practice focused on employment litigation, administrative and privacy law, professional negligence defence work, and commercial litigation. During his time in private practice, Mr. Armstrong appeared before numerous administrative tribunals, all levels of court in Alberta, and the Supreme Court of Canada.

In 2015, Mr. Armstrong joined the Calgary Police Service as in-house privacy counsel where he advises the organization on legal issues relating to access to information and privacy matters. From 2010 – 2014, Mr. Armstrong taught civil procedure at the University of Calgary Law School where he was also an instructor and team lead for the Law School’s Trial Advocacy course. Mr. Armstrong also instructs students in the civil litigation portion of the Bar Admission course and has served as an Examiner for the Legal Education Society of Alberta. In June 2017, Mr. Armstrong joined the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Exchange Advisory Board as a director. Mr. Armstrong joined the Board in 2015 and currently serves as President.

DR. JOHN S.J. BRADLEY, MD FRCPC

Dr. Bradley is an Edmonton-based Nephrologist and Internal Medicine specialist. He is an Associate Clinical Professor with the University of Alberta’s Department of Medicine, previous Facility Chief for the Grey Nuns Hospital Department of Medicine and currently is the President of the Alberta Medical Association’s Section of Nephrology.

Dr. Bradley recently completed his second three-year term as a Hearing Tribunal member with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

GRACE BRITTAIN, RN

Ms. Brittain is a Medicine Hat-based Registered Nurse with an extensive background in health care management and education. She has over 15 years of experience in administrative justice and administrative tribunal work. Ms. Brittain is a Hearing Chair with the Appeals Commission for Alberta Worker’s Compensation. She is currently appointed to the Second Level Long Term Disability Appeal Board (CHR) and has served on several other boards and tribunals including conduct and disciplinary tribunals under the Health Professions Act (Alberta Health) and on the College and Association of Registered Nurses Professional Conduct Committee.

GLEN BUICK, BA

Mr. Buick was born and raised in Saskatchewan, and attended Queen’s University where he received his Bachelor of Arts. He has served in a variety of roles with both the provincial and federal governments throughout his career, including Assistant Deputy Minister, Alberta Culture, and as the Canadian Ambassador to Chile (1978-82).

Additionally, Mr. Buick sat as Ministerial representative on several boards in the arts community in Alberta. Since his retirement, he has chiefly devoted himself to family and volunteer activities, including the Boards of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, and the CKUA Radio Foundation. Mr. Buick is a recipient of an Alberta Centennial Medal and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Mr. Buick is a former lay Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta.

ARMAN CHAK

Mr. Chak received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta. He also received his LLM and Diploma in Justice Administration from Osgoode Hall Law School. He is currently on the National Council for the Canadian Bar Association as well as the National Constitutional and Human Rights Law Section.

Mr. Chak is a human rights advocate who represents many individuals and organizations who have faced human rights violations in the area of employment and public services.

Mr. Chak is an active member of the legal community (pro bono, public speaking, and mentoring young lawyers), the arts community and his ethnic community.

Mr. Chak is an avid jurist and continues to improve his education within the law. He takes part in legal seminars, workshops and has spoken at several legal conferences. Mr. Chak joined the Board in 2015.

DONALD R. CRANSTON, QC

Donald Cranston is a former Bencher and past-President of the Law Society of Alberta. Mr. Cranston was called to the Bar in 1979, and has practiced in Edmonton since that time. He is a graduate of the Commerce Faculty (Public Policy) and the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba. He also completed the Harvard Law School Intensive Mediation Course.

Mr. Cranston is a partner and joint leader of the commercial litigation group at Bennett Jones LLP. His practice focuses on civil litigation, professional liability and conduct matters, and administrative and public law. He also acts as a mediator and arbitrator.

Mr. Cranston has been actively involved in the legal profession and community throughout his career. He has chaired a number of boards including LESA, the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, the University of Alberta Faculty of Law Alumni Association, the Child and Adolescent Services Association and the CBA National Committee on Judges Salaries and Pensions. He has taught various courses for the Bar Admission program and LESA, including Ethics and the Legal Profession, and was a member of the Pro Bono Law Alberta Board.

JODI EDMUNDS, B.COMM.

Ms. Edmunds resides in St. Albert and is currently the Manager of Labour Relations at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). She has previously worked as a Labour Relations Officer with the United Nurses of Alberta. In that role, she acted as a labour relations advisor at arbitration hearings, and represented members’ interests in investigation and professional association hearings. She has also acted as a union nominee on three person arbitration boards. Ms. Edmunds has completed the Foundation of Administrative Justice’s Administrative Law and Decision Writing courses and has taken several arbitration and mediation courses.

CORIE FLETT

Ms. Flett was called to the bar in 2011 in Fort McMurray where she continues to practice. Ms. Flett is a member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation. She is a Partner at Cooper & Company, with a primary focus in family law. Ms. Flett has gained extensive board and governance knowledge over the years from her involvement in the legal profession and community, including the CBA Alberta Branch Executive Council, the CBA National subcommittee on judicial issues, the Law Society of Alberta Credentials and Education Committee, Pro Bono Law Alberta, the Northern Lights Health Foundation and the Fort McMurray Airport Authority. Ms. Flett joined the Board in 2018.

LEIGHTON GREY, QC

Mr. Grey is a lawyer in Cold Lake and is a member in three Canadian law societies: Alberta (1993), Saskatchewan (2004) and British Columbia (2015). He is a founder and senior partner with Grey Munday Wowk LLP where he maintains an extensive litigation practice. Between 2001 and 2015, Mr. Grey has acted for over 200 Indian Residential School claimants and was an active participant in their ADR and IAP hearings. He has also appeared before administrative tribunals such as the Workers’ Compensation Board and the Metis Settlements Appeals Tribunal.

Mr. Grey has completed courses in ADR from the University of Windsor, and is currently completing a Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution & Reconciliation at Abilene Christian University.

ELIZABETH HAK

Ms. Hak has a B.Sc. in Genetic Toxicology and a diploma in Journalism. She worked at the RCMP Forensic Laboratory in Edmonton as an Alcohol Expert for 12 years. She has extensive writing and decision-making experience. Since 2011, she has served on a number of boards and councils including the Alberta Transportation Safety Board, the AISH/IES Appeal Panel and the Licence and Community Standards Appeal Board in Calgary. She was a public member with the Life Insurance Council of Alberta and the Alberta College of Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologists.

Ms. Hak is currently a member of the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada and is a public member with the General Insurance Council of Alberta. She joined the Board as a public representative in 2018.

WILLIAM HENDSBEE

Mr. Hendsbee was born and raised in southern Ontario and received his Honors Bachelor of Arts (History) from the University of Western Ontario. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 1993 and was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1994 as well as the Northwest Territories Bar in 1997. Mr. Hendsbee is a partner at Cummings Andrews Mackay LLP, where he has practiced exclusively in plaintiff personal injury law for more than two decades.

Mr. Hendsbee has served as President of the Edmonton Bar Association and as President of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (ACTLA). He has volunteered to chair and speak at seminars for both the Legal Education Society of Alberta and ACTLA.

Mr. Hendsbee is active in his community, serving as a Board Member of Spinal Cord Injury Alberta and he chaired a golf tournament in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation for 10 years. He has also been involved in the sports community, serving as Commissioner of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference since 2006; while also having served as the President of the Alberta Climbing Association and as a Board Member of both Climbing Canada and the Paralympic Sports Association. Mr. Hendsbee joined the Board in 2018.

CARSTEN JENSEN, QC

Carsten is one of the founding partners of JSS Barristers. Carsten’s practice focuses exclusively on civil litigation, with an emphasis on corporate and commercial litigation including commercial class actions, oil and gas disputes, shareholder disputes, multi-party litigation and arbitrations. Carsten has represented governments, airlines, major and independent oil and gas firms, and individuals, and he does professional negligence defence work.

From 1998 to 2000, Carsten acted as senior legal officer and team leader at the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Carsten Jensen is a former Bencher and past-President of the Law Society of Alberta. In 2013, Carsten became a fellow of the London based Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

CAL JOHNSON, QC

Mr. Johnson was born and raised in Calgary and attended the University of Alberta where he graduated with his Bachelor of Laws. He is currently counsel with Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP where he has been for over 40 years. Mr. Johnson has chaired and served on the Board of Directors of Vertigo Theatre, the United Way, the Springbank Community Planning Association, and The Doorway (Moving People off the Street). Mr. Johnson has been named in the Best Lawyers in Canada in the areas of Natural Resources Law annually since 2008, Project Finance Law annually since 2012, and Banking & Finance Law annually since 2013. He has chaired the South Alberta Real Estate Subsection of the CBA and was Chair, South Alberta, for the Joint Legislative Review Committee of Law Society of Alberta and Canadian Bar Association. Mr. Johnson also taught law at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University, has instructed in the Bar Admission Course and currently instructs in the Professional Responsibility section of CPLED. Mr. Johnson joined the Board in 2013.

DR. ALAN KENNEDY, BSC, MSC, PHD

Dr. Kennedy is a Cochrane-based environmental scientist. He worked in the oil and gas industry for over 35 years prior to retirement. He has been involved in hearings of the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board for 10 years and has been a panel member on over 46 hearings under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, the Water Act, and the Climate Change and Emissions Management Act. Dr. Kennedy has extensive experience writing decision reports. Dr. Kennedy previously served as President of the Alberta Society of the Professional Biologists. Dr. Kennedy was also appointed to the Federal Environmental Studies Research Board, which makes decisions on the studies required to address environmental issues related to oil and gas development in Canada.

Dr. Kennedy is currently a faculty member at the University of Calgary, Sustainable Energy Development Program, Haskayne School of Business. He has recently been appointed Chair, Advisory Committee, Mount Royal University, Institute for Environmental Sustainability.

EDITH KLOBERDANZ

Ms. Kloberdanz is a Calgary-based registered arbitrator, parenting coordinator, family mediator and social worker. She is the sole proprietor of Kloberdanz & Associates Mediation where she provides family mediation, coaching, arbitration and parenting coordinator services. She sits as a mediator for the Provincial Court Civil Mediation Roster, the Alberta Dispute Resolution Services Roster and the Alberta Police Complaint Mediation Roster.

Ms. Kloberdanz sits as an arbitrator for the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan and as an appeal panel member of the Alberta Ministry of Human Services for Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, and the Income and Employment Supports. Ms. Kloberdanz has received extensive mediation, parenting coordinator and arbitration training throughout her career.

LINDA LONG, QC

Ms. Long was born in Lethbridge, the granddaughter of Alberta homesteaders. She served in the Canadian Armed Forces for over a decade until attending the University of Alberta and graduating with a law degree in 1985. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar the following year. Ms. Long has worked in the family law area for 29 years, founding a family law firm in 2004 which has evolved to a small firm partnership. She provides services primarily in collaborative family law and family mediation, as well as acting as an arbitrator of family law disputes. She continues to be an active mentor to junior lawyers.

Ms. Long is a Registered Collaborative Family Lawyer, a Registered Family Mediator and an Arbitrator, having completed the Certificate program in Arbitration through the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society. She has served on the Boards of the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society and the Alberta Family Mediation Society, has chaired the ADR section of the Northern Alberta Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and has over four decades serving in a volunteer capacity with many other organizations. Most recently, she served as Co-Chair of the Association of Collaborative Professionals (Edmonton). Ms. Long joined the Board in 2018.

JIM LUTZ

Mr. Lutz was born and raised in Calgary. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University and his law degree from the University of Wales. Mr. Lutz works at Dartnell Lutz, where he practices criminal law and represents individuals in front of disciplinary boards. He is a Past President of the Calgary Bar Association and has lectured at the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Calgary Bar Association, the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association and the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association. Mr. Lutz joined the Board in 2018.

SANDRA MAH

Ms. Mah is a Calgary-based lawyer and was called to the Alberta bar in 1995. She is an Associate Counsel at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP where she practices trust and tax law. She has been active with the Law Society of Alberta and has served as a member of the Conduct Committee, the Equality, Equity and Diversity Committee and the Re-engagement and Retention Task Force. In addition, Ms. Mah was the Chair of Phase 1 of the Law Society’s Justicia Project. She also serves as a director for Wood’s Homes and as a governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation.

LINDA MAJ

Ms. Maj is a St. Albert-based lawyer and was called to the Alberta bar in 1994. She has been employed by the Federal Department of Justice since 2003, where she acts as lead counsel on litigation files involving various government departments. Ms. Maj handles matters before the Court of Queen’s Bench, Court of Appeal, Federal Court and administrative tribunals. She has also undertaken assignments as Team Leader and Deputy Director. Ms. Maj was previously a practitioner for 10 years with Davis LLP in Edmonton, regularly instructs at the bar course, and has served on the Law Society of Alberta’s Credentials and Education Committee.

MICHAEL MANNAS, MA, FCGA, FCPA, CDIR

Mr. Mannas is a Calgary-based Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Chartered Director (CDir). He is the President and Director of Golden Prairie Energy Ltd., a private oil and gas company. He currently sits as a Chair of the Discipline Roster Tribunal of the Certified General Accountants’ Association of Alberta (CGAAA) where he hears allegations of unprofessional conduct relating to decertification of members and student appeals. He was previously a member of the Member Services Advisory and Education Advisory Committees with CGAAA.

He is a Fellow of the Certified General Accountants of Canada (FCGA) and Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (FCPA).

DANIEL (DAN) J. MCDONALD, QC, FCIARB

Mr. McDonald is a Calgary-based lawyer and was called to the Alberta bar in 1978. He is a partner at Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP where he practices commercial and general litigation, arbitration and mediation. He has appeared before courts in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario, the Federal Court of Canada and other tribunals, including various provincial Securities Commissions, the Competition Tribunal, Public Utilities Board, Surface Rights Board, Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board, and professional disciplinary tribunals.

Mr. McDonald is a member of the ADR Institute of Alberta and the ADR Institute of Canada, as well as the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Committee and the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society. He currently serves as the Director of the Western Canada Commercial Arbitration Society. He is a Fellow with both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the American College of Trial Lawyers.

DOUG MCGILLIVRAY, QC

Mr. McGillivray is a Calgary-based lawyer and was called to the Alberta bar in 1976. He is a partner at Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP where he conducts a varied litigation practice, focusing on commercial, construction, franchise, insurance and risk management, and securities litigation. Mr. McGillivray has been very active with the Law Society of Alberta having served as President (2005–2006), President Elect (2004–2005) and a Bencher (1999–2006). Mr. McGillivray has also served as Chair of the Finance Committee, Conduct Committee, and Civil Practice Advisory Committee, and has been Vice Chair of the Insurance Committee, Credentials and Education Committee, and Professional Responsibility Committee. He has been involved with the Law Reform Institute and the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, and has served on a number of committees for the Government of Alberta.

Mr. McGillivray has received training from the Institute of Conflict Management LLC for mediation certification. He is eligible to become a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Arbitrators in the area of international arbitration.

BARBARA MCKINLEY

Barbara McKinley is the owner of The Worker’s Advocate, where she has worked as an advocate and appeals representative for over 20 years. She has extensive experience interpreting and applying legislation and policy in order to participate in appeal hearings, prepare written arguments and facilitate communication between individuals, unions and the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB). She served two years as a member on the Alberta Federation of Labour Committee on WCB and Health and Safety, the Technical Working Group on Occupational Health and Safety Code, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Disability Appeals Panel, and as Chair for the Alberta Labour Coalition on Worker’s Compensation. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics and French and a Bachelor of Music degree, both from the University of Alberta. Ms. McKinley joined the Board as a public representative in 2018.

BUD MELNYK

Mr. Melnyk was born and raised in Edmonton where he obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1985. After completing his law degree in 1990 at the University of Alberta, Mr. Melnyk began practicing law in Red Deer, and has been an active member of the Bar since 1991. He is currently a partner with the law firm of Warren Sinclair LLP.

In 2017, Mr. Melnyk was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch). In 2010, he was awarded the Prism Award for outstanding commitment to pro bono legal services in central Alberta. He is a current member of the Family Law Rules Advisory Committee. In addition, Mr. Melnyk has been a chair and presenter at Legal Education Society of Alberta conferences dealing with family law.

Mr. Melnyk has also been an active member of the community where he has been the Run Director for the CIBC Run for the Cure, Canadian Cancer Society since 2016. He is also a past board member with the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Red Deer and an ongoing volunteer with the Festival of Trees (fundraiser for the Red Deer Regional

Health Foundation). Mr. Melnyk joined the Board in 2018.

MARTHA MILLER, BA

Ms. Miller is an Edmonton-based HR professional. Early in her career, Ms. Miller was a Labour Relations Officer with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). Previous appointments include serving as Director, HR with the Alberta Cancer Board (ACB). As Director, Ms. Miller was involved extensively in collective bargaining and negotiated three collective agreements. Prior to her retirement in 2011, she was the Manager of HR at Alberta Health Services.

Ms. Miller currently sits on the Assessment Review Board for the City of Edmonton where she chairs hearings, writes decisions and participates as a panel member.

Ms. Miller has completed certificates in Tribunal Administrative Justice as Tribunal Member and Administrator with the Foundation of Administrative Justice. She also served as the Director for the Foundation.

WALTER PAVLIC, QC

Mr. Pavlic was born and raised in Edmonton and received both his Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta. He practises at MLT Aikins LLP in Edmonton with a focus on labour and employment law and has made numerous appearances before the Court of Appeal, the Court of Queen’s Bench, administrative tribunals and arbitrators. Mr. Pavlic is a frequent speaker and presenter of papers on labour and employment topics at several provincial, national and international conferences. He is a Board Member of the Legal Education Society of Alberta and has actively participated in numerous legal and community organizations. He is also a past President of the Canadian Bar Association Alberta Branch. Mr. Pavlic previously served on the Board from 2013 – 2015 and became a Board member again in 2017.

CORINNE PETERSEN

Ms. Petersen was born in Calgary, raised in Lethbridge and educated at the Universities of Lethbridge and Alberta where she graduated first with a Bachelor of Science followed by a Bachelor of Laws in 1987. She has supplemented her interest in alternative dispute resolution with many courses including the Harvard Law School Intensive Mediation Course.

Ms. Petersen articled with a small firm in Lethbridge then returned to Edmonton where she practiced with a large international firm, a mid-sized litigation boutique and, since 2017, has pursued a litigation practice with Kingsgate Legal focusing on professional liability and specialty liability claims.

Community service and involvement in the legal profession have been integral to Ms. Petersen’s career. She has contributed to the profession as a Bencher from 2017-2018, as a member of a number of Law Society committees, and as a speaker at the Legal Education Society of Alberta, CBA, and other professional seminars. She has also served on not for profit boards including Terra Centre, an organization that provides education, parenting, and housing supports for teen parents. Ms. Petersen re-joined the Board in 2019.

STACY PETRIUK

Ms. Petriuk was born and raised in Calgary. She received her BA from Queen’s University in 1991, her LLB from the University of Calgary in 1996, and her LLM from the University of Cambridge in 2001. Ms. Petriuk is a partner at JSS Barristers, a civil litigation boutique, where she was the Managing Partner from 2015 to 2017. Her practice focuses exclusively in civil litigation, with an emphasis on professional negligence defence work and commercial litigation. Ms. Petriuk is active in her community and has been a member of the board of directors of the Calgary Arts Development Authority since 2014. She has presented at numerous seminars in Calgary and Edmonton on diverse civil litigation topics including e-trials, e-discovery, drafting pleadings and the Rules of Court. Ms. Petriuk joined the Board in 2018.

ROBERT PHILP

Mr. Philp joined the Board in 2018 after a career that included an administrative and labour law practice. As part of his administrative law practice, he provided counsel to First Nation and Metis communities. Mr. Philp has significant adjudication background experience, including labour and human rights tribunals, and professional discipline proceedings. His litigation experience has seen him appear before all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Philp was a Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta for nearly 10 years and most recently served as the Chief Commissioner of the Alberta Human Rights Commission. He is a frequent lecturer at the University of Alberta Law School and is very active as a mentor to law students and young lawyers.

LORI PLATER

Ms. Plater is a Calgary-based lawyer. She was called to the British Columbia bar in 1989 and the Alberta bar in 1997. She was a Crown Prosecutor in both jurisdictions and has been both a Provincial and Federal prosecutor. She was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2008 and presides over trials and hearings, pursuant to provincial, municipal, and Criminal Code legislation. She also serves as a member of the Parole Board of Canada, conducting hearings and writing decisions.

KATHLEEN RYAN, QC

Ms. Ryan was born and raised in Edmonton. She attended the University of Alberta where she received her Bachelor of Laws in 1991. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1992. She is a litigation partner at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP in Edmonton. Ms. Ryan practices primarily in consumer and injury litigation, professional negligence, employment litigation, and commercial litigation. She has been recognized twice by Best Lawyers in Canada (Corporate and Commercial Litigation) and she has twice been recognized by Lexpert as a Leading Practitioner in Canada (Personal Injury Litigation). Ms. Ryan was named one of Canada’ Most Powerful Women: Top 100 for 2013. She is a board member of the St. Thomas More Lawyers’ Guild (and a past President), the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association (and a past President), the Society for Safe and Caring Schools & Communities (and a past Vice President), and the St. Andrew’s Seniors Centre. She is the current President of the Edmonton Ringette Club. Ms. Ryan co-chaired the Creating Safe Spaces Anti-Bullying breakfast from 2010 through 2013. Ms. Ryan has been a presenter at numerous legal seminars and a guest lecturer at the University of Alberta in Professional Responsibility (Ethics in Negotiations). She has frequently taught or evaluated the CPLED course in Negotiations from 2001 and 2017. Ms. Ryan was elected to the Board in the 2011, 2014 and 2017 Board Elections.

DARLENE W. SCOTT, QC

Ms. Scott was born and raised in Edmonton. She studied economics in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta from 1978-1981 and obtained her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 1984. She is a partner in the Edmonton office of Dentons Canada LLP and practices in the areas of commercial law, real estate and lending. Darlene has been an instructor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and Faculty of Extension, at Legal Education Society of Alberta Bar Admission Courses and as a panelist and chair at numerous Legal Education Society of Alberta conferences. From 2009 – 2014, she acted as a director and Secretary of Little Warriors, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of childhood sexual abuse. She is currently the Chair of the Alberta Law Foundation and serves as Chair of the Conduct Committee and the Policy Committee and has served on the Executive Committee since 2015. Ms. Scott became a Board member in 2014 and has served on numerous Law Society committees since becoming a member.

DEANNA STEBLYK

Ms. Steblyk was called to the Alberta Bar in 1999, and she has practiced law in Calgary ever since. She received her law degree from the University of Alberta in 1998 (With Distinction), after completion of her undergraduate degree in English (First Class Honours) at the University of Calgary.

After ten years in private practice as a civil litigator, Ms. Steblyk accepted a position as litigation counsel for the Alberta Securities Commission, where she prosecuted breaches of the Alberta Securities Act before the Commission and the Provincial Court of Alberta (Criminal Division). In 2017 she moved to the Office of the Vice-Chairs of the Alberta Securities Commission, where she assists Commission adjudicators with legal research, preparation of oral and written decisions, and policy matters.

Ms. Steblyk has always had a strong interest in public service, and has worked in a wide variety of volunteer capacities. She is the current Chair of the Legal Aid Alberta Board of Directors, a director and Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Calgary Humane Society, past President of the Association of Women Lawyers, past Chair of the CBA Alberta’s Civil Litigation subsection (south), and a regular guest instructor at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. Since 2003, she has served on several Law Society committees, including Conduct, Finance, Credentials and Education, and the 100th Anniversary Celebration Steering Committee.

Ms. Steblyk joined the Board in 2018.

KENT TESKEY, QC

Mr. Teskey was born and raised in Edmonton and received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta. Mr. Teskey practices exclusively in the area of criminal defence law and has significant experience defending against regulatory and professional discipline allegations.

Outside the practice of law, Mr. Teskey serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocacy, support and housing for Albertans suffering from schizophrenia.

Mr. Teskey joined the Board in 2015 and currently serves as the President-Elect.

DR. NICK TYWONIUK, PHD, P.ENG., CHARTERED MEDIATOR, CHARTERED ARBITRATOR

Dr. Tywoniuk is a semi-retired civil engineer from Edmonton. Prior to his retirement, he worked for 31 years with the Government of Canada in numerous locations across the country and, in senior executive positions where he was responsible for grievance processes. He currently operates his own consulting business that provides environmental and civil engineering, mediation, and arbitration services.

Dr. Tywoniuk has completed the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society arbitration and mediation programs, and is a chartered mediator and a chartered arbitrator. He has also completed the ‘tribunal member’ training offered by the Foundation of Administrative Justice. In the past 10 years, Dr. Tywoniuk has presided over 400 mediations and 30 arbitrations involving engineering, construction, business, labour, lands and resource use, contracts, insurance and oil and gas disputes. He is a mediator and an arbitrator for the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board, the Public Lands Appeal Board, Service Alberta appeals tribunals, the Beverage Container Management Board Appeal Committee and the Agreement on Internal Trade BID Protest Panel (Alberta).

MARGARET UNSWORTH, QC

Ms. Unsworth was born and raised in Edmonton where she received her Bachelor of Science (Psychology) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta.

She is the Director of Constitutional Law with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. As a legal advisor to the Government of Alberta for the past 30 years, her practice covers a wide range of constitutional and human rights questions from division of powers issues to Charter rights and constitutional conventions. Ms. Unsworth is an experienced litigator who has represented the Attorney General of Alberta at all levels of Alberta Courts and has appeared numerous times before the Supreme Court of Canada, most recently as lead counsel for Alberta on the Senate Reference.

Ms. Unsworth has served on the Executive of the Civil Litigation and Constitutional Law sections of the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch) and continues to speak at CBA sections. In addition, she is actively involved with the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, assisting in the mooting program and speaking on an ad hoc basis.

Ms. Unsworth has received numerous awards for work on team projects within Alberta, on intergovernmental projects, like the incorporation of Banff, and has been recognized for her dedication to the future of the profession through her work as mentor and coach. Ms. Unsworth joined the Board in 2016.

CORA VOYAGEUR

Cora Voyageur is a Sociologist and a Professor at the University of Calgary. She teaches a variety of criminology courses and courses about Indigenous life in Canada and around the world. She is also the faculty leader for the Indigenous Women in Leadership program at the Banff Centre. Her academic research is focused within Indigenous communities and their lived experience, including Indigenous women entrepreneurs in Alberta and Indigenous women who serve on Boards of Directors. Cora has participated on numerous boards and committees within Edmonton and Calgary. She earned her Master of Education in Educational Foundations and her Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of Alberta. Ms. Voyageur joined the Board as a public representative in 2018.

KEN WARREN, QC

Mr. Warren was called to the Bar in 1986. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Calgary. He also completed the Harvard Mediation Workshop in 2000.

Mr. Warren is a Partner at Gowling WLG, where he practises in the area of commercial dispute resolution with a focus on shareholder disputes, professional liability defence, executive employment law, and mediation. He is recognized by Best Lawyers and Lexpert in Corporate Commercial Litigation and by Best Lawyers in ADR. Mr. Warren served as the managing partner of Gowling WLG’s Calgary office for nine years, stepping down in 2016. He has practised with one firm for his entire career.

He is an active member of his community and profession. He served on the Board of the Calgary Urban Project Society from 2010 – 2017, served on numerous Law Society of Alberta committees continuously since 1993 and has regularly lectured in the CPLED program.

Mr. Warren joined the Law Society of Alberta Board in 2018.

LOUISE WASYLENKO, CMA

Ms. Wasylenko received her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1980, and her Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation in 1989. Ms. Wasylenko has extensive experience working in legal and regulatory environments, both professionally and as a board member, advising and educating on the need for commitment to professional standards and codes of conduct, adjudication and strategies for remediation.

She has played senior management roles at Bennett Jones, KPMG, and several major health care organizations and municipalities, responsible for the analysis and management of financial processes, risk management and compliance activities. Ms. Wasylenko is semi-retired and contributes her financial expertise to several non-profit organizations. Ms. Wasylenko joined the Board as a public representative in 2015 and was re-appointed in 2018.

SCHUYLER (SKY) WENSEL, QC

Mr. Wensel is an Edmonton-based lawyer, called to the Alberta bar in 1978. He is a partner at Witten LLP where he practices construction law, bankruptcy and insolvency, real estate, civil litigation and ADR. He is a mediator and arbitrator, conducting arbitrations in commercial and construction disputes. He was involved extensively in the Alberta New Home Warranty Program from 1994 to 2009, serving as General Counsel, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer as well as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Wensel is currently a committee member for Service Alberta, engaged in a review of revisions to the Condominium Property Act.

NATHAN WHITLING

Mr. Whitling is a criminal appellate lawyer who has practiced law in Edmonton since 2000. Upon his graduation from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1997, he was awarded the Horace Harvey Gold Medal in Law, and then obtained his LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School in 1998. In 1999 – 2000 , Mr. Whitling served as a law clerk to the Hon. Mr. Justice John Major of the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Whitling has appeared before the Courts of Appeal of Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Manitoba, as well as the Federal Court of Appeal, and has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on more than 10 occasions. He has been awarded several awards and honours, including the National Pro Bono Distinguished Service Award (2008), The Harradence Prize, and the University of Alberta Alumni Award of Excellence (2011). Mr. Whitling joined the Board in 2018.

CATHERINE WORKUN, QC

Ms. Workun is an Edmonton-based lawyer and was called to the Alberta bar in 1996. She is Senior Counsel at TELUS where she practices primarily in the area of technology law and commercial transactions related to technology. She has served as a member of the Professional Responsibility Committee, the Credentials and Education Committee, and the Corporate Commercial Advisory Committee of the Law Society of Alberta.

Additional board memberships have included the Community Services Advisory Board and Family and Community Support Services Committee for the City of Edmonton, where she served as Chair on the Family and Community Support Services Committee for three years. Ms. Workun was also recently appointed to the Board of Directors for Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC).

ANTHONY G. YOUNG

Mr. Young was born and raised in Calgary and attended the University of Calgary where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor. Subsequently, he attended Osgoode Hall Law School at York University where he obtained his Master of Laws. Mr. Young currently works as a family lawyer at Sugimoto & Company. Tony Young is a former Bencher and past-President of the Law Society of Alberta, past Chair of Alberta Law Foundation and has served in many capacities at the Canadian Bar Association including the editorial committee of Law Matters, South Section Coordinator, Chair of each of the Civil Litigation Section, the Technology Section and the Young Lawyers Section.

He continues to serve as Co-Convenor of the Reforming Family Justice System Initiative, President of Aspire (the University of Calgary Family Law Incubator), and Director of the Alberta Law Libraries. Mr. Young has contributed to the profession through organizations such as the University of Calgary, the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education and the Legal Education Society of Alberta.

IKE ZACHAROPOULOS

Mr. Zacharopoulos is a Calgary-based senior executive with a background in municipal government and finance. His previous work experience has been focused on real estate and tax issues, in his roles as a director with Canadian Pacific Railway and Altus Group. He has extensive experience serving on quasi-judicial boards and currently sits on the Alberta Municipal Government Board where he chairs hearings and authors decisions on behalf of the panels. Previous appointments include serving as a Hearing Chair for the Appeals Commission for Alberta Workers’ Compensation (WCB) and as a Presiding Officer for the Assessment Review Board (ARB) for The City of Calgary.

Mr. Zacharopoulos has also served as President to the Canadian Property Tax Association and National (US) Rail Property Tax Association, and is in the process of completing the Foundation of Administrative Justice Certificate Program.
