A Word from Adele...

A lesson from the letters of Mother Adele that day was to be si-lent so as to better listen to God. The experience provided much time to reflect on that lesson and attempt to listen in the silence.

At the conclusion of the day, we had another opportunity for shar-ing. Upon listening to the other participants, I recognized a common con-nection between many of us: Although we each strived daily to work for justice, we each in some way struggled with the prospect of failing in that endeavor by not having, giving, doing, or being enough to meet the de-mands of the lives of others, and sometimes our own lives. Yet in sharing our common connection, we became aware that none of us are alone, and that my struggles are similar if not that same as those of other young adults.

Like the sounds of birds chirping, I know the shared experiences of those like us who participated that day are ubiquitous, but it took the stillness and silence of A Walk With Adele to realize that again. Knowing that I am not alone in my struggles with social justice and injustice was enough that day to move me forward to do more.

Reflecting on A Walk With Adele

“O my God, you are my Joy!”

Sometimes you need a little stillness -- a little silence -- to move forward in working for social justice. Thanks to the invitation of a good friend, I found both recently at A Walk With Adele.

For those not familiar with the experience, A Walk With Adele, a project of the Adele Social Justice Project, provides a few hours of retreat and reflection for young adults, with the letters of Mother Adele guiding participants along. Seven young adults shared in the experience with me, together reflecting on our daily interactions with so-cial justice, and all too often, injustice.

Although stillness and silence are major components of the experience, I found that the times for sharing provided some of the more insightful moments.

After some brief prayer to begin the day, we sat in silence for a few minutes. When asked to reflect on reasons why we each decided to attend, I shared that it had been some time since I allowed myself to stop and to listen to the sounds of birds chirping, which filled the air that day. That reason did not come to mind until that very moment because I had yet to realize I was not allowing myself to stop and to listen; I was not allowing myself time for silence.

Created in 2005, the Adele Social Justice Project engages young adults with contemporary re-

sources that connect the Marianist Charism to social justice. Through our programming, we at-

tempt to articulate, explore, and reflect on our relationship with the world through our Marianist

lens of justice. Currently, we offer a half-day reflection program called, "A Walk with Adele" and

we are in the process of developing domestic and international immersions.

The Adele Social Justice Project (ASJP) is named in honor of Adèle de Batz de Tranquelleon,

foundress of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate. At 14 years of age, Adèle formed an association

of young women committed to spiritual growth and care for the poor -- within ten years her as-

sociation grew to over 200 young women. Her leadership, spirituality, and dedication remain a

source of inspiration for young adults that seek to follow in her footsteps and lead lives grounded

in justice.

As a result of Adèle's vision and mission, ASJP has become the "home" for young adults in the

Marianist Family. For the past five years, ASJP has been led by a group of young adults from

around the country that are inspired by the Marianist Family and passionate about justice. To-

gether, they have helped create a warm and welcoming place for young adults to continue devel-

oping their identity as Marianists.
