WELCOMEFROM THE CEO & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The Adelaide Festival Centre means many things to our many different patrons. But over the recent years it has meant greater diversity of attractions to an ever widening audience base as it should in a truly multi-cultural community such as ours. The many-faceted Adelaide Festival Centre 2015 program is no exception.

FESTIVALS & PROGRAMSAdelaide Festival Centre presents three of its own festivals this year, Come Out Children’s Festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and OzAsia Festival.

The Come Out program is led by Adelaide’s own Susannah Sweeney and is a fantastic collage of creative work that sits well within the context of all our regular programs; Something on Saturday, Centre Ed, GreenRoom and more in the Youth and Education areas.

Barry Humphries will present his first Adelaide Cabaret Festival for us. This will be an event to savour and remember – curated by the finest cabaret artist this country has produced.

Joseph Mitchell will also deliver his first OzAsia Festival with an emphasis on Indonesia and contemporary Asian arts, and we welcome the return of our other multicultural festivals – Kalamela, Nowruz, Hellinika and the Many Faith Festival.

COLLABORATIONSThe season is full of collaborations – here at Adelaide Festival Centre we continuously work with other arts organisations to bring you concerts, shows and exhibitions that would not otherwise be possible. The list of this year’s collaborators is impressive - Musica Viva, Windmill Theatre, Brink Theatre, State Theatre Company of SA, Australian Dance Theatre,

Adelaide Festival of Arts, The Walkely Awards and there are many others. The ANZAC centenary will be celebrated with a monumental dance piece Rotunda with the New Zealand Dance company and a full Brass Band.

Throughout the season, The Australian Ballet, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the State Opera of South Australia will continue to be key ingredients in the artistic mix.

Our 14/15 summer holiday programs are headlined by some great commercial collaborations such as Thriller Live! and The Illusionists 1903 and others will roll out through the year including The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra from the USA, Max Raabe Palast Orchester from Germany, along with a return season of Horrible Histories – Live from the UK.

Smaller scale music-making will also continue with our International Piano Series, and the Niki Vasilakis Cocktail Concerts. And supporting all this is our ongoing investment in the creation of new work – our InSpace program.

The Riverbank and Victoria Square precincts are the engines of a vibrant Adelaide, and we are in the middle of both with the Adelaide Festival Centre and Her Majesty’s Theatre.

We hope our 2015 program brings you back often to all our venues.

OUR COVER STORY

“This photo is just a great shot of my son being free and I can see that he has awareness and flow,” Jarrett says. “He’s not falling or losing balance – there’s a lot of control in this photo. I love the poise – it’s like a dancer frozen in time.”

The composition of the photograph was no fluke. Jarrett lay on the grass and directed his eight-year-old son to run up a pillar and he knew all the elements would be well placed.

“The perspective, the composition, the light, everything is just in the right position,” he says. “Maqenzee is backlit by the sun, the bridge is coming in over the top and drawing the focus towards the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Discover, Reflect, Dream banner in the background.

Jarrett and his wife Sandra often visit the Adelaide Festival Centre with their children Maqenzee and Maelle, four. The family regularly come to see shows but also enjoy just soaking up the atmosphere of the precinct.

“I think the whole Adelaide Festival Centre is a really interesting place,” Jarrett says. “The architecture down there, the sculpture and the art, it’s a great vibe. You can feel the creativity down there.

“I’m a surveyor and I deal with architects and engineers so I can appreciate the clever way it’s been built and planned. We take the kids there all the time and always see something different. Maqenzee views the structures and built forms like a giant parkour playground.

“My parents used to take me there as a kid 30 years ago and we wanted to do the same with our kids.

“We love being a part of what the Adelaide Festival Centre does. It’s such a great place and people need to get out there and realise there’s more to life than television and computer screens.”

There’s a feeling you get when you look at our cover image of a young boy suspended in space and time. It conjures up feelings of freedom, adventure, discovery. Little wonder this emotive photo was the winner of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Instagram Photo Competition.

Entrants were asked to capture the spirit of the theme, ‘discover, reflect & dream’. For Jarrett Pinksterboer, 42, that meant photographing his energetic son Maqenzee literally bouncing off the walls with excitement at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

SO FRENCHY SO CHIC LIVE!

EMILIE SIMON

Indie Pop Darlings

Triple J once had her album on repeat and we know why. Simon is revered for her charismatic stage presence, her intricate layering of vocals and live instrumentals, her rich, organic sounds.

Sweeping strings are juxtaposed by electronic details, swirly guitar solos sit alongside piano led jazz, every song is wildly imaginative, a story in itself.

The recipient of a Ceasar award and creator of the March of the Penguins soundtrack returns to our shores this summer and the highly anticipated performance of her latest album, Mue, is sure to be a highlight. You won’t be able to take your eyes off her.

A DOUBLE BILL

THE DØ The French/Finnish duo, Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy first won over Australian listeners when they played at the Australian V Festival in 2009. Their off-kilter, indie pop sound has gained them steady rotation on Triple J.

A fusion of warped vocals, electro-folk and avant-pop percussion culminated in their highly successful debut and sophomore albums, A Mouthful and Both Ways Open Jaws, respectively.

Their third album Shake, Shook, Shaken brings synthetic dance sounds and percussion to the forefront; a new futuristic sound for the duo. Welcome back, The Dø.

CHANCE

Presented by Lisa Griffiths as part of Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSpace program

Chance is inspired by science fiction and is a study on humanity’s beginnings, behaviours and cycles. It was created and directed by Griffiths, with an electrifying score by Synnott.

Chance takes us on a journey, emerging from the natural world in the distant past, to an imagined future where the boundary between the human and non-human is thoroughly challenged.

Throughout the four sections of the work Roots, Bounce, Equilibrium and Cyborg, the dancers reveal subtle characterisation that is both humanist and abstract.

See some of Australia’s most exciting contemporary dancers bring this thought-provoking piece to life with android precision. Chance is intriguing, sensual, disturbing and humorous and will have you pondering what it means to be human.

MASQUERADE

come out children’s festival

Far, far away in a world just like ours, a mother cheers her son Joe with the tale of Jack Hare’s race

against time to deliver a message of love from the Moon to the Sun. But when Jack’s mission goes topsy-turvy, Joe and his mum must come to the

rescue, and the line between the worlds of myth and reality becomes blurred forever.

Masquerade is a new Australian play by award-winning playwright Kate Mulvany based on the iconic children’s book by Kit Williams which sold over two million copies

worldwide in the late 1970s and sparked a national British treasure hunt with its concealed clues to the

location of a jewelled golden hare.

Magically entwining high fantasy and the touching story of a child battling serious illness, Masquerade will

both delight and move. Featuring fantastical design, knockabout humour, brilliant gypsy-influenced music

and a cast of exotic characters, wise-cracking animals and a few mere mortals, this is a magical adventure

that is, at its heart, about the love between a parent and a child.

State Theatre Company of South Australia and Griffin Theatre Company in association with Adelaide Festival Centre and Windmill Theatre present

By KATE MULVANY, based on the book by KIT WILLIAMS with music by PIP BRANSON and MIKELANGELO.

When Argus’s friends are taken away by the rubbish truck he determines to find them, no matter what. What follows is an epic and dangerous quest, and Argus travels across the desert, snow, space and the ocean to find his friends and rescue them. On his adventure he encounters seals, spacepeople, sharks, cars, trains, giants, birds and other creatures, and becomes a hero.

Making use of nothing but household objects and four pairs of hands, Dead Puppet Society creates Argus’s fantastical world in a low-tech style that has its roots in puppetry and its heart in old-fashioned storytelling. This quietly touching piece will expand the imaginations of adults and children alike.

ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL

I was thrilled to have been appointed the role of Artistic Director of the 2015 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, not only because it’s an excuse for me to spend more time in my beloved Adelaide, but because I now have the opportunity to assemble artists from Australia and around the world that I admire.

I am most looking forward to presenting the eclectic program, as it’s full with some of the most impressively talented people that I have stumbled upon during my travels over the years; and no doubt they will show you a great night out no matter what your tastes. This Festival is close to my heart. By creating a festival that I myself would love to attend, I hope the 16 day 2015 Adelaide Cabaret Festival is a celebration of this unique art form in all its possibilities, for all who attend. I encourage you to delve into not only the familiar, but the new and innovative, which is inspiring the next wave of young artists and audiences alike.

When you come and join us at the 2015 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, you might even spot some of my friends, the bashfully shy Melbourne housewife Dame Edna Everage or the cultural attaché himself, Sir Les Patterson along your Cabaret Festival travels.

I look forward to seeing you then and helping us put the F back into Festival!

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this personal message from me...I wish I’d written it.

PIANOLESSONS

Concert pianist Anna Goldsworthy’s deeply-felt memoir, Piano Lessons, comes to glorious musical life. Goldsworthy’s award-winning book, which recounts her

musical awakening as a young girl, struck a deep chord with critics, readers and music lovers on its 2009 release.

Goldsworthy herself stars in this stage adaptation which, like the book, elegantly illustrates the intriguing relationship between the young pianist and her Russian

teacher. This charismatic enigma inspires and challenges her young charge in equal measure as they work through a program of sublime piano pieces, including selections from

Mozart, Liszt and Chopin.

Part theatrical production and part concert, Piano Lessons provides insight into the lives and

inspirations of the great masters to expose the process of learning, interpreting and creating music.

LISAFISCHER

& GRAND BATON

Lots of people have heard Lisa Fischer’s voice – as a backup singer with Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, and The Rolling Stones. Many were moved by her personal story and soaring voice in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary feature Twenty Feet From Stardom.

Now, Lisa Fischer takes centre stage, revisiting iconic songs etched into her heart (and ours) – tunes like Gimme Shelter, Wild Horses, It’s Only Rock and Roll, Fever, and her Grammy-winning original How Can I Ease The Pain. She has ideal co-conspirators in Grand Baton, a virtuosic ethno-funk prog-rock psychedelic soul trio that lays a rhythmic magic carpet under her feet.

Fischer scored a number one R&B song with How Can I Ease The Pain, and won a Grammy for her debut album, So Intense. Her resumé includes names such as Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, George Benson, Alicia Keys and many more.

GISELLE

Love, tragedy and unearthly

glamour

Presented by The Australian Ballet with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra proudly supported by Adelaide Festival Centre.

Love conquers death in the ultimate Romantic ballet. Since its premiere in 1841, Giselle has

captured the imagination and torn at the heart. A village girl falls in love with a man who is not all

he seems. When she finds out his deception, she dies of a broken heart. Transformed into a spirit,

she battles to save her lover in a wood haunted by the ghosts of jilted women.

Maina Gielgud’s acclaimed production, with Peter Farmer’s atmospheric designs, perfectly captures the ballet’s dramatic blend of real-life

passions and otherworldly apparitions. Yearning, madness, supernatural forces and transcendent,

redemptive love: Giselle is the Romantic era crystallised in one perfect work of art.

THE DREAM

Presented by The Australian Ballet with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra proudly supported by Adelaide Festival Centre.

Mischievous sprites, troublesome loves and dazzling dance: this sparkling triple bill celebrates Frederick Ashton, one of the greatest influences on 20th-century ballet and the epitome of the English classical style.

Shakespeare’s most charming comedy is the basis for Ashton’s whimsical take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The fate of humans and fairies are hilariously entwined in a flowery bower designed for The Royal Ballet’s original 1960s production. Ashton traces the tangled love lines of the characters with warmth and wit, and Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, arranged for the ballet by John Lanchbery, is the perfect soundtrack for his elegant, playful choreography.

Two Ashton gems, Monotones II and Symphonic Variations, show the choreographer delighting in music and pure, airy movement. This playful, captivating triple bill is perfect for the whole family.

AN INTIMATE CONCERT especially for bears, their children (and their grown-ups)

Bring along your own beloved

teddy bear

Imagine a world without teddy bears. Now quickly stop imagining because it’s far too

upsetting. Thankfully, teddies are here to stay and this captivating musical performance pays

loving tribute to these woolly wonders, who – with their pulled ears, poked eyes and unfashionable

waistcoats – somehow become our closest childhood friends.

With songs and laughter and lots of joining in, Bear With Me is a show about looking after, and

being looked after – a warm and fuzzy romp through the joy and turmoil of a teddy’s everyday life. And the best thing is you have to bring your

favourite stuffed toy along. After all, they’re the real stars of the show.

It is imperative that children bring their beloved teddy bear or similar stuffed toy to the show as they play with

it with the performers throughout!

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY'S

DE NOVO

This is dance that doesn’t play it safe

Adelaide Festival Centre presents

This is dance that doesn’t play it safe. From the minds of three choreographers, channelled through the exquisite dancers of Sydney Dance Company, comes a trio of works that break new ground – throwing caution to the wind and hurling themselves into the void of the new.

A soundscape from Australia’s acclaimed Sarah Blasko and Nick Wales takes sensual, physical form in Rafael Bonachela’s Emergence, while Alexander Ekman’s irreverent Cacti expertly skewers the pretensions of contemporary dance. Meanwhile, in a distant star system, Adelaide’s own Larissa McGowan’s Fanatic pits Alien versus Predator in a hilarious interstellar dance throwdown.

Inspired and unexpected, De Novo promises a very different evening of entertainment, as it unleashes three fresh, wily dance works on an unsuspecting Australia.

OZASIA FESTIVAL

OzAsia Festival 2015 will be my first program as Artistic Director and I can’t wait to reveal all the incredible shows we have in store. The good news is it will be an exhilarant array of contemporary theatre, dance, music, visual arts, film and food, with a cultural focus on the delights of Indonesia. The bad news is you will have to wait until we launch the full program in July to find out exactly what we are cooking up. For now, keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for tidbits and the occasional unofficial leak that may reveal some of the big surprises we have planned.

So, whether you have attended OzAsia Festival before or are about to discover some of the innovative contemporary work from across Asia for the first time, I look forward to meeting you at OzAsia Festival here at Adelaide Festival Centre.

THE ASPIRATIONS OF DAISE MORROW

From the mighty pen of Australia’s Nobel Laureate

Brink Productions in association with Adelaide Festival Centre present

From the mighty pen of Patrick White comes a timeless story about seizing the day. At the funeral of the scandalous Daise Morrow, Daise herself wanders amongst the mourners, hovering between memory and rumour. Over the fence two young dreamers take their first tentative steps into love. In Brink’s richly theatrical and immersive adaptation, The Aspirations of Daise Morrow is storytelling filled with music and light; a poignant evocation of the wonders of small beginnings, the complications of compassion and the grace and majesty of love.

ART BY SOUTH AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ARTISTS

Adelaide Festival Centre presents

Working with Country Arts SA and Ananguku arts program, we bring to the city, Our Mob, a state-wide community program, presenting the works of Aboriginal artists in exhibitions held in the Adelaide Festival Centre foyers and gallery. This ensures these incredible art works are seen by theatre patrons, visual art lovers and those just keen to learn about the stories of South Australia’s unique and talented Indigenous artists.

Over the years Our Mob has boosted the careers of numerous Indigenous artists and generated sales to support their art practices and families. Artworks are exhibited and sold under an ethical agreement with each artist.

Entries to Our Mob are open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists living in South Australia. This includes young people, emerging artists and established artists.

Emerging artists can also apply for the Don Dunstan Foundation Our Mob Emerging Artists Prize of $5,000, while artists under 18 can apply for Our Young Mob.

The work of South Australian Aboriginal artists are as diverse as the environments in which they live. This is your chance to see these fascinating, innovative pieces in one place - a tribute to the Indigenous talent that exists right here in South Australia.

ACACIA QUARTET &LYLE CHAN:AN AIDS ACTIVIST'S MEMOIR IN MUSIC

Lyle Chan is an AIDS activist and composer and his passions are beautifully interwoven in An AIDS Activist’s Memoir in Music.

The Acacia Quartet perform this emotionally powerful music, with narration by Chan, giving a truly moving insight into AIDS activism.

THE AGE

A memoir of the composer’s years as an AIDS activist during the epidemic’s darkest period, this work is the story of how activists transformed a stigmatised, fatal disease

into the manageable condition it is today. Like the autobiographical quartets of Steve Reich or Shostakovich, Lyle Chan’s AIDS memoir is confronting and touching,

but ultimately an intensely uplifting story about a community that fought against all odds for their lives, and won.

Written in the crisis years 1991-1996, but completed 20 years later, this work is agitated and tender, humorous and moving. Containing portraits of famous activist friends now

dead, it traces personal and historical episodes in the fight against AIDS, including demonstrations by direct action protest group ACT UP, of which Chan was a core member.

ARIA-nominated string quartet Acacia Quartet has earned consistent critical acclaim for their performances of this work.

In 1961, U.S. psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a series of social psychology experiments into the relationship between authority and obedience. The sensational findings of those now famous “Electric Shock” experiments have been the starting point for the development of an innovative new theatre work now.

THE MILGRAM PROJECT

A double-bill of two highly physical dance theatre works titled ‘One’s Wicked Ways’ & ‘What Lies Within’. Both these works delve into the ridiculous and frightful elements of human nature, where group dynamics and mob rule expose our potential for ‘nastiness’ and the abuse of power.

INSPACE DEVELOPMENT

Nothing epitomises Adelaide Festival Centre’s collaborative, cutting-edge spirit as much as its inSpace program.

This is a grass-roots, innovative program that gives some of Australia’s most talented, independent artists access to the Adelaide Festival Centre framework of support, including administrative, production and venue support.

The key is that audiences are invited into the rehearsal room to participate in the development of the work – they may be asked for feedback, for ideas and opinions, and so given a genuine platform to dive into the creative process.

Audiences become part of the artistic conversation, sharing, contributing and discovering ‘how it all happens’. Armed with this insight direct from artists, audiences can develop a level of understanding about the complexity of the artistic processes, a greater appreciation and connection with the works, the artists, and the venue.

This creative blurring of the line between artist and audience reinforces the Adelaide Festival Centre’s foundation philosophy that the arts belong to everyone.

Artists, writers, actors, directors, film makers, dancers, choreographers, set designers, musicians, composers, producers, performers and visual artists – all of these genres have been represented in the inSpace program, which was first launched in 2002.

Since then, hundreds of artists have been able to see their works come to life through inSpace – a program about high quality, affordable art that’s inclusive, thought-provoking and powerful.

COLLABORATION

A seductive story of temptation, manipulation and moral corruption, theatremaker Van Badham’s latest collaboration with the five.point.one ensemble is an adaptation of Sheridan La Fanu’s 1872 Gothic novella, Carmilla. La Fanu’s dark tale of an isolated family’s infiltration by a vampire is a means for Badham to explore contemporary Australian political themes of predation of the weak by the powerful, the vulnerability of the sick and the dysfunction of a divided society.

MY CARMILLA

There was a rabbit plague, and there were immigrants. There was a Metaphor. And the Metaphor was going to be the play. And then it didn’t work. And there was the beginning of a very personal account of what it’s like to be new here. This is a development of that personal account.
