Addressing the Needs of Gifted/Talented Students: Resources for Learning at HomeAll students are to receive an education appropriate to their individual capabil-ities, interests, and needs. Students must have learning opportunities that help develop their abilities to the highest level. Gifted and talented students are atypical learners who require specialized learning experiences beyond the regular curriculum to ensure success.

Teachers of gifted/talented students dierentiate the core curriculum through various means, including flexible groupings, acceleration of content, indepen-dent study, tiered assignments, interest centers, learning centers, compacting in student’s area of strength, questioning strategies, and use of above grade-level resources. Curriculum and instruction for gifted/talented learners must include depth, complexity, novelty, and acceleration:

Depth: Investigation into details that further understanding in the area of study. Concrete is directed toward abstract, known toward unknown. Students may look at historical patterns and trends within the area of study.

Complexity: Problems, issues and prevailing themes within the area of study are defined. Connections are made between various areas of study. The subject is looked at from a variety of perspectives and multiple solutions are sought.

Novelty: Personal expression and interpretation of knowledge is sought. Original investigations and experi- ments are pursued. New and unique ways of teaching, learning, and sharing understanding (i.e., novel products) are used.

Acceleration: Advanced resources and strategies are utilized to study a subject at a more sophisticated level.

Teachers, parents, and caregivers can continue to support the needs of gifted/talented learners while learning at home. The following resources have been thoughtfully compiled to ensure that students have access to high-level dierentiated learning opportunities at home. These resources and ideas may be used to supplement and support other academic resources provided by L.A. Unified schools to address the unique academic and social-emotional needs of gifted/talented learners.
