PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF UGANDA
•Uganda is a landlocked country with an area of 241,551
•Average altitude of 1200m above sea level
•2 rainy season are experienced although these merge as you move away from the equator. Mean rainfall is from 800 - 1700 mm
• Uganda’s population stands at 34 million people. Population is largely rural and depends on land resources for survival
• Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy contributing to 42% of the national GDP

Quick facts on energy
and climate… Energy situation in Uganda
Energy is the 2nd largest sink of expenditure (16%) in Ugandan
households after food and water (45%)
80% of Ugandans use kerosene lamps (tadooba/lantern) as main light source at night = smoking 2 packs of cigarettes in the
process each night.
Globally this practice is behind the 1.4 million pre-mature
deaths per annum
95% of Ugandan households use wood or charcoal as main
source of energy for cooking (UBoS, 2010). 5000ha lost per
month from this practice
Uganda has discovered over 2.5bn barrels of potentially
recoverable petroleum reserves
Climate change is expected to increase temperatures in Uganda by up to 1.5°C in the next 20 years and by up to 4.3°C
by the 2080s. Uganda is climate vulnerable

CLIMATE CHANGE IN UGANDA
Historical changes that have occurred in recent times such as famine, heavy rainfall, prolonged dry spells, reduction in
water levels, etc shows
that Uganda is feeling the
effects of climate change

IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE -

Landslides in Bududa, Eastern
Uganda in March 2010. Over 300
people died and Over 700 families
were displaced

IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Low agricultural production resulting into famine
and poverty
•Prevalence of disease in people, animals and crops
•Reduction in ecosystem integrity and resilience, and
decline in biodiversity
•Decrease in forest area and area under cultivation WHO statistic of 4.3 million indoor pollution-related deaths in 2012 alone. Nearly a third of the world’s population still uses unsafe materials for cooking and keeping warm. [t]his disproportionately affects women and children.” pollution is accountable for one in eight deaths worldwide. Catherine Kärnbo
Tackling climate change may not be sound clear to an ordinary Ugandan but each one has a role to play thus the awareness.
Catherine Kärnbo
In Uganda, deforestation continues at an alarming rate
of approx 13 million hectares
per year. Yet over 70% of the
population depends on
biomass for their energy
demands
Catherine Kärnbo
Traditional wood burning methods are so
wasteful and un healthy

ENERGY SAVING STOVES
Top Lit Up Draft (TLUD) stove It is a micro gasify
stove with temperature up 720
C, less particulate matter and low emission
Catherine Kärnbo
Rocket energy saving stove. It is insulated, has high temperatures and chimney for the emission

solar lamp
Govile John from Lilia,
“I have come to buy lamp.
My parish chief told me
about it, what do you use
at home? At home I use
tadooba and I spend 300/=
@ day. I have 18 & 3yrs
others died. I am so happy
to have this lamp. Now I
can walk back home
happily”.

Over 21.000 lamps
that have been so
far distributed in
Uganda reduces
CO2-udledningen
with not less than
3.000 ton CO2 in a
year.

Number of Health Centers with Solar Refrigerators 02
Number of Domestic energy saving stoves 17,000
stoves
Number of institutional stoves 115 stoves

CONCLUSION
•Need for partnership between local NGOs like JEEP and international agencies to build capacity in the communities
•Lobby for government support in order to support civil society’s efforts in the energy sector, e.g seminars, school curriculum
•Combined efforts in research work on more alternative fuels in order to reduce the reliance on wood fuels and other techiniques to mitigate climate change
