PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC WHEN IT IS DEGRADABLE

Plastic is strong, durable, versatile, lightweight, safe and inexpensive… some of the reasons for its success in all kinds of uses

and products in our daily lives.

However, the problem is that plastic does last rather too long if it gets into the environment and especially in the oceans.

Symphony, a company based in the UK, has found the answer to this problem.

The d2wTM

additive put into the plastic at the extrusion stage will make the finished product "oxo-biodegradable" so that it

will degrade and disappear in a short timescale, leaving no fragments, no methane and no harmful residues.

Degradability is not always a disposal option - you can still re-use and recycle - it is low cost insurance against the

accumulation of plastic waste in the environment.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This new technology produces plastic which degrades by a process of OXOdegradation.

The technology is based on a very small amount of pro-degradant additive being introduced into the manufacturing process,

thereby changing the behavior of the plastic. Degradation begins when the programmed service life is over (as controlled by

the additive composition) and the product is no longer required. Degradation consistent with changes expected by ASTM D

6954-04 has been certified by RAPRA.

The plastic does not just fragment, but will be consumed by bacteria and fungi after the additive has reduced the molecular

structure to a level which permits living micro-organisms access to the carbon and hydrogen. It is therefore

“biodegradable.” This process continues until the material has biodegraded to nothing more than CO2, water, and humus,

and it does not leave fragments of petro-polymers in the soil. Oxo-biodegradable plastic passes all the usual ecotoxicity

tests, including seed germination, plant growth and organism survival (daphnia, earthworms) tests carried out in

accordance with international standards.

Therefore, these products will degrade in any outdoor or indoor environment where air is present, even in the absence of

water. This is a very important factor in relation to litter, because a large amount of plastic waste cannot be collected.

Unlike PVC, the polymers from which oxo-biodegradable plastics are made do not contain organo-chlorine or PCBs, nor do

they emit methane or nitrous oxide even under anaerobic conditions.

“CONTROLLABLE” SERVICE LIFE

The length of time it takes for oxo-biodegradable products to degrade can be “programmed” at the time of manufacture

and can be as little as a few months or as much as a few years. They are protected from degradation by special

antioxidants until ready for use, and storage-life will be extended if the products are kept in cool, dark conditions.

� Degradation has been proved in accordance with the requirements of ASTM 6954-04 Tier 1 by passing ASTM 5510

Degradation Standard. Evidence: RAPRA Report 46095. The ability of d2wTM

to comply with the Biotic

(Biodegradation) Tier 2 of ASTM 6954-04 has been demonstrated by the loss of molar mass achieved after

degradation. Evidence: RAPRA Report 46303. Another related tests included Accelerated Weathering in

accordance with ASTM D2565:1999 and Oxidation Induction Time in Accordance with Polymer Degradation and

Stability, Vol.72(2001) 367-376.

� Environmentally safe: The chemical elements used in d2wTM

totally degradable products have been successfully

tested for soil safety and eco-toxicity in compliance with EN 13432 and Tier 3 of ASTM 6954-04. These

demonstrated that the compost with additive did not cause any toxic or harmful effects or by products and is

therefore totally soil safe. Evidence: OWS Report MST-4/1-d2wb&d2wc.

� Food Safe: The additive is safe for direct food contact according to the requirements of 2002/72/EC regulations for

Direct Food Contact materials. Evidence: - RAPRA report 46137. It is also compliant with FDA Chapter 21 Section

Our BOPP films are specially designed for all those companies with

strong environmental awareness.

The use is limitless whenever a flexible packaging is needed. Common

applications are oriented to consumer product packaging for the food

industry. BOPPs are food safe according to FDA and USDA standards.

When degraded leave no harmful residences on the soil.

These Bi-axially Oriented Popypropylene (BOPP) films have improved stiffness, high

tensile strength, excellent optics, easy print-ability, smooth surface, low static electricity

and good water barrier properties. BOPP films provide excellent UV light protection,

humidity, aroma and light barriers.

Our BOPPs are completely customizable; we work with customers to analyze their

precise needs in order to tailor the package that achieves the optimal conditions. Corona treatment and heat seal ability

can be present on one or both sides. Printing options include multiple colors and inks which are also environmentally

friendly.

ANTI STATIC POLY BAGS

Commonly used to prevent electrostatic discharges during shipping or storing, poly bags have become the

most popular solution for packing electronic devices.

The static travels around these poly bags and dissipates before it has a chance to damage contents.

Our poly bags are made of a unique oxo-biodegradable polyethylene anti static film that has an extended

useful life of 5 years minimum before degradation occurs. This gives you the possibility to reuse them and to
