ADAPTATION – MAKING OF By Daniel Reason

CHOSEN CHARACTER

After the interim crit, I had to choose between the 6 Charles

Dickens characters that I had previously designed. The Ebenezer

Scrooge building was one in particular that was already well

developed and being close to being a final design. Not only that,

but due to it’s abstract form, it would be quite a fascinating thing

to make in Maya.

ADDING COLOUR

In terms of adding colour, the building needed to look like it

belonged in the Dickens era (mid-19th Century). This therefore

meant that wood and brick would be the prominent materials

used in the architecture.

As Scrooge is an old character, and is also quite a mean one,

the use of colour should demonstrate that.

SIDE AND BACK VIEWS

As this is a turnaround, views of both

sides and back of the building were

needed. By looking at the original front

View and various British 19th Century

building photos, these views were based

on those images, so that these sides still

reflect the intended era.

CREATING TEXTURES

While following the intended colour

scheme, these textures were painted in

Photoshop in a painted style. This lead to

the option to add tone and shadows in the

structure itself.

Without having too much detail, these

Textures make the final building look like

an actual wooden model.

APPLYING TEXTURES

Once all the UVs had been

organised and all the textures

had been created, it was a

simple case of applying them

to the right object(s). For the

most part, lamberts were the

chosen type of textures, with

only the 2 light holders being

made with Blinns, as they

needed a metallic shine.

TIME OF DAY TUTORIALS

By following the exterior lighting

tutorials, adding lighting to the

scene became much simpler. A

mid-day setting was created

first, before moving onto the

intended sunset lighting. This form

of lighting adds to the wooden

structures in the building and add

another layer of colour, that wasn’t

possible through the textures.

FIXING LIGHTING

Although the sunset exterior lighting

tutorial had been completed, some

more adjustments to the lighting were

needed. The textures looked a bit

faded and the shadows needed

Improving, for example. The lighting

now create reasonably realistic

shadows and effects on the building.
