Local 825 members turned out in full force and werejoined by six other trade unions in 90-degree heat onJune 27 to enthusiastically endorse the reelection ofGovernor Chris Christie. It was a historic occasion forLocal 825, as it marked the first time a New Jersey gov-

ernor had visited the training center. It was historic forGovernor Christie as well, marking the first time aRepublican governor in New Jersey has ever won suchbroad support from Labor. Read more and see the pho-tos on pages 4 and 5.

we closed a painful chapterin our history, we have focused like alaser on raising the stature of our Localthroughout New Jersey and our fivecounties in New York State.

Pride, Professionalism and Integrity The reason for this relentless focus is

that we will be recognized for who weare and what we offer: a strong belief inourselves, hard work, the highest level ofskills and a dedication to our trade. Our reputation raises our profile and

involves us in business opportunities. While certain entities have tried to

paint union members with a negativebrush, we are showing all the goodthings we do, from our involvement withthe Ulster County Sheriff’s department,the help we provide the MultipleSclerosis Society, the scholarships weprovide our youth and many other posi-tive things.Our efforts have been recognized.

Prestigious organizations now seek toassociate themselves with us. We havebeen given a seat on the N.J.Transportation Trust Fund Authority'sboard, elected to the IUOE ExecutiveBoard and asked to join the board of theCommunity Health Charities of NewJersey. We’ve been recognized by theNewark Archdiocese, NJ SEED, theEssex-West Hudson Labor Council and,this fall, the N.J. Alliance for Action.When the Port Authority wants someoneto speak at its events, they invite us.

ELEC is all about business On the business side, we actively pro-

mote Local 825 with the message “On

Time, On Budget, OnTarget.” With your part-nership, we started ELECto pursue business oppor-tunities and advocate forour interests. We encourage our mem-

bers to be the best.Technology continues itsrapid change. Maintainyour training, renew yourlicenses and credentialsand continue to offer the

best work to our signatory contractors.

Building on our base It’s been an honor to serve you during

these past three years. In the next three,we must continue to advance our cause.There are several things we can do tomaintain our competitive advantage.One is to recognize that technology istaking over. We need to stay on top oftraining opportunities to sharpen ourskills. Another is to maintain yourlicensing and credentials as mentionedabove, so that you’re ready to work with-out delay.If we do, the jobs will come more

quickly, the doors will open wider andour members can hold their heads highand be proud to say, “I’m a Local 825operating engineer.” We are a Union in the best sense of

the word and all of us have worked tomake this happen, members, businessagents, officers, Everyone. With contin-ued unity, our interests will be served.

Special Milestones While we thank all our members for

their hard work, it is important that weacknowledge special milestones. In ourlast issue of 825 News, we named each ofthis year’s 115 fortieth anniversarymembers. In this issue we name thosewho attained their 20th, 25th, 30th,35th and 45th anniversaries.These are members who have dedi-

cated their working lives to our Local. Itis important we show them our recogni-tion and gratitude. See who they areand, the next time you see them, be sureto say “congratulations!”

MuckFest 2013

For the third straight year, our members volunteered theirtime, expertise and heavy equipment to set the stage for thelocal MS Society’s largest annual fundraiser in the fightagainst multiple sclerosis. Our members dug the trenchesand helped construct the course under the leadership of Bill

LaCass. Bill and a Local 825 running team also took partin the event, which drew 2,500 participants to WestOrange’s South Mountain Reservation, raising more than$255,000. When it was over, Local 825 was there to restorethe park to its pre-event condition.

Training Center hosts More than 500 members of seven

labor unions converged onLocal 825’s training center in

Dayton to proclaim their support for thereelection of Gov. Chris Christie.

Included were members of the IBEWLocals 102 and 164, the Steamfitters Local475, the Cement Masons 29, the ElevatorConstructors Local 1 of New York and NewJersey, Plumbers Local 24 New Jersey andthe Sprinkler Fitters UA Local 696.

Introduced by Business Manager GregLalevee, Christie thanked the members fortheir support and told them, “For the lastfour years all I’ve cared about is trying toget you guys back to work.”

The governor was praised by each ofthe seven unions that were present for hiscommitment to the people of New Jerseyand its labor workforce. Speakers cited hisdetermination to get federal support fol-lowing Hurricane Sandy, his push for rais-ing the Bayonne Bridge, his promotion ofdevelopment in Atlantic City and hisefforts to expand the N.J. Turnpike andGarden State Parkway, along with a host ofother infrastructure projects.

In addition, they noted Christie’sefforts to attract and retain private indus-try. As more than one speaker put it, pub-lic projects are not enough to ensure fullemployment…the private sector must alsohave a chance to succeed.

Christie’s remarks were cut short by asudden downpour. It may have cooled thetemperature but it did nothing to dampenthe crowd’s enthusiasm, or Christie’s. In adriving rain, he waded into the crowd toshake hands and take pictures with mem-bers and their families.

District Health Fairs Focus on Member Wellness

Most of us don’t think about our healthuntil we feel ill or have an accident.

Preventive care is important because it mayidentify health care issues early when theycan be more effectively treated and avoidcostly complications.The IUOE Local 825 Welfare Fund wants

to see you stay healthy and encourages mem-bers and their eligible dependents to makeuse of their benefits and attend their district’shealth fair and SMAC Blood Clinics.District 2 recently held its health fair at the

Dayton training center. The event was wellattended and members took the opportunity tohave health screens and obtain vital health infor-mation, as shown in the photos on this page.They also learned about the two remaining

SMAC Blood Clinics for 2013. They will beheld as follows:

The Health Fairs begin at 3 p.m. and endat 7 p.m.

If you’re planning to attend a health fair orblood clinic, don’t forget these importantreminders:• You must fast for six hours prior to yourblood being drawn

• You must present a doctor’s prescriptionfor any additional tests desired

• Eligible dependents must be at least 18years of age

We want you to use the benefits you’veworked for over the years to stay healthy!

It was all about the families and their stu-dent winners who came to collect theirprizes and be honored by fellow members ofLocal 825.As we announced in our last newsletter, six

$10,000 scholarships were awarded toVeronika Lynn Geiger-Durso of Howell,Antonella Gini of Bridgewater, EllysaLamperti of Port Murray, Timothy Lattimerof Medford, Ashley Singewald of Succasunnaand Chelsea Vena of Matawan.Three grants of $1,500 each were awarded

to: Nicole Barrett of Neshanic Station,Timothy Reed of Northfield and RachelSteelman of Mays Landing.The Local 825 Scholarship and Grant

Program is administered by Dr. Tracy Changof Rutgers University. Dr. Chang joined in the

dinner to congratulatethe winners andaddressed the studentsand their families. Sheexplained how theapplications wereindependently evaluat-ed by three Rutgersfaculty members inorder to arrive at thefinal selections.The winners and their families were greet-

ed by Business Manager Greg Lalevee. Inannouncing the awards, Greg was joined byPresident John Wood, Jim McGowan, BobDavis and Joe Logan. The winners eachexpressed gratitude to Local 825 and itsmembers for the financial assistance.

Bayonne Bridge Begins Reconstruction Local 825 was well represent-

ed on June 26 as GovernorChris Christie and Port Authorityof New York and New JerseyChairman David Samsonannounced the go-ahead for theBayonne Bridge reconstruction,which will raise the bridgeroadbed by 64 feet to a total of215 feet above the Kill Van Kullat high tide, allow supertankers topass beneath it on their way to theterminals in Newark andElizabeth.The project had been on the

boards for three years and hasbeen supported consistently byLocal 825 leadership, includingGreg Lalevee, John Wood, MarkLongo, John LoCastro and JimBlack, who were on hand for theceremony. The project is estimat-ed to generate 6,000 constructionjobs. C
