Congratulations to all our senior prize winners.

Hannah Patterson gained four subject Firsts to take the top academic prize – Dux of the school – at the recent Prize Giving ceremony, at the Bruce Mason Centre. She was 1st in English, History, Classical Studies and Media Studies.

Equally impressive was Muyu (Naomi) Liu, a student in the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme who gained the top prizes for Individual and Societies, Literature, Language and Mathematics. in this position. It enables us to make strong predictions in regards to the funding for the school, particularly when we are preparing to fit out the new buildings and newly refurbished Main Building with equipment and furniture.

Next year is a busy year for the school with much construction around the site, an election process for the Takapuna Grammar School Board of Trustees, as the current membership come to the end of their term, and the selection of a new Principal. Please let me know if you are interested in the role of a Trustee, as I, and others, will be happy to explain the significance of the role.

In closing, I would like to thank the community for their support and recognition following the recent announcement of my appointment to King’s College. This support has been overwhelming. In the meantime, I look forward to leading Takapuna Grammar School through Term 1 next year, keeping up business as usual.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. I look forward to seeing you all next year, particularly those students who start their secondary career at Takapuna Grammar School.

Dear Parents and Guardians

This is the last newsletter for the year, a copy of which is also delivered to our incoming Year 8 families. I have been delighted with the progressions of 2015 and, in reflecting on the year, thank the very many parents and community members who have contributed to the developments of 2015.

Particular highlights for me include the raft of student achievement on so many activities and pursuits. Takapuna Grammar School gaining the highest allocation of scholarships from Victoria University in New Zealand is included in this. The students have, this year, been so very impressive and have been engaged in school and the activities it offers to them. Many past pupils have kept in contact this year, too, and they regularly comment on how well prepared the school has made them for whatever they do beyond their final year, whether tertiary study or employment options. It has been satisfying to receive these themes this year.

In celebrating the year, I also include the celebration of the 100% pass for the 2014 International Baccalaureate Diploma candidates, as their results came through to us this year. I am particularly proud of the securing the $26,000,000.00 for the Main Building refurbishment, which also includes new building. This provides the iconic building with a bright future, enabling its ability to serve future generations of students at Takapuna Grammar School while maintaining its historic significance. I am proud of the prerogatives we have placed around student engagement and think we have made great progress on the initiatives of ASPIRE and PERFORM, currently appointing leadership roles to these areas. I am also very proud of the Manaaki Mentoring progress, which we introduced this year. It has started well and, in securing its longevity, I am very keen to gain the view of the parents and students of the school. To this end we have made a link available: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3D6C9PX, for you and your students to give to us the feedback. It is a simple process. I will be highlighting this link to the students on their return to school. If you would like to complete it early, it is available now.

Enrolments for 2016 have been arriving strongly. We are attempting to keep the roll steady at 1700 students despite families moving in-zone to secure a place. We are lucky to be

PTA 2015Thanks to everyone who has supported the PTA events

over the year – you can see below that it really does make a difference. We aim to bring the school community together by holding regular events, and to fundraise for equipment that would otherwise be outside departmental budgets.

2015 has been busy for the PTA, with events throughout the year:

• Three talks for parents were hosted – John Cowan (The Parenting Place), Michele A’Court, and Allison Mooney.

• Morning tea for TGS Staff.• “Totally 80’s” dance for parents, staff and friends.• Studio Photograph fundraiser with photographer

Michael Overend;• Comedy Night with Paul Ego, Jeremy Corbett and

Matt Stellingwerf;• “Takafest” Performing Arts Expo – PTA assisted with

running this.• 10th Annual TGS PTA Golf Day.

Support for TGS Students from the PTA in 2015: Thanks to the involvement of the community, the PTA has funded a total of approx $44,000 to TGS projects:

New Seating in Sir Peter Blake building, from funds held.Various sporting and cultural groups, from the “80s’

Dance” funds.‘Green screen infinity wall’ for Art Department, from

Photo fundraiser.Performing Arts equipment, from Comedy Night.Furniture for Library, from funds held.TGS PTA Hardship grant.Upgrade drinking fountains to fill bottles – pending.Bench seats, purchased as funds allow.Sports Gazebo, funds from 2014.Weights for Rowing and other Sports, funds from 2014.‘PTA Inspiration Award’ at Senior Prizegiving –

congratulations to Mavae Vakavelo. The Golf Day held on 5th November was a great day out.

Thanks to the support of the local community we raised over $9,000, partly to go towards sports equipment.

Ongoing Project:Once the current major building work is completed, the PTA

will pledge the funds raised from the sales of our cookbook,

‘Taste of Takapuna’, towards a major project to enhance the central outdoor area to improve the break-time environment for our students. So far we’ve raised almost $65,000 towards our target of $90,000. If every family bought just one more book we would reach our target. The recipes are firm favourites with the TGS community, making an ideal Christmas gift for friends, family or business contacts. Please be part of this exciting project - contact PTA or school office to purchase.

Thanks go to our committed PTA members, who really care about TGS students, and take a lot of time to work towards these projects. We also thank a small group of helpers, who over the years have given many hours to PTA projects.

SCHOOL NEWS

As we depart, at the end of another year, it was fantastic to get confirmation from the Ministry of $26 million in funding for the restoration of the Main Block. The much overdue work can now get underway. With tenders, reviews and signoffs it will still be early to mid-next year before work starts in earnest. However we have now started. .

Next year it is time to elect a new Board of Trustees for the school. Strong parent and community input into governance is a key part of aligning the school’s goals and aspirations with those of the community. If anyone is interested in finding out more about what being on the Board involves please contact me or one of the other current Board members.

A message from the Chair of the Board of TrusteesAs we farewell another cohort of Year 13 students I say, I hope

you will always remember TGS for the positive first step it has provided on your journey through life.

For all the other students, make sure that you take advantage of all the opportunities the school offers next year to continue building your personal legacy. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I’d like to thank everyone who has provided input into the school this year. I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable summer break.

Junge filmemacher gewinnen erfolg - Young filmmakers gain success

The three Year 10 German classes collaborated to create a Short Film which gained second place in a National German Short Film competition run by the Goethe Institut in Wellington.

The judge said that there were a large number of films entered by schools and universities from all around New Zealand. The film topic this year was “der Igel” (the Hedgehog) and the judges looked for unique ideas, humour, an interesting story and good, colloquial German.

Takapuna Grammar School’s film was about a hedgehog on the school grounds that went missing. Students went around asking various people “wo ist der Igel?” (pronounced eagle),

with some hilarious answers. The Year 10 students not only used a very good knowledge

of German but also incorporated other skills such as art, editing and camera work. This is the third year in a row that Takapuna Grammar School has placed highly in this prestigious competition. The film will be shown in a cinema in Wellington in early December.

Important notice for Year 13 students and parents

Students who plan on tertiary study after they leave school should apply for their Student Allowance or Loan by 16 December.

It doesn’t matter if you are still unsure where or what you’ll be studying, the best thing is to apply early. Get your application in by 16 December to make sure you can get everything sorted ready for the start of your course – wherever or whatever it might be!

When applying for a Student Allowance or Loan for the first time, students need to prove their identity. This can be done online by signing up for a RealMe verified identity.

Starting tertiary study is an exciting time, but there are a lot of things to be organised. Get one out of the way – apply now for your Student Loan or Allowance at studylink.govt.nz

Book bingo and beyondAt the end of July, the TGS Student Book Club started a new

challenge – to read 25 books from 25 different categories by the end of the school year. That gave the group of students 19 weeks to “cross off” as much of their bingo sheet as they could. Just like regular bingo, a line would earn them a small prize (by popular vote, this was determined to be a Cookie Time cookie) and finishing the whole 5x5 grid would mean taking home the grand prize of a iTunes or PaperPlus voucher (which of course meant new books!).

Several weeks before the end of Term 4, Emilly Fan crossed off her final bingo square and collected her last cookie. She had read 25 books in 13 weeks, averaging almost two books a week, and beating the next most prolific reader by a sizable margin.

Most of the categories to be fulfilled were pre-determined, such as ‘a book by a NZ author’ or ‘a book written by someone under 30’ but there were eight blank spaces to be filled in with your own choices, which added an element of individuality.

“All of the students involved have made more of an effort to read something a bit different than they might normally, which was part of the motivation for doing this,” says Library Assistant and teacher, Miss Stewart. “Plus, the benefit of some of the categories is that they prove that all writers start somewhere – that some of them start very young, and there’s no reason to wait to write if that’s what you want to do with your life.”

The category ‘by someone under 30’ is certainly one that made people think. “A lot of participants thought that would be difficult, but it turned out to be really easy – Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas and Alexandra Adornetto all started writing at a young age and have popular series of books in our school library.”

The combination of highlighting Kiwi authors and young authors, as well as sharing progress of her own writing, is something Miss Stewart hopes will encourage students to write more in their own

time. “We actually have a young novelist in our midst already – Year 13 student, James McInroy, has self-published his first book and is working on his second, as part of National Novel Writers’ Month, which challenges people to complete 50,000 words in 30 days. James’ first book, ‘One More Shot & Other Cases’ is available on Amazon.

Knitting clubThe knitting club, hosted in the library on Thursday

lunchtimes, is a communal time for teachers and students to discuss “politics” while actively focused on their personal or group knitting projects. The club was initiated by Miss Stewart with the aid of Mrs White - who offered the use of the Reading Room, with the goal of teaching willing students the life skill of knitting as well as pointing out all of the practicalities and multiple projects that can be created. Ms Nam was also around for crochet help and advice.

Although every member of the club had personal goals when joining, such as learning to knit for the first time, perfecting stitches and techniques for more challenging patterns/designs and/or trying something new, there was always help from more experienced knitters. By having teachers and students at the club it allowed the knowledge to be spread about special tricks of the trade such as different methods of casting on (a term used for starting a project) to how to fix the giant hole that randomly appeared.

A service objective of the club developed after a few students felt comfortable and able to develop and try more challenging projects, which was to create and produce beanies to be worn by premature babies at Starship hospital, in Auckland. The knitting club hopes to build on their stash of baby beanies and visit Starship next year in time for the cooler weather. If you want to donate wool, or want to make a

ART & DESIGN

“Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

The work featured on these pages is by our year 10 Art classes. The theme the students explored was open ended, but began with a wide ranging class discussion about war and peace. Students then researched and wrote about such political protest artists as Banksy, Carmelo González Iglesias, Kathe Kollwitz and Willie Bester. Finally, each student interpreted the theme in their own way, creating woodblock prints by carving out MDF board with lino tools. Colour could be added, by printing onto collage or working into the prints with paint.

1st XI Queensland Cricket tour

Leaving the gusty winds and sudden rain fall behind, 14 elite cricketers left the wild Auckland weather to tour Queensland and enjoy the warm weather of Australia. The boys were away for a total of 10 days, including four games against Queensland high schools.

The first of the 10 day tour was against St Josephs in Brisbane. TGS batted first and scored 267 runs within the first 50 overs; Mitchell Bremner made 64 runs and Sam Hinds, 61. Two St Josephs’ players made centuries but TGS managed to bowl them out for 252, in the last over, with Steven Newey picking up four wickets for 21 runs and Connor Bessell, four wickets for 44. The boys headed up to the Sunshine Coast, playing Sunshine Coast Grammar School at the Caloundra Cricket Club. Sunshine Coast Grammar batted first and

made a total of 153. This was no match for our boys as they chased the total down in the 32nd over for the loss of 3 wickets. Mitchell Bremner again performed well, with an impressive 89 not out.

On the sixth day the team had a Twenty20 match against a Caloundra Cricket Club team. TGS made 144 and managed to bowl Caloundra out for just over 80 in the 20th over, after the game coach, Pat Cole, stated that it was one of the best fielding performances he had seen and would pay good money to watch a performance like that again.

The last game of the tour was against Mathew Flinders College in Buderim. After a slight rain delay Takapuna managed to knock over Mathew Flinders for 212. Matt Strain showed off his bowling skills by taking five wickets for 25 runs. A rough start to the innings for TGS but the middle order were up to the task and got the team into a position to get over the line. Jack Breen made a handy 43 with Jono Kemp supporting him well for 36. Jasper Edgar and Steven Newey finished the job in the 49th over.

Between long intensive days of cricket in the sun, the boys hit the beaches of Caloundra, scoring some waves, getting the adrenaline going with a trip to Dreamworld and going Karting to keep things exciting.

Volleyballers reach new heights

While most TGS students were relaxing, studying or sleeping during the holidays, six Year 11 boys represented North Harbour in their chosen sport and Brett O’Neil represented North Island.

Jac Roberts played in the North Harbour A team in the Interprovincial championships in Tauranga, while Alex Roberts, Keenan Hodge, Liam Donnelly, and Will Watson played in the B team, and Tom Smeed in the C. These boys, who have played

volleyball since Year nine, had a very successful tournament, with the Harbour A team coming 2nd, B team 3rd and C team 7th.

Brett O’Neil spent his ‘holidays’ in Melbourne playing in the Under 17 North Island team, competing in the Australian Junior State Champs. The team, coached by TGS coach, Tristan Hegglun, placed 4th in the Challenger series. Over the summer, Brett plans to qualify for, and compete in, some stages of the National Beach Tour.

Not only have the boys reached new levels for school volleyball, by representing North Harbour, Alex Roberts, Jac Roberts, Keenan Hodge and Tom Smeed have also been selected to represent New Zealand in the Under 17 Beach Volleyball team. They will play in Vanuatu, in mid-December.

North Harbour rugby awardsAt the recent North Harbour Rugby Awards night, several

Takapuna Grammar players featured. Takapuna Grammar School ex-pupils Alyx Hodgson won the Senior U85kg Player of the Year, Grant Thompson won the Maori Senior Player of the Year and Brendon Pickerill won the Premier Coaches Referee of the Year. Dance (under wraps)

evening 2016Attention potential sponsors. Hola to costume designers and

makers. The Dance Department are in secret planning meetings for next year’s show that will push the boundaries of what is possible for school dance.

Professional dance shows have inspired us to create something similar in a school renowned for Performing Arts. Nothing can be revealed at present except that Tuesday 28th June needs to be booked into your calendars now.

Costuming will be a vital feature of the show and we need designers and costume makers capable of sewing intricate costumes including unitards.

If your business wants to be associated with this spectacular night, please get in contact with Juliet Cryns, [email protected].

Takapuna Grammar’s Perform initiative will be a contributor to the Dance Evening which will kick off Taka Fest 2016.

Tour manager, Callum Wardell reported that “the boys have played some very impressive cricket, and to win four from four in Queensland is an outstanding achievement.” The team can all be very proud of the way they represented Takapuna Grammar while on their Queensland tour.

Grammar LinkFulbright-Meg Everton Travel Awards for New Zealand Teachers

Meg’s working life and one of her greatest interests was in education. The net proceeds of sale of the Snells Beach property have been left to the Takanini Primary School for the establishment of a Library. Takanini Primary School is in a low income area in South Auckland and quite close to where Ardmore Teachers College once stood and where Meg spent many happy and fulfilling years as a lecturer.

The Library is to be called the Meg Everton Library and will be a most appropriate memorial to her love of teaching and her recognition of the value of reading.

Meg’s will left her papers to the Alexander Turnbull Library. That admirable institution has collected cartons of those papers from Parnell and taken them to Wellington for sorting and classification. The material that is of no interest to them will in due course be returned. Meg’s own life and achievements were exceptional.

Meg left a further bequest to the Fulbright New Zealand Scholarship Trustees. I quote from their response to the news of this bequest:

“We are going to create the new “Fulbright-Meg Everton Travel Awards for New Zealand Teachers” which will be for New Zealand Teachers and Principals in the education sector (Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary), to visit the U.S.A. for 12 to 90 days to undertake a professional development activity (of their choice) which will enhance their professional knowledge, practice and/or skills. Recipients will be required to share the learnings and benefits with their peers upon their return to New Zealand.

A small number of Fulbright-Meg Everton Travel Awards will be offered each year.

The awards are valued at up to $5,000 to assist with costs associated with a short-term visit to the US (travel (international and domestic), accommodation, per diems, and professional development activity costs). We expect the bequest funds to last five years and to enable at least 10 teachers this wonderful opportunity. Hopefully we will be able to attract additional funding to expand the programme and make it last a lot longer.

We are still doing further work to finalise the details and going through the approval stage but we hope to implement the first application cycle in June this year.

There are not enough opportunities like this for teachers, and there will be many benefits. We have sought advice from the Cognition Institute and from a few education people and they all are very supportive.”

Meg also left a significant bequest to the NZ Symphony Orchestra in recognition of the years she spent enjoying their performances and her love of classical music.

Margaret Eila Everton B.A. Dip Tch. - A resume of Meg’s extraordinary life

• Born 25th December 1919, at 12 Ewen St, in Takapuna. • 1925-32 - Attended Belmont Primary School.• 1933-37 - Takapuna Grammar School; Meg’s Academic &

Building apprentice Jacob Hesketh has been named the Northern Region’s Registered Master Builders Carters 2015 Apprentice of the Year. The results were announced at an awards evening on Friday 28 August at Massey University in Auckland. The 23-year-old from Takapuna trained through BCITO and works for PHD Construction. Judges said Jacob showed a passion for building, and is capable of going far in the construction industry. He was awarded a range of products and tools, $2,000 to spend at Carters, and a spot at an Outward Bound Course.

Second place in the Northern region went to Aaron Butler, 20,

Obituary for Gifford Jackson – April 1922 to October 2015

It is with sadness that we learnt of the passing of Gifford Jackson – widely regarded as ‘the godfather of New Zealand industrial design’ – aged 93.

Gifford was a pupil at Takapuna Grammar from 1936-1938. He excelled academically, and regularly won the school’s drawing prizes. In 1938 Gifford was in ‘5 Special’ – Takapuna Grammar’s first co-education class, and gained his University Entrance a year earlier than normal.

In 1939, at just 17, Gifford was en route to study Naval Architecture at Edinburgh University when war broke out. Bravely, he continued on, taking his turn with other passengers in keeping watch for German U-boats for the rest of the voyage. In 1944 he joined the RAF – and trained as a navigator in the UK and Canada.

He began his design career in 1945 at Fisher & Paykel, then spent 17 years in New York working at several of the world’s leading design agencies, before returning to New Zealand in 1966 to set up his own studio in Devonport, where he worked right through into his eighties.

The diverse range of products he designed – including the Felton Mix shower head, Bic stackable in-trays, numerous Fisher & Paykel appliances, radios, petrol pumps, and many more – have been part of the life of every New Zealander’s life.

In 2013 Gifford’s amazing career was recognised by the Queen with the conferment of an ONZM (Officer of the New Zealand Order

of Merit), by the publication of a book titled Gifford Jackson: New Zealand Industrial Design Pathfinder, and an exhibition of the same name. The design community recognised Gifford’s achievements with many accolades over the years including, in 1988, the John Britten Award – the Designers Institute of New Zealand’s highest accolade.

Gifford was passionate about all things nautical – co-founding what is now the NZ Division of the Royal Institute of Naval Architecture, designing a sailing boat called ‘Marisol’ which has been built around the world, and which he used to explore the Waitemata’s sparkling waters.

He was a keen member of the Devonport U3A (University of the Third Age) – particularly of the art and jazz groups. Even in his final weeks Gifford – who had embraced the computer age with relish – was preparing a PowerPoint presentation on the French artist Tissot to present to the U3A art group.

from Martins Bay and employed by Warkworth Construction. Third Place in the Northern Region was awarded to Philip Close, 26, from Belmont, and employed by Coast and Country Homes.

RMBA Chief Executive David Kelly says the outstanding group of contenders this year reflects a real commitment from the construction industry to apprenticeships.

“This competition gives us a glimpse of the capability and determination amongst New Zealand’s apprentices, and has given them a chance to demonstrate their hard work and passion for construction.”

Winning Apprentices – Ex Pupils Jacob Hesketh (2005-2007) & Philip Close (2003-2007)

Gifford was a proud alumni of Takapuna Grammar – and always enjoyed receiving his Ad Augusta newsletter and keeping up with events at the school.

Obituary for William Ian Ferguson (Ian) Macleod

William Ian Ferguson (Ian) Macleod “A wise and gentle man who will be sadly missed”

In 1962, the death occurred of the Headmaster, Mr Sayers. Mr W. I. F. Macleod became the new Headmaster on 17 July.

As pool fund-raising continued, pupils contributed £1,500, both local borough councils donated £250 each towards the total cost of £11,000, of which £7,800 was on hand by November 1963. Mr McGlashan’s generous gratuitous service for the pool’s design was acknowledged and the Orewa Construction Company’s tender of £9,976.6.6 accepted in 1963.

Tenders for the east wing and hall extensions were called in 1965, at which time the Board also felt the need for library extensions; tenders for this were accepted the following year.

The Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.) was founded in 1946. The primary objective of the P.T.A. was to bring the parents into closer contact with the school and to give them an opportunity to assist in its social and cultural development. While fund raising has never been a prime objective, a succession of enthusiastic committees contributed to three major school building projects, namely the gymnasium, library and swimming pool. As well as new stage curtains, landscaping and shelter-belts were established, Report Evenings were arranged so that parents could discuss the progress of their children with the staff.

In 1967 the question of zoning now dominated the Board’s thinking. Eventually, it acceded to the establishment of a T.G.S. zone encompassing the entire area from The Strand, Takapuna to Devonport and accepted an out-of-zone entitlement of 20 pupils.

Also in 1967, some 190 sq. ft of storage space was added to the gymnasium, the assembly hall was extended at the rear and on 1 June, the Minister of Education, the Hon. A. E. Kinsella, performed the opening ceremony of the east wing extension which had cost £90,000. His astonishment at wall to wall carpet in the staff common room was exceeded only by the teachers’ satisfaction. At last they had a civilised sanctuary for rest and recuperation after the labours at the “chalk face”.

In July 1970, Mr W. I. F. Macleod, who had done so much as Headmaster to strengthen the school’s academic and cultural life, resigned to become liaison officer at Massey University.

Wendy Strain Dear Ex-Pupils,

Thank you to all the Alumni who have contributed to another year of growth and activities.

It’s great to see the many ways in which Ex-Pupils are reconnecting: helping with the TGS 90th Reunion planning, sharing experiences and passing on advice to current students, allowing profiles and photos to be shared in newsletters, presentations at school to encourage new T.G.S. students, passing on photos and memorabilia that tell Takapuna Grammar School’s history, passing on news of alumni, engaging through the Takapuna Grammar School face book page and sharing your memories and experiences. Social networking makes it easier to make contact and to keep connected. I hope that the Alumni association will continue to strengthen and grow with your help, and I look forward to reading stories of Takapuna Grammar School alumni from around the world.

I would like to wish our 2015 Leavers well in their future endeavours and welcome them into our T.G.S. Alumni family. 2016 will mark 89 years of camaraderie, kinship and commitment for Takapuna Grammar School.

Good health to you and your family and best wishes for 2016. T.G.S. Alumni Community Co-ordinator
