The old tradition of CNR in geothermal energy

Specialized in geothermal energy since 1960’ with activity mainlyy focused on geothermal assessment. One Institute fully dedicated to geothermal energy the International Institute for Geothermal Research (CNR-IIRG) Coordination of most, and participation to all geothermal projects Various high-level international activities: training (the annual “International School of Geothermics” in Pisa and Short Courses in every continent linked to UNESCO), scientific dissemination (Elsevier’s “Geothermics” was born in IIRG) and promotion (documents, leaflets, also in collaboration to IGA) Research in collaboration with ENEL

Geothermal activities are shared among different institutes and departments of CNR, having various skills.

The main activity is referred to the Department of Earth System Science and Environmental Technologies (DTA), with its network of 12 national institutes, developing experimental and computational methodologies for studying geological systems and materials, and their properties from nano to mega scales.

DTA delivers independent research, survey, technologies and knowledge transfer in the Earth and environmental sciences to advance knowledge of the planet as a complex and interacting system.
