Activity: Infectious Disease Brochure Project Biology II Name________________________ Period ___ Curriculum Focus: Diseases Background Information If a disease affects a large number of people in a particular location such as a town, region or country, it is referred to as an epidemic. Epidemics are either communicable or non-communicable in nature. Diseases are capable of affecting many people or impact on their lives even if they are not epidemics. Communicable diseases are passed from person to person (organism to organism). Some communicable diseases can be deadly while others are not. Examples of communicable diseases are the flu, Hepatitis A, B, and C, and HIV/AIDS. Procedure:

1. Each pair of students must choose a disease that they will research for the activity. 2. Students will use databases provided to search for information about the disease they chose. 3. Information should be based on the criteria given by the teacher. 4. Create a brochure that includes ALL the given criteria.

Brochure Information: The brochure should include ALL the information below…

1. A world map showing places where there have being epidemics or outbreaks. 2. A picture or photo of an infected person. 3. Identifying characteristics of the disease. 4. How is the disease transmitted or why /how does one get it? ( casual contact, non-casual contact, …) 5. How can you keep from contracting the disease? 6. What populations/races of people are most affected by this disease? 7. What is the percentage of people who die from this disease? 8. What are the treatment options? 9. Is this disease curable? What is the success rate for the cure? 10. Resources used must be cited
