MONTHLY TRENDS

During the month of October, open source research by the TRIPwire team on domestic improvised explosive device (lED) usage shows the following:

There were a total of 189 incidents in which bomb squads responded (includes lED detonations, reports of suspicious packages, hoax IEDs, incendiary devices, bomb-making materials found or stolen, and devices rendered safe). For a breakdown of the types of instances please see Figure 2 on the following page. There were a total of eight emplaced IEDs. Four of these were chemical pressure bombs. There were a total of 43 instances where an lED, explosive material, or ordnance was rendered safe. Sixteen of these were described as ordnance and seven were described as pipe bombs. There were 53 individuals arrested for activities associated with IEDs over the reported period, 15 of whom were juveniles. There were a total ofthree individuals injured by lED activity. California was the most active state, with 29 reported incidents. Virginia was next with 17 reported incidents, followed by Pennsylvania with 12 reported incidents. For a breakdown of incidents by region see Figure 1 on the following page.

On 9 October 2011, a chemical pressure

bomb detonated at a car wash on the

grounds of Tulsa International Airport. Authorities arrested two men who were

observed leaving the scene ofthe

explosion. Both men were employees of

the car wash where the explosion took

place. The car wash is adjacent to an

airport parking garage. The explosion did

not impact airp011 operations. No injuries

or damages were reported.

There were a total of 61 bomb threats. For a complete breakdown of the sectors targeted in these bomb threats please see Figure 3 on the following page.

During the month ofOctober, 67 susp icimts packages were found throughout the country. Region [JJ had the most reported 9usp icious packages that prompted a bomb squad response. with !l total of 19 instances.

On 21 October 2011, two men robbed a grocery store in Hampton

Roads, VA. The men claimed to be

FBI agents. During the robbery, the

men attached what they described as

bombs to two grocery store

employees. The men left the store

with an undisclosed amount of

money. The Newport News Fire

Department Bomb squad analyzed

the devices and determined they

were not explosive. No mTests have

been made.
