whO aRE wE?

GREDS-EMCONET is a research group linked to the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Universitat Pompeu Fabra ( Barcelona, Spain) specialized in the analysis of “Social determinants of health inequalities”. The group, directed by Professor Joan Be-nach, is also part of the Employment Conditions Network (EMCO-NET), that gathers a variety of experts and specialists from different disciplines (e.g., medicine, molecular biology, statistics, epidemiolo-gy, sociology, political sciences, philosophy) and countries (e.g., Ar-gentina, Chile, Canada, Turkey, Japan, Cuba, Nicaragua, Belgium).

The University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is a leading academic insti-tution ranked as the 1st Spanish University (Times Higher Education Ranking, 2011), that has being recognized as a Campus of Interna-tional Excellence (CIE) by the Spanish Ministry of Education. UPF stands out for its high impact on scientific production and its increa-sing and widening internationalization.

whaT iS OuR RESEaRChERS pROfilE?

Members of GREDS-EMCONET publish regularly in prestigious scientific journals, are part of international organizations, and lead or collaborate in significant national and international projects such as the GEHES project (Global Employment Health Equity Survei-llance System, 2009-2012), the longitudinal analysis of the PaD co-hort in Catalonia about the impact of education and occupation on health (2012-2013), or the European project SOPHIE (Evaluating the impact of structural on the health inequalities and their socials deter-minants and fostering change 2011-2015).

The GREDS-EMCONET research team gives advice regularly to a lar-ge variety of Organizations, Governments and Foundations, giving se-minars, courses and presentations in Universities and academic cen-ters worldwide like The Johns Hopkins University (U.S)), University of Alberta (Canada), la Universidad Nacional de Avellaneda (Buenos Aires, Argentina), University of Toronto (Canada), or the Vrije Uni-versiteit Brussels (Belgium) among others.

whaT iS OuR GOal?

The main goal of GREDS-EMCONET is to generate high quality scien-tific information to develop knowledge, analyses and interventions to increase health equity in communities and populations.

wiTh whOM wE COllabORaTE?

GREDS-EMCONET is involved in a close collaboration with Natio-nal and International Scientific Researchers, Public Agencies, Private Companies, Foundations, Unions, and a large variety of Non-Govern-mental and Social Organizations.

whaT DO wE RESEaRCh?

The main research analyses carried out by GREDS-EMCONET include the following topics:

1. Quality of Employment Employment Precariousness, and Informal Employment

Conceptualization of these employment conditions, analysis of its im-pact on health inequalities, and proposal of interventions and reco-mendations to tackle them.

See the example: : WHO Employment Conditions Network

2. Surveillance and Policies to monitor and reduce health inequalities

Development of new measurements and indicators to monitor health inequalities related with employment conditions (e.g., unemployment, employment precariousness, informal employment), according to di-fferent of countries and contexts based on its economic situation, the characteristics of the labor market and the levels of social protection.

See the example: GEHES (Global Employment Health Equity Survei-llance System, 2009-2012),

3. Social determinants vs Genetics inheritance

Genetic alterations that we inherit from parents to children have a relative impact on our health. There are other factors (social determi-nants of the health) that have major impact. It is relevant to know the real weight of each one of them on our health and the complex relation between them.

See the example: “La Genètica vs els determinants socials de la salut; càncer de còlon i càncer de mama”

4. Social and geographical inequalities in health

Study of overall and specific causes of mortality for men and women in small areas in Spain and Catalonia. In this research field, we have published three Atlases, many Reports and a large number of scientific papers.

See the example: Atlas of mortality in municipalities and small areas in Spain (2012) (preliminary link)

whaT DO wE OffER?

Research topics such as Social determinants of health, Health In-equalities, and Employment and Working Conditions developed by GREDS-EMCONET are of high relevance in the context of the current economic and social crisis. The implementation of political and social interventions (e.g., health, health services, administrations), as well as private programs (e.g., workplaces and organizations) will help to improve the Health and Quality of Life of the population, specially of the most vulnerable social groups. The private sector as well as the public administrations, and a large diversity of social groups, require regularly our services and research studies.

GREDS-EMCONET 2013

In addition to the development of scientific research projects and training courses, GREDS-EMCONET also offers to organizations its services on needs assessment and analysis of priorities . These analy-ses are key to understand and reduce social inequalities in health, both in countries or regions, as well as in the context of communi-ties or companies. Another key activity of GREDS-EMCONET is its global experience and capacity to organize courses, seminars, and workshops that can be adapted depending on specific requirements.

1. Research projects

GREDS-EMCONET strongly believes in the multiple cooperation and transversal knowledge achieved through the information and methods provided by many disciplines. For this reason, GREDS-EMCONET participates in research initiatives collaborating with many research groups, both at the National and International levels.

2. Advisory and consultancy

The GREDS-EMCONET members have a wide experience in the field of advisory and consultancy. They have been involved in many Global studies about Health Inequalities in Spain and elsewhere, being the only Spanish group who participated in the very influential Commission of Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) of the World Health Organization (2005-2008). GREDS-EMCONET has developed a large activity of Reports and Projects for Gover-nments Foundations, Private companies, Unions and Non-govern-mental organizations.

The main research lines that GREDS-EMCONET has put into action along the years to develop studies and analyses include:

• Social determinants of health and inequalities

• Employment and working conditions and the labor market

• Social determinants vs Genetics inheritance

• Global Reports on population’s health

• Equity in health as a key indicator of social justice

• Small area mortality atlases • Assessment of needs, surveillance, and policies on health in-equalities

3. Teaching and training

The members of GREDS-EMCONET are involved in a large number of initiatives linked to teaching activities. On one hand, they per-form scholar activities in the university (Masters, PhDs and other degrees), training courses in the fields of Public Health and Occupa-tional Health to unions, non-governmental organizations, and com-panies. On the other hand, they also perform activities in collabora-tion with social movements and NGOs.

Non-competitive Impact of education on employ-ment”

Fundació Jaume Bofill 2012-2013

The project “Impact of education on employment” aims at studying the association between educational credentials held by an individual and his situation with respect to paid work, controlling for possible confounding variables. This is a panel study based on an initial cross-sectional sample representative of the Catalan working age population, followed over the period 2001-2010. Data come from the Panel of Social Inequality in Catalonia (PaD, waves 1 to 8). The project also includes writing an Introductory guide to statistical methods for longitudinal analysis geared towards the dissemination of these techniques.

Competitive SOPHIE -Evaluating the impact of structural policies on health inequa-lities and their social determinants and fostering change

Seventh Framework Programme 2011-2015

SOPHIE aims to generate new evidence on the impact of structural policies on health inequalities, and to develop innovative methodolo-gies for the evaluation of these policies in Europe. Particular attention will be put in increasing the involvement of affected stakeholders (civil society and deprived population groups) in the identification, design and evaluation of policies to tackle health inequalities.

Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Spain) 2014-2016

Strictly speaking, only between 5 and 10% of cancers are due to genetic inherited factors, the rest are caused by the interaction bet-ween genes and social factors. What is the real role of the Social Determinants on the generation of colon and breast cancer? What is the role played by genetic inheritance? Today there is a strong need to define causal models helpful to avoid or reduce those important diseases.

GREDS-EMONET places high importance on the transfer of the knowledge generated within the research group. Therefore we ca-rry out activities aimed at different audiences and groups, trying to adapt speech, means and channels in order to ensure that potential interested audience is highly receptive to our communications. The following activities of knowledge transfer may be highlighted:

GREDS SESSiONS

Every two weeks Greds organises sessions open to the public at the Campus Mar UPF (Dr.Aiguader, 80). Such a session consists in a talk on social determinants of health, health inequlities and/or pu-blic health given by an expert.

CONfERENCES

During the year Greds-Emconet organises a great number of both national and international conferences in collaboration with other partners and research groups. Also Greds-Emconet’s members take part in other forums as invited guests.

MaSS MEDia

Greds-Emconet works closely with mass media: written press, TV, radio, digital media and social networks, whom Greds-Emconet as-sist according to their requests. The research group also promotes the participation in the mass media by proposing articles, taking part in TV and radio programs, etc.

publiCaTiON Of bOOKS

Thanks to a continuous relationship with the world of publishing, the members of Gred-Emconet have been publishing over the years a number of titles using accessible language, which are being distribu-ted both in Europe and Latin America. We are expanding our scope to the anglosaxon publishing world with the proposal to publish in English some of the most interesting works of the group.

publiCaTiON Of REpORTS

From the Greds-Emconet point of view, the production of reports re-sulting from the research or other projects the group is undertaking is a determining factor for the transfer of knowledge. In our case the report becomes relevant as a synthesis and a tool, and it seeks to transcend its traditional role.

auDiOviSual MaTERial, E-lEaRNiNG aND ONliNE pRESENCE

Since October 2011 Greds-Emconet is documenting all courses and public talks of the members of the group by video and makes these videos available through a Youtube Chanel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/gredsemconet/videos) and a trilingual Internet-platform (Catalan, Spanish and Eglish). This platform can be consulted at www.determinantssocials.org, www.determinantessociales.org, www. socialdeterminants.org. This web also intends to host teaching material (audio, video or documents) specifically prepared for this platform, and other contents of interest.
