A change poem relates each stage in the subject’s evolution. A thoughtful statement is made about the changes. The poem follows an ABCB pattern.

The first line names the change from the first stage to the second stage.

The second line names the change from the second to third stage.

Seed into sapling,

sapling into tree,

A thoughtful statement describes the final stage. The final line should rhyme with line 2.

I really see “Home, Sweet Home” right in front of me.

Teaching SuggestionsPrepare students for this writing project by asking them to think of several sets of subjects with three stages: eggs, tadpoles, frogs; baby, child, adult; arguing, fighting, war. The f inal sentence of a change poem is very important to its meaning. Have students try to find a phrase that captures both understanding and an emotion. Use the sample poem as an example. What words show an understanding of what happens in the last stage of the life of a tree? (narrator sees a home built from trees) How was it expressed to evoke emotion? (“Home, Sweet Home” is a phrase often used to express the warmth and love existing in one’s home.)

Seed into sapling, sapling into tree,I really see “Home, Sweet Home”right in front of me. –Megan Fowler

Language Fundamentals is the perfect companion to

Daily Language ReviewThousands of grades 1 through 6 classrooms use Daily Language Review for focused practice and review. Multiple studies show that this type of distributed, or spaced, practice is a powerful strategy for achieving profi ciency and retention of skills.

Student responses on the weekly Daily Language Review units will indicate those skills needing further reinforcement. Language Fundamentals can then be used to provide the reteaching and additional practice. For example:

The student makes errors in week 14 of Daily Language Review. Your assessment is that the student needs more practice with these skills because:• the student does not use a comma

to separate items in a series.• the student identifi es nouns as adjectives.

Use these pages from Language Fundamentals to reteach and practice the skills the student has not mastered.

Group Story

A Circle Story

Circle stories require that each item leads to the next and that the story ends up where it started.

To help students understand how circle stories work, read If You Give a Mouse a Cookieor If You Give a Pig a Pancake both by Laura Joff e Numeroff .

Follow these steps to write a group circle story:1. Draw a large circle on the board. Draw a small

circle in the center. Divide the large circle into sixths.Reproduce the form on page 38 for each student. Have them write along with you as you fi ll inthe circle chart.

2. Choose a character for the story. Write the character’s name in the center of the circle.

3. Select six related items. Write the name of one item in each part of the circle. Each item must lead in some way to the next as you go aroundthe circle. Th e items should represent the partsof the story or steps to follow.

4. Following the items in the circle, write each stepof the story on a large sheet of paper to display.

A boy wanted to make a birdhouse. His dad gave the boy a hammer. Then he needed a nail. His dad gave the boy some wood. Then the boy wanted a saw.He cut the wood and nailed it.Then he needed some paint. The boy wanted to put his birdhouse in a tree.He needed a ladder.A bird moved into the birdhouse.More birds came.“I need to make more birdhouses,” said the boy.He asked his dad for a hammer.

Choose the ConclusionAn explorer is being held by a scary monster! What will happen?

Here are some ways this problem might be solved. Choose the one you think is best.

The explorer tickled the monster until it was laughing so hard that it couldn’t hold on to her any longer.

A tribe of friendly natives heard the explorer calling for help and rescued her.

The explorer’s dog nipped at the monster until the monster became so irritated that it let the explorer go.

It turned out that the monster was trying to help by lifting the explorer out of the path of a herd of stampeding elephants.

Explain why you picked this conclusion.

Now write a different conclusion to the same problem, using your imagination.

Illustrate your conclusion.
