Activists are calling on Resorts World Sentosa (http://www.rwsentosa.com/) to

release the 23 remaining dolphins (https://www.thedodo.com/fourth-wild-

caught-dolphin-die-548653991.html) in response to a dolphin death at at the

resort located on an island off the coast of Singapore. The push comes in the

wake of three other dolphin deaths since 2008.

Now, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

(http://www.spca.org.sg/) (SPCA Singapore) is getting in on the call. A statement

from the organization reads

In a country like Singapore, with the Wild Animals and Birds Act in

place prohibiting any person from killing, taking or keeping any wild

animal, it is extremely disappointing that we are accepting these

wild-caught dolphins for the purpose of forcing them to adapt to an

unnatural lifestyle in RWS' Marine Life Park attraction.

When the dolphin, named Sharmila, died, the company released this statement:

We are extremely saddened by the passing of our dolphin, Sharmila.

Sharmila left us on 11 May 2014. We are conducting tests to confirm

the exact cause of death. Prior medical tests indicated that she was

healthy. We are closely monitoring all our animals, and as always, no

effort or resources will be spared in ensuring the health and well-

being of our dolphins at Dolphin Island. We will provide further

updates on this blogpost when available.

But no other explanation has been provided for the cause of her death. The

park’s disturbing track record with dolphins dates back to 2008 and 2009, when 27

wild dolphins were caught in the Solomon Islands to populate the park. Three

that were captured by the park

SeaWorld and marine parks profit off keeping orcas and other marine

animals in captivity -- despite evidence that captivity not only induces

unnatural behaviors in whales, but also endangers trainers. Join us in

their orca tanks.
