“India is the mother of history, the grand-mother of legend and the great grandmother of tradition” There are few destinations as beguiling as India. For lovers of history, it has an impressive pedigree dating back to around 7000BC. The Moghul Empire was a highpoint and, apart from the Taj Mahal, there are numerous forts and a plethora of wonderful palaces dating from this period. For those more interested in contemporary attractions, India offers an intoxicating blend of colour, smell and sound, with fabulous festivals, atmospheric bazaars and spectacular scenery. In a word, it is the most exotic nation on earth. To the east lies Bhutan, a country still steeped in ancient traditions; to the west lies Burma – one of our favourite destinations – whose people exude a wonderful sense of grace and serenity.

Our tours are designed to show you the highlights of this extraordinary region and there’s a great choice of itineraries. We have taken particular care with the accommodation we offer, which we believe is such an important part of the India experience; and we’ve included a few ‘out of the way’ places we’ve discovered over the years.

About Active TravelActive Travel is Australia’s most innovative tour operator. Established in 1982, we operate a fascinating and diverse range of holidays all over the world. We were the first Australian company to run cycling tours in China and since then we have developed a wide range of unusual and rewarding holidays to the world’s most exciting destinations. Included in our eclectic range of tours are river journeys in South East Asia, walking holidays in Europe, textile tours to Indochina, trekking adventures in the Himalaya and expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Arctic. In addition, we have a substantial programme in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey and

offer numerous tours in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. We specialize in colonial-style riverboat journeys along the Mekong, Irawaddy, Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers - and we also offer a range of one-off group tours, focusing on the unique attributes of our many destinations.

Active Travel is a long-time partner of the Australian National University (ANU), in Canberra and each year we operate a stimulating programme of tours in conjunction with its Centre for Continuing Education – from literary trips to England to painting holidays in the Greek Islands.

Our Tours - How do they work?Nearly all the tours in this brochure are designed for independent travellers. They are not group tours and we can if asked, operate any of them just for one person. We have presented a selection of our most popular itineraries but we can easily amend any of them to suit your flight schedules – in fact we tend to do this more often than not. Just tell us what you want to do, and for how long, and we’ll plan the itinerary for you – at the best possible prices.

If you prefer to join a group, we also offer some specialist Escorted Tours, which you’ll find on pages 26 and 27.

Who travels with Active Travel? The majority of our clients are those who enjoy a well thought out itinerary offering all the essentials but without being over-organised. People who like wandering through the markets and exploring the back streets as well as visiting wonderful old palaces and some of the more unusual sights. We attract people from all walks of life including families and seasoned travellers. They all share a common interest in travelling ‘outside the square’. Typically they look beyond the ‘glossy brochure’ because they want something more when they travel. We are proud to say that guests from our original tour to China in 1982 are still our customers – over 27 years of client loyalty.

Travelling - ‘the Active Travel way’Our job is not only to show you the sights but also to help you make your own discoveries. We offer vehicle-based tours as well as a selection of railway journeys so you can choose the style of travel that suits you best. Our itineraries allow you time to explore on your own and we deliberately don’t include all meals, so that you can experience the fabulous local cuisine. Past guests have praised the Active Travel style and we trust you will also.

Character Accommodation India is a destination where accommodation is a key part of the experience and throughout the brochure we offer a wonderful selection of heritage hotels, including erstwhile palaces and historic merchant homes (havelis). Superior tours mostly feature 5-star hotels (with occasional 4-star properties), and Standard tours offer a mix of lovely 4-star and occasional 3-star superior properties. Wherever possible we avoid using modern or chain hotels and have spent much time seeking out places that ooze with charm, reflecting the character of the region through which you are travelling.

Responsible TravelLike many of our travellers, we are well aware of the positive and negative impacts of tourism. When selecting ground operators we consider not only their professionalism but also their treatment of employees and their attitude toward environmental issues.

We prefer to work with small companies and family-owned businesses where the revenue earned from our tours stays in the country of origin. This is a particular issue in Burma, where we have worked for a number of years with private tour companies.

Through our ‘Savanh Foundation’ we support a number of projects around the world including the total refurbishment and operation of a school in Sri Lanka that was destroyed by the tsunami in December 2004. We have also financed the restoration of a French colonial era house in Luang Prabang, once owned by the Lao royal family. In 2008 we raised over $35,000 for cyclone relief for several charity groups in Burma following Tropical Cyclone Nargis.

Australian-owned and proud of itCorporate takeovers are now common in the travel industry and we frequently hear of new mergers and acquisitions. We are happy to say Active Travel is a true-blue, privately-owned Australian company where YOU are the focus. As Gandhi said, “our customers are the reason for our existence.” And it sums up the Active Travel approach perfectly!

Onward to NepalTogether with our partners in Nepal, we offer a broad range of treks (both camping and lodge-based) throughout the Everest and Annapurna regions. Unlike many of our competitors, our trekking programme is fully inclusive (meals as well) and we believe we offer the best value for money in Australia. Our treks all operate for a minimum of two people and our maximum group size is 15. We provide a free trek pack (sleeping bag, thermal liner, down jacket, rain poncho, air pillow, windproof jacket) as well as a T-shirt and duffel bag, which you get to keep. In fact it’s probably fair to say we offer more inclusions than any other Nepal trekking company.

Classic Railway Journeys

Rajasthan by Rail12 dAys ex delHi STARTS: dAIly

If you want to get under India’s skin, rail travel is a must. Some 30 million Indians are on trains at any one time and it’s a great way to observe – and meet – the locals! After a day of sightseeing in Delhi, take the sleeper train to Jaisalmer where the contrast with Delhi could not be more acute. Enjoy an afternoon tour of this imposing fortified city and, on a morning jeep safari into the surrounding area, see the Royal Cemetery, Rama Temple and traditional villages. A three-hour express train transports you to Jodhpur, where Meherengarh Fort is a particular highlight, and then travel by car to Udaipur via the splendid Jain temples at Ranakpur. Udaipur is one of the gems of Rajasthan, with splendid domed palaces reflected in tranquil lakes. Spend a full day exploring this charming city and take a sunset boatride on Lake Pichola. Another train takes you to Jaipur to visit the dramatic palace at Amber, the extensive City Palace and the ancient observatory at Jantar Mantar – and there’s plenty of time to browse the bazaars. Back on the road, stop at Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar’s deserted capital, and in Agra make an afternoon visit to the immortal Taj Mahal. The following day tour Agra Fort, with its many kiosks

and pavilions, with the afternoon free to explore further. A final train ride takes you back to Delhi where the last day is free for shopping until your departure transfer. itinerary

The buddha Train8 dAys ex delHi STARTS: SATuRdAy

If not always the birthplace, India has undoubtedly been fertile ground for many of the world’s great religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and Zoroastrianism. The Buddha lived and died in India and his personality and teachings have illuminated the lives and thoughts of millions of people throughout Asia. This unusual journey, travelling mostly by rail, takes in the most important sites associated with his life. Visit Lumbini, the town of his birth, in what is now Nepal but was then a part of India. Explore the Mahabodhi Temple, in Bodhgaya, where he achieved enlightenment as he sat meditating under a Bodhi tree. At Sarnath see where he preached his first sermon and visit Sravisti, Rajgir and Nalanda – cities where he spent time mingling with the local people, bringing solace and hope wherever he went. He died in 483BC, in his 80th year, at Kushinagar, not that far from the place of his birth. Just before his death he said “all component things must dissolve. A Buddha can only point the way. Become a lamp unto yourself. Work out your own salvation diligently” These were his last words.

The Ganges River For more than 350 million people, the sacred Ganges is their lifeline. It feeds, cleans and transports them, as well as lying at the heart of their religious beliefs. This mighty 2,510 km river rises in the western Himalaya and drains into the Sunderbans delta in the Bay of Bengal. It has over a hundred names, but Hindus refer to it as the Goddess Ganga. The journey from Calcutta to Patna is over 1,000 kms long, and over this course there are historical sights and different village cultures as you cruise from West Bengal, into Bihar and then on to Uttar Pradesh. Each day brings new highlights as you stop to visit smaller towns and villages, seeing relics of the British Raj and witnessing the gentle river in its majestic diversity. You also see the ancient city of Patna, where the Kosi and Ganges meet, and visit Bodhgaya, where Buddha attained enlightenment.

The Hooghly River

Once known as the ‘Colonial River’, the Hooghly (a branch of the Ganges) was an important transportation channel in the early history of Bengal, providing access to the rich jute trade for various European powers that established a string of colonies on its shores. The river banks hosted several battles and skirmishes towards the start of the colonial era and in 1757, on behalf of the British East India Company, Clive of India defeated the Moghul Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey. This was a decisive moment in the history of the region and Calcutta rose up to become the jewel in the British India crown. Today, much of this heritage can be seen and experienced on this exciting seven-day voyage as you pass abandoned jute factories and warehouses and visit a string of colonial enclaves including the old Dutch/French colony at Chandernagar, later eclipsed by Calcutta in the colonial wars of the 18th century. Visit ancient temples, wander down the corridors of Maharajah’s palaces and explore artisan villages along the way.

Hoogly explorer with Rv Sukapha8 dAys ex CAlCUTTA

From Calcutta travel by train to Jangipur to board your riverboat. At Gaur see the ruins of one of India’s great cities, with its many crumbling palaces and mosques. At Baranagar walk through jute fields to visit three lovely miniature terracotta temples. Near Murshidabad visit the rambling Georgian-style Hazarduari Palace with its extensive collection of objects d’art. Khushbagh is the home of the tomb of the Nawab of Bengal, and at the battlefield of Plassey view the obelisk commemorating his defeat. Other places of interest are the brass-working villages of Matiari, and Mayapur with its massive Vedic temple. At Kalna rickshaws take you to some of Bengal’s most attractive terracotta temples and at Bandel, Chandernagore and Serampore there are remnants of Portuguese, Danish and French colonial life including the house of Joseph Dupleix, Governor General of the French establishment during the 18th century. Your trip ends with a transfer to your Calcutta hotel, or the airport.

Riverboat Cruises

The brahmaputra The Brahmaputra is a massive river originating in the Himalaya, flowing east through China before looping through Assam and down into Bangladesh. After tumbling out of the mountains the river slows and spreads over the immense Brahmaputra Valley that bisects the rich green plains of Assam. Turning south, it converges with the Ganges and spills into the Bay of Bengal, creating one of the largest mangrove forests in the world. Within Assam, World Heritage National Parks are accessible as day excursions from our boat, as are villages, weaving communities, temples and river towns. Here, the Brahmaputra is a giant of a river, serene yet complex. For us it provides excellent interaction with local villagers, who excel at weaving and crafts and whose way of life seems unaltered from their ancestors. Superb wildlife reserves display prolific birdlife as well as large mammals - rhino, elephants, deer and perhaps tiger. Then there are the small towns, bustling markets, ancient temples and centuries of history. The river passes through a land populated by many language groups with strong cultural integrity and wonderful scenery – from broad sand islands to the snow capped peaks of the Himalaya.

Which cruise to take? The Brahmaputra is a river steeped in mythology and our magical voyages offer the chance to experience it in all its guises.

• 11d or 15d Complete Brahmaputra is the ultimate 450km voyage through the heart of Assam, from Guwahati to Dibrugarh or vv.

• 8d lower Brahmaputra from Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park, or 8d upper Brahmaputra from Kaziranga to Dibrugarh both offer a wonderful taste of the region.

• 8d Wild Nature of Assam focuses more on the wildlife and birdlife, including a three-night Brahmaputra cruise.

Our experience indicates one cruise is as good as the other. There are variations of course, such as scenery, character of towns and villages, but none have a disadvantage, leaving the date and your time constraints as the ultimate decider.

Boarding your riverboat, cruise upstream to Kurua and the idyllic village of Ganesh Pahar framed by jungle-clad hills. At Orang National Park search for rhino, deer and other wildlife on elephants before cruising to the small trading settlement at Singri Ghat. At Tezpur see the enchanting 6th century Da Parbatia temple and explore the town by cycle rickshaw. At Kaziranga National Park look for wildlife by jeep and on elephants, with the chance to see sambar, swamp deer, wild pig and – perhaps – the elusive Bengal tiger. Himalayan Kingdoms8 dAys ex CAlCUTTA STARTS: dAIly

Sikkim is among India’s smallest states and it is also the highest, bordering the mighty Himalayan chain, with Kanchenjunga (8500m) towering in the west. Its capital, Gangtok, is within easy reach of Darjeeling, and offers a glimpse into the spiritual life of this tiny kingdom. Spend a day in Calcutta seeing the key sites, including fine colonial buildings and vibrant markets. Fly to Bagdogra and drive to Gangtok for a couple of days of exploration. Visit the splendid old Enchey Monastery and see the fine collection of Tibetan artifacts at the Institute of Tibetology. Drive out to beautiful Rumtek Monastery and spend a morning exploring Tsongmo Lake and the surrounding countryside. Drive east to the green hills of Darjeeling, once the former summer retreat of Calcutta’s ruling hierarchy, to see the major sights and – of course – visit a tea plantation. Your trip ends in Calcutta.

Burma

Golden irrawaddy with Pandaw 194713 dAys ex yANGON

This is a classic Burma journey, following the route of the original steamers of 1865 and the inspiration for Kipling’s poem, “The Road to Mandalay”. On this journey explore middle Burma and its famously rich collection of historic relics from the early city state of Bagan, in the 12th century, through to British enclaves abandoned after WWII – and then independence. You begin in Yangon with visits to Shwedagon Pagoda and the historic downtown. Next day, fly to Mandalay to board your riverboat and spend ten days on a leisurely river cruise sailing south to Yangon. See the unfinished pagoda at Mingun and explore the old royal capitals at Sagaing, Ava and Amarapura. Visit the picturesque pottery village at Yandabo and arrive at Bagan, with over 2000 temples to experience. At Youqson Kyaung see the old wooden monastery and near Minbu explore the extraordinary Dragon Lake. The two forts at Minhla – built by Italians to keep the British at bay – are final attractions before arriving back in Yangon, where your trip ends.

The irrawaddy River For centuries, the Irrawaddy River has been Burma’s principal highway, shaping the country’s history, settlement patterns and economic development. By the ninth century a powerful kingdom had been established at Bagan, which eventually established control over both the Irrawaddy and Sitaung river valleys.

By the time the British arrived, the river was in constant use as a major conduit for both people and produce and in 1865 the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company was founded. It grew to become the greatest river fleet in the world, and by the 1920’s there were over 600 boats carrying around 9 million people a year.

It was during this period that Rudyard Kipling visited Burma and the theme embodied in his celebrated poem, “The Road to Mandalay”, is still very much evident today as you sail this busy waterway north to Mandalay, the country’s second largest city. Literary connections continue with George Orwell’s “Burmese Days” penned after his two years on the banks of the upper Irrawaddy, at Katha, not far from the China border.

Highlights of Rajasthan18 dAysStarts (Delhi): Mon 24 Sep, 2011 Rajasthan is one of the world’s most colourful and exotic destinations – a land of royal princedoms with stately palaces and remote fortress-cities peopled by imposing Maharajahs and locals clad in shimmering silks and brocades. Staying mainly in character/palace hotels, we spend a day in Delhi, seeing all the highlights with a free day for further exploration. An overnight train brings us to the fairytale palace-fort at Jaisalmer, and visit wonderful havelis (mansions) and see the fort itself. Driving east, we stop at Fort Pokhran and spend a night under the stars at Osian Desert Camp where we ride camels into nearby dunes. We reach the fabled Jodhpur where Meherengarh Fort dominates the skyline and continue to remote Deograh to experience village culture. Udaipur is always a favourite, with gorgeous palaces reflected in the waters of several lakes. Here we visit the celebrated City Palace and other key sights before driving to the hamlet of Bijaipur and the imposing fort at Chittaurgarh, a testament to the courage of the Rajputs. A free day here allows time to see something of local life, on bicycles, horseback – or on foot. The glorious Bengal Tiger is an enduring image of India and our next stop is the wildlife sanctuary at Ranthambore, where we enjoy early morning and late afternoon game drives. Not far away is the ‘pink city’ of Jaipur, a riot of colour and noise. We visit Amber Fort, the City Palace and have time to browse the many bazaars. Leaving the best till last, we drive via Fatehpur Sikri to Agra, where sunset and sunrise visits to the Taj Mahal show this monument to love in all her glory. Our tour ends in Delhi.
