IntroductionThis intelligence service is split between Active (accident avoidance) and Passive (accident limitation) safety technologies. Active safety features helpdrivers to avoid accidents, e.g. anti-lock braking systems. Passive safety features are features that help occupants of a vehicle to stay alive and unharmedin the event of an accident, e.g. airbags.

Thanks to passive safety systems such as seatbelt pretensioners and airbags, vehicle safety has substantially improved over recent decades. The next stepto further reduce road traffic accidents can be active safety and driver assistance systems based on various sensors.

Back in the 1970s, active safety systems in vehicles equated to bright headlights and warning horns. Nowadays, active safety system technologies includeradar-, ultrasound-, and video-based functions such as the predictive emergency braking system, the side view assist, lane departure warning systems, andthe night vision system.

Active safetyIt’s a grim thought but, on average, someone dies every minute somewhere in the world as a result of a traffic accident.

A number of manufacturers are pursuing the aim of reducing the frequency and severity of accidents by developing active and passive driving assistancesystems. According to Bosch, driver assistance systems aim to make the vehicle capable of perceiving its surroundings, interpret them, identify criticalsituations, and assist the driver in performing driving manoeuvres. The object is, at best, to prevent accidents completely and, at worst, to minimize theconsequences of an accident for those concerned.

Driver assistance systems use a combination of warnings and some degree of active intervention to help steer the driver away from trouble. Although theaccent is on giving assistance to the driver rather than take control away, motorists are still wary about cars that supposedly drive themselves.

PESTER analysisPolitical• As fuel prices escalate, more motorists are switching to more fuel efficient smaller cars.

Yet these are perceived by some to be not as safe as larger vehicles. Hence, OEMs are facing pressure to include advanced driver assistance featureson mid-range vehicles, too.

• All these driver assistance technologies are at various stages of development but their adoption will depend on acceptance by both consumers andgovernments.

Some believe that there is a danger that some drivers will actually drive faster or pay less attention to the possibility of a hazard ahead if they havefaith that a gadget will alert them if needed. There have been always discussions about technologies that offer more safety. Growing concern over'distracted drivers' in the US has prompted Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to reveal the first-ever federally proposed guidelines to encourageautomakers to limit the distraction risk for in-vehicle electronic devices. The proposed voluntary guidelines would apply to communications, entertainment, information gathering and navigation devices or functions that are not required to safely operate the vehicle. Issued by thedepartment's NHTSA in February 2012, the guidelines would establish specific recommended criteria for electronic devices installed in vehicles at thetime they are manufactured that require visual or manual operation by drivers.

Economic• Although adaptive cruise control (ACC) is mainly on large and luxury vehicle models, the technology is not exclusive to these segments.

For example, ACC is being offered on the Ford Focus as well as the upper trim level of the Ford Taurus, Toyota Avalon and Hyundai Genesis.

CompaniesActive and passive safetyAutoliv Inc.

Autoliv has unveiled a new operating structure, which it says will create two business segments, namely passive safety and electronics. The passivesafety product organisation, effective from X September 2014, is responsible for all regional operations with respect to all passive safety products, including airbag and seatbelt products. The electronics product organisation, also effective from X September 2014, includes Autoliv's active safetyproducts. Beginning X January 2015, passive safety electronics will be transitioned from passive safety to the new electronics product organisation.

Active safety

In 2008, Autoliv acquired the automotive radar sensors business of Tyco Electronics Ltd for US$XXm. This business designs and manufactures activeradar proximity and attribute sensor system used in vehicle driver assist and safety applications. The technology and intellectual property included inthe transaction includes short-, medium- and long-range radar products. Automotive safety system applications for this technology include blind spotand collision warning, lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation by braking and side pre-crash sensing, along with back-up andpark assist functions. Autoliv has since used the technology to trigger other vehicle safety features such as active bumpers, structures, knee bolstersand active seatbelts.

In April 2011, Autoliv acquired technologies for automotive forward-looking vision systems from Hella Aglaia Mobile Vision GmbH, a subsidiary of HellaKGaA Hueck & Co. Both companies say they will cooperate to further develop these technologies, too. Autoliv has acquired an exclusive license to HellaAglaia's monovision based algorithms for traffic sign recognition (TSR), lane detection and light source recognition.

MarketsActive safetyMarket trends

Driver assistance systems include lane departure and blind spot warnings, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, active headlights, telematicscontrol systems and parking assistance.

About six out of ten consumers (XX percent) are interested in getting one of these technologies when they next purchase a vehicle, according to anAuto Alliance opinion poll of X,XXX consumers.

There are three types of driver assists. Warning and alert systems show a visual warning or sound an alarm or vibrate the steering wheel (or evenseats) to alert the driver to take action, while active controls actually manage vehicle systems for fractions of seconds in emergencies, like electronicstability control that activates faster than a driver could act. Almost half of consumers (XX percent) favour the driving alerts while about a third (XXpercent) favour active systems that steer, slow down or brake the car automatically in emergencies. Driver assist systems may also be controls andvision aides, like integrated in-vehicle telematics systems, cameras or night vision, to help you drive better in all kinds of situations.

While these technologies and other driver assist options will culminate at some point in the future in autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles, consumerstoday are more comfortable with driving alerts or systems that control the vehicle for seconds at a time.

Additional polling results indicate consumers are concerned about driving challenges that can be addressed by driver assists:

◦ XX percent say that erratic drivers on the road are their biggest driving concerns.◦ XX percent of respondents said there was a time in the last month when another driver cut in from of them, forcing them to stomp on their brakes.◦ When asked what driving situation is most challenging, answers included cars cutting in front of you (XX percent), stop-and-go traffic (XX percent),

crowded highways (XX percent) and pedestrians, motorcycles and bikes (XX percent).

Active SafetyDriver assistance systemsThe European Commission (EC) defines driver assistance systems as those which help drivers to avoid or mitigate an accident through sensing thenature and significance of the danger. The EC says that, depending on the significance and timing of the threat, these on-board systems will:

▪ alert the driver as early as possible to an impending danger;▪ warn him or her if there is no driver reaction to the first alert;▪ actively assist or ultimately intervene in order to avert the accident or mitigate its consequences.

According to BMW, driver assistance systems “are vehicle functions which help the driver to take in information and make the right decisions, andrelieve him of awkward driving tasks. In the future, the targeted provision of information will make it even easier for the driver to make the rightdecisions quickly. The result is assured responses at the wheel, even in computer road simulations.”

Driver assistance systems – either on the road or still on the drawing board – divide into three distinct categories:

▪ Collision-warning systems– this is the original term for forward and side radar systems which alerts the driver but does not control theengine speed.

Bosch's traffic assistantBosch says it will launch a traffic assistant that keeps the vehicle in its lane in congested traffic in 2014. In future, says Bosch, the system willbecome a traffic jam pilot with an automated lane change function. This will enable drivers to check their email in traffic jams, for instance.

Autoliv's airbag inflatorAutoliv has developed a new concept for inflating airbags. The new inflator went into production early in 2012, in a passenger-side airbag for aEuropean manufacturer of premium-brand vehicles. The new inflator uses hydrogen and oxygen with inert gas to inflate the airbag, instead ofpyrotechnic substances. The inflator, dubbed APG (for Autoliv Passenger-inflator Gas) will primarily be used in frontal airbags for the front-passenger side where higher gas quantities are required than for other airbags in a vehicle. Autoliv says the next step of this technology is todevelop a dual-stage version of the inflator to be able to adjust the gas flow to the severity of the crash and to other parameters. This will bedone using two independent ignitors and varying the time lapse a few milliseconds between the ignitions.

Back-up camera for the aftermarketMagellan GPS is offering a back-up camera companion product for its RoadMate car navigation units for the aftermarket. As the namesuggests, the back-up camera helps drivers reverse and park more safely. It attaches to the vehicle's rear license plate and transmits imagesto the RoadMate’s screen.
