ACTION RESEARCH: DEVELOPING AND ACHIEVING SPN 21 STANDARDS

Teacher Self-Evaluation

Your voluntary participation in this self-evaluation is very much appreciated.

Preamble

The quality of the educational service depends on the quality of our teachers. If

higher standards are to be achieved and all pupils are to be effectively supported

in achieving their best potential, it is essential that teachers are well prepared for

their work and that they have opportunities to extend and revitalise their skills

throughout their careers.

It is widely acknowledged that improvement in educational systems is crucially

dependent on effective teacher self-evaluation, critical reflection, collaboration

with peers and personal and collective action. Indeed, teachers instinctively wish

to reflect on their work, evaluate it and look for ways to improve it. However,

effective self-evaluation is not simply a process for the individual, but involves

colleagues in a variety of ways. A fundamental principle is that teachers should

also see themselves as everyone else, that is, life-long learners.

These teacher self-evaluation standards are adapted from the professional

standards for Queensland teachers for registration purposes

(http://www.qct.edu.au/standards/index.html), and performance appraisal from the

Texas Seventh-Day Adventist School System and Newfoundland Teachers

Association (http://circle.adventist.org/download/TeachEvalForm.pdf). The

standards support the varied nature of a teacher's work and should be an integral

part of teachers’ professional growth and development.

The Standards for SPN 21 comprise seven key components:

To evaluate yourself please circle a number: A 5-point Likert scale was used as

follows.

Except for components I and VII (which are basic teacher competences), teachers

with more experience scored higher in the other five components of professional

teacher standards.

I. Instructional Planning for Quality Teaching (Mean 3.20 – 3.90;  Cronbach’s

alpha = 0.969)

As a Teacher I : Mean

1. Plan effectively for both long and short term (action plan &

scheme of work)

3.70

2. Plan lessons on a daily basis                                                                                3.90

OVERALL (N of Cases = 10) 3.63

I believe I plan well in the following ways:

4

Page 5: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

The lessons planning and assessments is done well because lots of information on

scheme and action plan provided by the Department of Curriculum. The lesson plan

is prepared weekly and the topic is according to the scheme prepared earlier before

school starts. The steps in preparing lesson plan include the topics, objectives,

methods, content, teaching aids and assessments. Classwork and homework are

also pre-prepared according to pupil’s needs and abilities.

My planning needs improvement in the following areas:

Pupils have different abilities in learning because that natural for human being. So, it

is very difficult to recognize and plan for these pupils because teacher taught many

subjects in one class and pupil’s abilities are also vary in different subjects.

How to improve:

1. Set up a committee to handle the different type of student abilities.

2. Discuss with the committee how to teach different type of student abilities.

3. Prepare lesson plan and work that should be given to different type of student

abilities.

II. Teacher Concerns for Student Learning  (Mean 3.67 – 4.10; Cronbach’s

alpha = 0.964)

5

Page 6: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

As a Teacher I : Mean

1. Consistently model the behaviour I expect of students 3.90

2. Clearly state my expectations of learning for all

students

3.90

3. Encourage students in the practice of self-discipline                             4.00

4. Minimize student exclusion as a disciplinary measure                             3.70

5. Avoid deliberate embarrassment of students                                           3.80

6. Control my own emotions in discipline                                           3.70

11. Take a deep interest in the spiritual growth of all students 3.70

12. Encourage students to use and practice their English 3.67

OVERALL (N of Cases = 10) 3.85

I believe I relate well with students in the following ways:

6

Page 7: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

Always appreciate pupils work make the pupils more motivated and raise their

confident.

My relationship with students needs reconsideration in the following areas:

As the pupils are Malay oriented language, the use of English as a second language

is very difficult and need more time to practice especially in communicating with each

other.

How to improve:

1. Ask the students to speak English in class except during Bahasa Melayu, Melayu

Islam Beraja, Lukisan and Pengetahuan Ugama Islam.

2. Give a motivation or reward to encourage the students to talk in English such as

giving star points.

III. Teaching Strategies for Effective Meaningful Learning

(Mean 3.40 – 4.29; Cronbach’s alpha = 0.979)

As a Teacher I : Mean

1. Use a variety of teaching methodologies                                                                       3.80

2. Integrate subject areas where appropriate to demonstrate

relationships

3.40

3. Use teaching resource materials prudently                                                                       3.567

Page 8: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

4. Elicit student responses to develop interpretive, analytical and

evaluative skills

3.70

5. Provide adequate thinking time after posing a question                                           3.90

6. Allow for students of differing ability and background to experience

success

I believe my teaching techniques are satisfactory in the following areas:

Always respond positively to pupils answer or questions to make the pupils more

active and high confidence talking in the front of other pupils.

My teaching techniques need review in the following areas:

Integration of subjects is a good way of teaching two or more subjects at once and

the development of pupils talents can be diversify. However, the factor of time and

poor planning can affect this because as the subjects are integrated the content

becomes more and time taken also increased. For example teaching mathematics

and ICT where teacher have to divide their time in teaching the use of computer first

then teach mathematics. Although the pupils different abilities also can affect this

because teacher have more time spend on the low ability pupils. Sometimes, the

teacher doesn’t realised that they had used integration in their teaching technique.

How to improve:

9

Page 10: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

1. Teacher should make a research before starting the lesson.

2. Discuss with other teacher on how to integrate the subject.

3. If the topic of the subject can be integrate with other subject, then the teacher can

prepare early on what sort of activity that is suitable to be used in order to

integrate the subject. Example making a clock model, this is integration between

mathematics (learning about clock) and lukisan (handicraft).

4. Have sharing session such as in the Staff Development.

IV. Student Assessment for Learning and Development

(Mean 3.40 – 4.10; Cronbach’s alpha = 0.991)

As a Teacher I : Mean

1. My assessment program is:

a) consistent with the school SPN 21 assessment policy 3.60

b) consistent with the stated objectives of the course / syllabus 3.80

c) consistent with the current trends in assessment as developmental 3.75

2. I use standardized achievement and diagnostic tests when

appropriate

3.40

3. I vary my approaches to assessment, including skills and

knowledge

3.80

4. I use assessment results to:

10

Page 11: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

a) analyse effectiveness on my teaching                                                                       3.70

b) plan instruction and review                                                                                     3.70

c) diagnose student strengths and weaknesses                                                         3.80

d) implement strategies to meet each student’s needs as diagnosed 3.50

5. I keep accurate assessment records of all students                                          3.70

6. My reporting to parents is based on the assessment

programme

3.70

7. My reporting programme is consistent with school SPN 21 policy 3.70

8. I frequently check student work as part of my assessment plan 3.80

9. I encourage and reward quality work 4.10

              OVERALL (N of Cases = 10) 3.72

I believe my assessment program is satisfactory in the following areas:

Teacher must always encourage pupils to work harder and reward them to boost

their confidence in learning and also teaches them to compete with each other in

order to get good results.

My assessment program needs review in the following areas:

Test should be standardized but the problems for different ability. The low ability

students will have difficulty in cope with the test given if it is standardised. So, test

11

Page 12: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

should be done by assessing the pupil’s work continuously and according to their

ability.

How to improve:

1. Make use of reliable test items from past year test papers from public

examinations and international tests such as Trends in International Mathematics

and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Programme for International Student

Assessment (PISA).

2. Select test items that are at the appropriate level for different ability students.

3. Teach students accordingly to achieve success at the level needed to be able to

move on to the next challenging level.

4. Students in any one class are usually at several levels of ability and a teacher

should not just teach to all students throughout the duration of the lesson.

5. Students have different learning difficulties which could be addressed by

Newman’s interview protocol.

6. By using this interview technique as a teaching strategy in a whole class, group

or individual approach, teachers will be adopting a Vygotskian student-centred

approach to teaching.

V. Classroom Management and Learning Environment

(Mean 3.60 – 4.00; Cronbach’s alpha = 0.969)

As a Teacher I : Mean

1. Ensure suitable desk size and seating arrangements                                           3.89

2. Have developed effective rules for dealing with behavioral

problems

3.70

3. Ensure that the students receive maximum instructional time by:

a) starting classes on time                                                                                     3.90

b) maintaining close supervision                                                                        3.90

c) avoiding early dismissals                                                                                     3.90

4. Maintain my room as a conducive learning environment 4.00

5. Provide facilities for students with special needs                                           3.60

6. Ensure my attendance register is up to date                             4.00

              OVERALL (N of Cases = 10) 3.86

I believe my classroom management practices are satisfactory in the following

areas:

13

Page 14: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

It is important to make the classroom conducive so that pupils can learn in a nice

and comfortable environment. The attendance must also be updated so that it can

be used as an assessment of the pupil’s hard work in coming to school.

My classroom management and learning environment need review in the

following areas:

Providing facilities for pupils with needs is very difficult because teacher not fully train

on handling these types of pupils.

How to improve:

1. Discuss with the SENA teachers on how to improve facilities for special needs

students.

2. The class with the special needs students should have an assistant teacher so

that the teacher can concentrate on other student’s example in the private school.

3. Talk from the experts that have knowledge in handling students with needs.

VI. The Teacher as a Professional: Professional Growth

(Mean 3.70 – 3.90; Cronbach’s alpha = 0.972)

As a Teacher I : Mean

profession

3.90

5. Am interested in the better management of the whole school

system

3.80

              OVERALL (N of Cases = 10) 3.84

I believe my professional growth is adequate in the following areas:

All schools have sharing sessions or staff development as part of professional

development in the school. Such activities include methods of teaching and use of

technology. This also increases the teacher knowledge in teaching methods and can

also develop their creativity in providing different kind of teaching strategies and

activities for students with different type of ability.

My professional growth needs review in the following areas:

Reading educational materials such as journals, teacher websites, etc.

How to improve:

15

Page 16: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

1. The head of administration and academic should discuss about this problem.

2. They should display any resources such as journal, teacher websites that is

suitable for the teachers to use it as their resources and reference in order to

improve their teaching strategies.

3. They should share any findings that can improve the teaching and learning

quality so that it will meet the SPN 21 standards.

4. Sharing Session such as Staff Development.

Teachers are very caring and responsible towards students and in carrying out their

teaching and other duties.

17

Page 18: Action research d&a (azrenah hj yakub)2

My professional knowledge needs review in the following areas:

Familiar with trends in teaching my subjects.

How to improve:

1. Discuss with other teacher about the teaching trends.
