Understanding and identifying themajor causes of pressure sores will help professionalsprovide the best preventive care possible.

Capillary closure is at the root of ulcer formation.The blockage or damage of capillaries prevents the natural maintenance of healthy skin. Withoutdelivery of oxygen and nutrients and removal ofwaste, cells die and tissue decays — ulcers form.Providing unrestricted blood flow is imperative in theprevention of ulcers.

Pressure and shear are the main causes of capillaryclosure. When pressure or shear is excessive and/orprolonged, the risk of breakdown is highest. Bonyprominences are most susceptible to damage, althoughany area experiencing these conditions is vulnerable.Taking steps to decrease the negative effects of pressureand shear is critical in preventing ulcers.

Heat and humidity are two factors which act ascatalysts in the process of skin breakdown. The abilityto control these factors and to alleviate thedevelopment of “hot spots” at high-pressure sites willalso help minimize patient risk.
