AIMDJC : For someone who wants to start a voice over career but doesn’t

Murray : First of all get training. If you have friends who are already in the

out the copy quickly in terms of delivery, attitude, vocal transitions, etc.

I have agents and casting directors come to my class to speak to my students. I

hear from them at least a year of study and then maybe you’ll be ready to

record a demo. Then shopping it around may take you three to six months or

more before you hear back from anyone. It’s something you have to be patient

with. Keep your day job and watch it develop as you develop your voice and

technique.

AIMDJC : What bout this idea of sustaining oneself financially while building a

voice over career?

Murray : I would say develop other talents that are even outside of acting to fall

back on. Have some type of skill that can sustain you financially when times are

slow. Because, you and I both know, it can get very slow in this industry. If you

are coming from a computer background, for example, maybe have a side

business as a consultant. For me it’s teaching. My teaching business is 4

pronged. I have classes, I do one on one private coaching, I produce demos,

and I have an on-going workshop for students who’ve already taken my class.

AIMDJC : What do you wish you knew then that you know now about a career

in acting?

Murray : One thing that I wish I had figured out sooner is to focus on one thing.

I sing. I wanted to have a sewing business because I also sew. I had all thesethings going. I finally said let me take ONE thing, and that one thing was voice

over, and focus all my energy on that. Now, that is my foundation. That is

solace for me now. From here I can relax a little bit. I still have my singing. But

I’ve got voice over to keep me afloat while I go and pursue singing. So, I say

pick one thing first.

AIMDJC : Thank you Karen. Where can people find you?

Murray : My website is http://www.thevoiceisyoursnyc.com and I can be

reached by phone at 646-763-1243 . I have a new 6-week radio and

television commercial technique class beginning September 15th.

AIMDJC : How did you get started as an actor?

Murray : It was actually by accident. I wanted to be a singer when I was

younger but I was too shy. Years went by. I went to college, pre-med with

dreams of being a veterinarian. The sciences kicked my butt. I chose Sociology

as my new major. I had a very heavy reading course load so I wanted to take

something that had no reading.

I took an actor’s tutorial. At the end of the year performance I surprised myself

and everyone else by how uninhibited I was on stage, because I was actually

very shy. After that I thought: wow, I like this. I went on to audition for and get

the lead in campus wide productions for the next 2 years. After graduation, I

moved to New York to seek fame and fortune like everyone else. It didn’t quite

happen with the Theatre, Film and TV.

AIMDJC : What were the early days of building an acting career in NY like for

you? What was a typical day or week?

Murray : Initially, like everyone else, it was a lot of extra work. I worked at a

regional theatre in Poughkeepsie, local theatre and a few festivals in NYC. I did

a lot of fun low to non paying theatre work.

A day would consist of firstly, looking at Backstage for auditions. I didn’t have an

agent. I was auditioning for anything and everything that came down the pike in

Backstage. I was waiting tables at night and pursuing my dreams during the

day.

I had just gotten to the point where I realized that I didn’t want this as much as

everyone else around me. I didn’t feel that passion. But a regular customer at

my restaurant said to me, and this is ironic, “You have a really great voice.” It’s

funny, everyone who wants to do voiceover says to me: “Everyone tells me I

have a really great voice.” This customer told me that she has a friend who

produces voice over that I should talk to. His name is Paul Rubin. Today, he is

one of the biggest audio book directors. We had a meeting in his kitchen. He

recorded me reading some copy onto a cassette tape recorder. He said he’d

call me if anything came up. I walked out of there thinking, “Yeah, sure,

whatever… (laughs)”.

I didn’t even know what voice over was before I met with him. He called me

about two weeks later and kept calling me for about ten years after that on a

very regular basis. He started recommending me to other people. It was all non-union work: children’s books, English language materials, industrials, local radio

spots. I started to build up a reputation.

Then one day I thought, “I need to be making the big money!” I got some

training, which is key in this area. You have to get proper training. After training,

I did a demo, sent it out and got representation from Cunningham, CESD. I

started out wanting to do stage, film and all that but now I specialize in voice

acting and I love it.

Come back on Friday and read Karen’s advice on what steps an actor should

take to get started in voice over work and how easy is it really? She also shares

with us if she knew then what she knows now.

Pt. 2August 13, 2010 – 3:23 pm

Rosalyn Coleman Wi ll iams is an accomplished

actress in the areas of Film, TV and Theatre. She

and her husband and partner Craig Williams run Red

Wall Productions. They write, direct & produce films.

Rosalyn is also a highly sought after coach and is

also one of the actors behind the popular EverythingActing Podcast

(http://www.everythingactingpodcast.com/ ). To see a

mini biography on Rosalyn check out her internet

movie data base page

Here is Part 2 of our interview with her:

Wil l iams : I think what is most challenging about a career in acting is that this

is one of the only professions where you experience frequent rejection. We don’t

get paid 52 weeks out of the year like the rest of the world. There’s no security.

It’s only once every couple of years that you get to do a project that you love, if

you’re lucky. So, it’s a high price.

AIMDC : I don’t have children or plans for them. So, many women ask about

balancing family with an acting career. How do you balance being actor, wife,

mom, coach, director, writer, producer?

Wil l iams : First of all, I don’t produce. My husband (Craig Williams) does most

of the producing. He also does 99.9% of the writing [for Red Wall Productions].

So, without having chosen a really supportive, creative partner and, I believe, a

man who wants to see me truly happy, I couldn’t do it.

People ask me that “how do I balance question” a lot. I don’t. I have not had a

shower today. That is not balance. It’s 4:20pm and my behind is dirty (laughs).

It’s because since I got up I had to take care of my son. I had a house guest

and then clients started to come. Then I had an Everything Acting Podcastinterview and now you’re here. I meant to get in the shower.

AIMDJC : I read once in a coaching blog that we should release ourselves of

the added stress of finding balance because it is impossible.

Wil l iams : I think that’s true. I think women have been sold a great myth that

we have to and can have it all and at the same time. I think it hurts us. It makes

us try to be Super Women, which is not attractive. It wears you out and makes

you angry, bitter and you loose.

For me sacrificing a partner and a child is not what I wanted to do. I missed out

on so much because I am an actor. I did not want to miss out on a life partner

Page 5: Acting is My Day Job Coach - Actor Career Coaching

and having a child. That meant I had to be willing to give up acting. When you

have a child, you don’t know if your child is going to be the type of kid you can

act around. I made peace with myself and, in my mind, sort of retired.

Everything since then has been grace.

When I was trying to get pregnant this amazing wonderful mentor of mine Israel

Hicks (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/08/theater/08hicks.html) hired me. I

worked until I was 7 months pregnant. That was like a miracle.

AIMDJC : I find that when friends of mine have children, they are initially

worried about how it will affect their careers. However the universe seems to

make space for exactly that kind of “miracle”.

Wil l iams : Yeah, it’s really weird. I’ve still been able to work. I am really happy

for that. I feel like I don’t audition as much. People think of you as old. There is

a director who is famous, on Broadway, older than I am who I’ve worked with

before. He always says to me, “Hi Mama. How’s the baby?” There are people

who just think of you as a mother. You are uncastable to them, in a way,

because you’ve crossed into the holy grail of motherhood. To them, you’re not

available or sexy. I think even agents think of you differently. So, you make the

most of the opportunities that you do have.

AIMDJC : If you knew then, what you know now about a career in acting. What

would you say to people out there who want to be actor’s despite the risky

career venture that it is?

Wil l iams : I think you have to have really good training. You have to be really

good. You have to love the work. Love the journey. It can’t be only good to you

when you have a big job. It has to be good to you all the time. You have to love

auditioning. You have to love preparing for auditions.

You have to have a life. You have to come from a life or you won’t have

anything to bring to any kind of role. You have to be a full, well rounded person.

If anything and I think a lot of young people know this, I wish I knew that you

have to create your own work. When I was young and starting out, people would

suggest to me that I direct. I was insulted by this. I heard it as, “What, you don’t

think I can make it as an actor?” The truth is you have to be able to make your

own work.

If you feel like you are swimming upstream and you are not having a joyful time

of it. If you don’t LOVE and ENJOY EVERY ASPECT of it then you shouldn’t do

it. You shouldn’t do it at all. Life is too short to toil away at something that isn’t

giving you a LOT OF PLEASURE .

AIMDJC : Thank you so much for taking the time out of you crazy day to talk to

me.

Wil l iams : You’re Welcome!

Wil l iam s, Pt . 1August 6, 2010 – 8:07 am

Rosalyn Coleman Wi ll iams is an accomplished

actress in the areas of Film, TV and Theatre. She

and her husband and partner Craig Williams run Red

Wall Productions. They write, direct & produce films.

Rosalyn is also a highly sought after coach and is

also one of the actors behind the popular Everything

Acting Podcast

(http://www.everythingactingpodcast.com/ ). To see amini biography on Rosalyn check out her internet

AIMDJC : People often say, “I wanna be an actor”, when I tell them that I’m an

actor. I usually tell them to run for their lives but they still want to act. So, OK,

it’s crazy, it’s possible, people do it. You are someone who does it whom I really

admire. So I wanted to interview you about it.

Wil l iams : Thanks, Kim.

AIMDJC : Why acting of all the things you could do in the world?

Wil l iams : I’m one of those saps who feels like acting chose me. You get bittenand then it becomes an addiction. If you have any talent for it or get any outside

affirmation for it then you get to a place where you can’t put it down. It’s like a

narcotic. Or you could say it’s like a boyfriend or someone that you really, really

love.

For me originally, when I got bitten I saw a couple of things. I saw a movie

called ‘Fame’. You have to be very careful what your children see around the

ages of 9, 10, and 11 because that’s when we make these decisions. I saw a

musical called ‘Working’ by Studs Terkel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=Oyl1BvHo9LM).

It had a song in it that went “If I coulda been, what I coulda been, I woulda been

something…” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRa9kiMFL2E&feature=related).

I was a very shy kid. I was scared to tell anyone that I wanted to act. There was

nothing special about me. Why would I say I wanted to act? My parents used to

bring me to the theater. I saw that show and in the Broadway musical, Patti

Labelle sings that song. I didn’t want to wake up one day and say “if I coulda

been, what I coulda been, I woulda been something…” I wanted to fulfill my

dream. So, that was it. I couldn’t sing and dance so I had to be an actor.

AIMDJC : What’s Your Favorite Part of Acting? I’ll also ask you the inverse,

what’s the most challenging thing about acting as a career?

Wil l iams : I believe as artists we do a really, really important job of service

where we heal the world. I really believe that. I believe that we hold a mirror up

to nature and that we can affect change. We can help people be more human. I

feel like it’s a very noble thing that we do.

Theater is the place where God is shown. I believe that it’s my calling, my duty,

my destiny.

AIMDJC : It’s my church.

Wil l iams : Right, it’s my church. I didn’t get this gift for no reason, I’m meant to

share it. That’s what I love about it. It feels very noble and important to me. I

love the audience’s reactions and that they appreciate your work. I love words,

text, and story. There’s so much I love. I love working with other actors and the

creation of relationships on stage. I could go on and on about what I love about

acting…

craft?

The internet is the great equalizer. There are many

places online that an actor can submit oneself for

jobs. When self submitting, be certain to submit oneself appropriately. As actors,

we know that we can do a variety of roles. However, what type is your headshotrepresenting you to be?

If an agent takes a “throw spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks”

approach to submissions, that agents packages will soon be ignored. The agent

that haphazardly submits any and every client for breakdowns will be flagged as

a time waster. An actor self submitting must be careful not to be a time waster

as well.

Be clear on what type you are representing yourself as in your headshots.

Submit only for roles that are fitting. Here are places online to self submit in no

particular order:

1) http://www.nycastings.com

2) http:///www.nycasting.com

3) http://www.lacasting.com

4) http://www.nowcasting.com

5) http://www.actorsequity.org/CastingCall/castingcallhome.asp

6) http://www.playbill.com

7) Backstage Magazine & http://casting.backstage.com/

8 ) http://www.thejbreport.blogspot.com – Jordan Brown also links some postings

through facebook.com

9) http://www.craigslist.com – Always do your own due diligence before

submitting for and accepting work that does not come thru a franchised agent.

Anyone can post listings here so this warning is especially important on a site

like this one.

10) Breakdown Services – These are the official listings that agents and casting

directors use for acting jobs. Actors are not supposed to have access to the

breakdowns. However, some actors do get access to them and self submit on

fitting projects.

11) http://www.facebook.com – There are groups on Facebook that send

members casting notices. Some include NYC Black Theatre Network and

Amerifilm Casting and Media LLC.

12) http://www.twitter.com – There are a number of places to follow on twitter

who list casting ops such as Backstage CastingNYC and Backstage

BostonAuditions.

13) Word of Mouth – Let people in your network know that you are looking for

acting work.

14) Pay it Forward – If you hear about a project someone you know may be

right for let them know about it. You get back what you put out into the world. If

you are the type of actor early in your career that is afraid to share information

and horde it to yourself, that energy will boomerang back to you.

Ac to rs?July 12, 2010 – 11:07 am

I did a survey of several working actors.

Some work in Film and Television.

Others work mostly in theatre both Broadway and

off.

Still others worked mainly in commercials and voice

over.

What is interesting is that most actors work mostly in

ONE area. Many desired to work in all/several of them. However, the challenges

are all the same despite the area of acting. Therefore, if you are just getting on

the road of building acting as a career, here are what actors say are their top

challenges. It does not mean these will definitely be a challenge to you.

However, it is good to have an awareness of what could potentially arise soonerrather than later.

The Top 7 Challenges for Working Actors (in no particular order) Are:

1) Figuring out the business of it. Being my own CEO and figuring out the best

way to market and brand my gift so it can be seen and garner an income for

me.

2) Not destroying myself with fear during auditions. Allowing the real me and my

true level of talent shine through.

3) Getting the industry to be more open minded about my range and potential.

Not being pigeon holed. Getting casting directors and agents to see me in a

different light once having success in one area.

4) Getting accustomed to the fact that auditioning is my real job. Being an actor

= Being a professional job seeker.

5) Getting as much information as possible before auditions in a timely manner.

Audition information usually comes in the night before and that can be nerve

wracking.

6) Not knowing when work or money is coming.

7) Balancing art/creativity and commerce.

As a personal bonus I would add: Having to learn how to do other things in

order to work. For example I have written and produced. I know other actors

who have become writers, film makers, web series creators, managers, etc.

Most of the actors I spoke to had 15 or more years in this business. Think about

these challenges now as you build. What area of acting do you most want

success in? Perhaps, build that first. What will you do to become a strong in the

audition room? It is your main job. What questions do you need to ask the

person giving you audition information so that you feel the most prepared?

Considering these things from the start will head you down this challenging road

with much more ease.

Career – 4 T ipsJuly 5, 2010 – 8:21 pm

I’m just stepping out on faith that my acting career

will just fall into place.

I am visualizing nothing but success for my acting

career.

I’m going to get the best things now, that way I’ll be

forced to make it!

It is a good idea to structure life in the beginning to

support life as an actor. Working can be

unpredictable and inconsistent. Other times we get a good stride and book

often. If life is set up to be manageable for us from the beginning, the likelyhood

increases that the goal of building an acting career that sustains is possible.

1)Af fordable Housing. For some people this may entail a small apartment

share with several people with similar mindsets, goals and motivation in

Manhattan. For others it means living below or at one’s means in the bouroughs

(including New jersey – The other Brooklyn). Living beyond one’s mean early on

is sure to lead an actor into having to get a full time job and giving up acting“temporarily” to cover basic living expenses.

2)Be an Odd Jobber . When I was still an NYU student, I got the opportunity

to ask Ruby Dee how she and Ossie Davis kept afloat between acting work.

She said that she and Ossie Davis had always been odd jobbers. Think about

what skills you have and/or can develop that can be marketable and income

generating. Being an actor is to be an entrepreneur. Everyone building a

business has to have a way of funding life while the company is being built.

Some people are lucky enough to have benefactors, sponsors or investors. This

money is a blessing and should be well managed as well. A second or third shift

paralell career is another way to go.

3)Mandate Sel f Care. In Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way , she has

participants take part in something called the artist date. This is time that is for

artist’s to spend time with themselves doing something enjoyable. Something so

simple is so priceless. Imagine looking up and realizing the 5 years or more of

your life has passed and no time outs had happened? Dentist appointments

have been ignored. Nurture your mind, body and spirit. Take care of you.

Remember, you are also your work instrument.

4)Get Organized. It may seem like a daunting, time sucking task to organize.

However, that is time spent wisely. Once there are systems in place for keeping

everything from paper work to living space organized, peace is the outcome.

Knowing the facts induces a sense of calm. If the check book is always

balanced we can be clear if we need to earn more money or can afford to do

that low or no paying job for fun. Money is saved from not having to pay late

fees. The benefits of creating this habit are positive and numerous. Try it!

Act ing Career , 3 T ips t o Fo l low ing UpJune 21, 2010 – 10:04 am

I’ve always wanted to be a professional actor.

I met this casting director/agent/manager but I didn’t

call them.

I’ve had this business card for weeks but I haven’tcalled yet.

It is amazing how few people follow up and follow

through for their acting career. These same people

will then wonder why things aren’t happening for

them acting wise. If one makes a contact, it is a potential person that can get

one a step closer to acting goals.

1) Cal l the Next Day. Call while you are still fresh in the person’s mind.

There are many people working on building an acting career. Those with a

disciplined work ethic get the worm. Waiting to make a follow up call speaks to

the work ethic (or lack there of) of an actor. Calls for audition appointments and

bookings require quick follow up calls from talent to agent/manager.

Agent/manager then has to call back the client to confirm talent. There are many

cogs that have to be put into place to organize a shoot. Keep the cogs in the

machine turning.

2) Keep Comm i tment s . Do what you say you will do. This builds trust.

There are reliable actors and there are unreliable actors. Guess which actors get

called? Life happens so be sure to call as soon as there are any changes. Make

keeping your word a hard and fast habit. This kind of habit is noted and paid

attention to. So are the bad habits. Everyone has a choice. What types of work

habits are made?

3) Ignore Fear of Succ ess/Fai lure. Calling a person in this industry can be

scary at first. Do not sabotage success. The feelings of fear have NOTHING to

do with taking the physical action of picking up the phone, pressing the numbers

and saying the words: Hello, this is ____, may I speak with ____? Just do it.

Every right and wrong decision brings priceless lessons. There are no mistakes.

Every action brings useful information. Channel Yoda: “There is no try. Do or do

not.”

Act ing Career , Six Benf i ts o f Say ing NoJune 12, 2010 – 4:09 pm

If I don’t take every acting job offered to me, I’ll

never work again.

I’m just so happy to be a working as an actor, I’ll doalmost anything.

It would be bad to seem like I don’t want to be a

working actor, right?

This is not true. It actually can lead to feelings of

resentment around devaluing one’s time. Does that

put one in a position to feel powerful? Time is the most valuable currency we all

have. Spend it wisely.

1) Saying no often clears space for one to attract better opportunities.

2) An actor is in control of their career path.

3) Keeps actor’s in line with their planned goals.

4) Saying no creates confidence in holding high value of one’s time.

5) Saying Yes to paying jobs creates a habit of saying yes to paying jobs.

6) If you are living in New York, there are many places where you can feel great

about volunteering your skill.

You will work again in this town, even if you say no sometimes. This work is

chosen because it is fun. Choose work that you really enjoy if you are going to

work for free. Always remain marketing yourself for new, paying work. Every No

that is received and delivered brings actors closer to the ultimate career goals.

Ultimate career goals are those that you define for yourself. This is especiallytrue on the days you do not believe it.
