Things Hidden: Scripture and Spirituality, by Richard Rohr

Rohr is a Franciscan priest who has written widely on spiritual growth. In thislatest book, he makes a case for a newfound appreciation of how scripture

should be more integrated with spirituality. He shows the continuity of patterns between Old and NewTestaments, including themes and continuities across both. A fascinating argument is made for three"code " words: water, blood and bread. Water signifies God's outpouring love to us and Jesus'description of "living water" to the woman at the well. Blood is the transformative theme of theresurrection. And bread indicates the abundance given, like manna for the Israelites. He sees the Bible as a "school for relationships," in which exposure to "otherness" is how we learn tolove. Mostly, he urges both/and, as in both inner growth as well as social justice. And he makes thestrongest case that God is about "divine union" rather than personal perfection. My reason for sharing this is I think reading it makes for a more enlightened laity. It is akin to a visitfrom a friendly neighbor who sits with us in a front-porch kind of conversation. And "things hidden"will come into full view. Finally, this book is a must-read for any of us who are moving towards thefuller spiritual realm of our continuing journey as "growing-ups."

Thoughts from Garyprovided by Gary Rideout

ACT II's 50+ ministry at First UMC, Winter Park is not like your father's"senior adult ministry." The message of ACT II is that being 50+ does notmean it's a time when you must get out the rocking chair and the quiltingframe. We are not suggesting that this is what your fate is when you get to bethat age. The message of ACT II is that there is no one way you have to bewhen you are in your "golden years." Perhaps your golden years include agolden Harley-Davidson.

That is what is wonderful about being in the "golden years" in this day andtime. There is no one cookie-cutter way to life. That is why the ACT IIministry at the church is so important. Its message to share is that it is not atime of getting older but living life fuller through Christ. This age doesnot

mean a time to coast, but a time to rev up your life. And the ways to do so are myriad. Frombungee-jumping to shuffleboard.

This is the challenge of ACT II - providing events and programs that reach the countless interests ofthose that comprise the 50+ generation. We need your input to help us plan events that wouldinterest you. The qustion is "Now that I am in the 50+ generation, what do I really want to do orlearn?" Let us know, and let ACT II help set it up! Read more Blessings, Gary
