1. IntroductionIn May 2011, the ACT Government decided that common branding would apply to the ACT Government.

These guidelines have been developed to help directorates and ACT Government organisations ensure the logo design is consistently applied to achieve a uniform brand.

The ACT Government logo presents a single, recognisable brand for the Government, making it easier for the public, visitors and investors to recognise the ACT Government’s products, services and entities, and distinguish them from other levels of government, such as the Australian Government, and from the private sector.

It reminds us, as public sector employees, who we are working for – the ACT Government and ultimately the people of the ACT, rather than a division, unit or directorate.

Enquiries about the application of branding should be directed to the Chief Minister and Cabinet Communications and Engagement Unit, email [email protected] or phone 6207 6457.

2. Design elements

FormatThe ACT Government logo includes the ACT Coat of Arms surrounded by a circle with the words ‘ACT Government’ beside or below the circle. A wordmark has also been developed to accommodate situations where the logo’s recommended minimum size cannot be achieved.

FontThe Logo

The ACT Government logo will be supplied as a graphic. All versions and applications of the logo shown will be created and supplied with TEXT elements converted to outlines. The end user will not require any additional fonts to use the logos supplied or to implement the brand. Logos may not be modified in any way to ensure brand consistency.

Supporting Fonts

The wordmark used in the logo should be unique, consistent and identifiable. For these reasons the typeface chosen for the wordmark and directorate identifiers is not a common font. The logo and all directorate versions will be supplied along with this guide. The logos supplied should not be modified in any way and no directorate should attempt to generate their own version of the logo.

A suite of working templates will also accompany this guide. The suite of working templates will utilise the, Microsoft® Office compatible, Calibri font to ensure consistency across the government in print and online.

3. How to apply the ACT Government logo?

PositionThe ACT Government logo should always have prominence over and above other images and graphic elements.

An isolation zone has been established to ensure that the integrity of the design is not jeopardised through crowding. The dimension ‘x’ is equal to the height of the ‘ACT’ and is an applicable proportion at any scale. This dimension ‘x’ is used to determine the isolation zone area.

SizeThe minimum recommended size that the logo should be applied can be determined by the outside diameter of the circular element of the logo. The dimension should be no smaller than 15mm diameter. This recommendation is a guide to avoid reproduction issues and to ensure that the details of the crest and the wordmark ‘ACT Government’ remain clear in print and on screen (see diagram below).

In exceptional circumstances only the absolute minimum size that the logo is to be used is 10mm diameter. The logo should only be used at this size in instances where it is printed in 100% black (cyan 0, magenta 0, yellow 0, black 100) on white coated stock or in 100% PMS 293 on a white coated stock. The logo should never be used at this size when reversed or in press advertising where uncoated stocks, dot gain and registration can produce unpredictable results.

The above recommendations apply to every design form, variation, and all applications of the ACT Government logo.

In situations where the minimum recommended logo size cannot be achieved the Small Wordmark version of the logo should be used. This wordmark is available as a graphic and should be used no smaller than 18mm wide, or 100% of the supplied wordmark size, as shown below.

Watermark

The logo should only be used in watermark format if the entire crest and associated wording are visible and the design is not rotated. None of the design should be cropped from the composition.

A tint of 15% is the recommended minimum tint for the watermark.

Incorrect use of the logo

DO NOT warp, twist or modify the relative height and width proportions of the logo

DO NOT modify the size of any of the logo elements

DO NOT apply the logo any smaller than the recommend minimum size

DO NOT rotate the logo. It must always appear level or horizontal to the layout

DO NOT apply the logo in low contrast situations unless as watermark effect – see watermarks

DO NOT apply the logo over complex backgrounds or images that diminish the presence of the logo

4. Variations of the ACT Government logo

Directorate LogosThe ACT Government logo replaces all previous logos, unless granted an exemption in writing.

The directorate versions of the logo include the ACT Government logo and the directorate title. The directorate logos are available in a ‘stacked’ or ‘inline’ configurations to compliment left biased or centre biased layouts.

Example of Treasury Directorate logo

Example of co-brandingWhen co-branding is required only the inline non-directorate logo version can be used.

The co-branded configuration can be used in black or colour as shown below and the size of the accompanying brand should be no larger than the ACT Government logo. The ACT Government logo should always maintain equal or greater prominence than the co-branded logo.

Proper positioning of the co-branded elements is shown below.

The area of the ACT Gov. logo ≥ the area of the co-brand logo

Examples of co-branding with the wordmark version of the logoIn some circumstances using the preferred dual logo co-branding configuration does not work. These circumstances include situations where there is insufficient space to accommodate the preferred co-branding configuration at the minimum recommended sizes.

In those cases, using the wordmark version of the ACT Government logo in association with an authorized logo is permissible. In those cases, only the main co-brand logo and the ACT Government wordmark are to appear together. No other taglines are to be used when the wordmark version of the logo is applied.

Sponsored by / Supported by / Initiative ofVariations of the ACT Government and directorate logos are available to highlight the Government’s involvement through in-kind support, financial assistance or sponsorship.

The approved variations to the logos are ‘Sponsored by’, ‘Supported by’ and ‘Initiative of’.

These variations have been produced in a range of formats for the ACT Government and each directorate logo.

If more than one directorate provides support to an organisation or program, the ACT Government variation, rather than multiple directorate logos, should be used.

The variations of the logo are shown below with the ACT Government logo used as an example.

Sponsored byApplied in situations where the ACT Government enters into a sponsorship agreement for a particular event/program or initiative.

Supported byAppropriate when the ACT Government offers in-kind support, seed funding or other assistance towards an event, program or initiative without entering into a sponsorship arrangement.

Initiative ofApplied in specific situations where a program, event or initiative is conceived, initiated or driven by the ACT Government but where the management, administration or control of the event, program or initiative is not necessarily the overall responsibility of the ACT Government.

Please contact the Communications and Engagement unit of the Chief Minister and Cabinet Directorate if you are unsure of the appropriate logo to apply.
